    Built in the days when Britain still had belief in itself and achieved more than it believed it could.

    A engineering marvel that can only make these queens of the ocean look greater. Music plays it's part of course;)

    How did I miss this video when it was first posted??? What a great production and an unusual topic. I enjoyed seeing photos AND newsreel footage. The picture of Berengaria at 2:16 is not only special because of its overall quality but because the liner is the tallest thing in the entire scene; a remarkable view. Then there's the color photo of the Mauretania in drydock. I've seen the picture before and it was made with color film, this is the real thing, not colorized.

    Awesome. I've always wondered how the dock rises. Can anyone help?

    • @sealover5861
      @sealover5861 7 років тому +9

      The bottom of the dock consists of water tanks. When they pump the water out and let the air in the dock rises. The sides of the dock are also filled with air. They keep the dock stable and stop the dock from sinking to the bottom when it goes down.

    So this was how they repaired Olympic in Belfast after her collision with the HMS Hawke? I realize this dock in the video was the one in Southampton, but I imagine Harland & Wolff would also have had one there.

    I wonder did the us owned the ss Normandie when they seized the ship and began conversion into troop ship??? I know she was owned by the French line I'm talking about when she was seized by the us

    • @sealover5861
      @sealover5861 7 років тому

      She was "transferred" to the US Navy in December 20, 1941 and renamed USS Lafayette. The conversion started after that . So the answer is Yes.

    • @kawanbrownlee9724
      @kawanbrownlee9724 7 років тому

      sealover thanks and how was the US able to pull it off I think because she was in the US territory

    • @sealover5861
      @sealover5861 7 років тому

      She was moored at her pier in New York when the US coast guard boarded the ship.

      sealover so the us took ownership of the ss Normandie and renamed her the USS Lafayette you can only think of what the captain thinking when he saw us troops

    • @sealover5861
      @sealover5861 7 років тому

      Look up SS Normandie at Wikipedia. There is a lot of info about her. The Wikipedia isn't absolutely 100% reliable, but most of it is true anyway.
