  • The installation and story behind the Neil Gow Statue at the Birnam Dunkeld junction. Niel Gow (not Neil) was born in Strathbraan on 22nd March 1727 and grew up in the village of Inver, by Dunkeld. Niel was essentially a self-taught musician, who had a flair for fiddling performing in towns and cities across Scotland and at balls in the grand homes of the wealthy.
He perform at Dunkeld House and at Blair Castle for the Duke and Duchess of Atholl by whom he was paid an annuity of five pounds, the equivalent of about £1,000 in today's money.
The Neil Gow Society made all this happen, inspired by one of Scotland's top fiddlers, Pete Clark who lives here. www.pete-clark.com/
The statue was created by the Fife based sculpture David Annand who has works in many cities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He also created a magnificent statue of another Perthshire man, John Rattray whose signature appears under the world's oldest rules of golf, the short video link • The First Rules of Gol... here the full video link to the full unveiling ceremony of John Rattray • First Rules of Golf Le...

      Sam,
Do you live in Perthshire ?
I may just have photographed the face of Neil Gow as I sat on the wooden bench under his favourite tree.
      This was 2 weeks back.

I hope to visit there someday. I learned how to play from his tunes. Where is this?

It is just over the river Tay, from Dukeld at Birnam, in Perthshire Scotland. 20 miles north of Perth on the A9 road. If you are hoping to visit, it might be an idea to visit during the annual Neil Gow Festival in March, which was over last weekend for this year www.niel-gow.co.uk/
