Atilla & Aphrodite - Cyprus '74

After over a decade of political collapse, in 1974 Greek-Cypriot nationalists toppled the Cypriot government, causing Turkey to invoke the treaty of guarantee to restore order to the island only a week later, landing troops on 21st July 1974. In only a few weeks of fighting they would take a third of the island and just under another decade later would declare the Republic of Northern Cyprus.
It's an odd experience seeing historical footage of tanks on exact spots I've stood.

Aphrodite was the name of the Greek's defence plan while Atilla was the name of the Turk's landing plan. MajorSamm at it, again.

..YES , ..! You are RIGHT !..well , ..1974 , was a SET UP war for US CYPRIOTS to loose it . you see , what ever our compatriots Turkish cypriots never manage to do from 1963-1967 ..! to develop TURKEYS ..TAKSIM plans , ! We had GREECE , from 1971-1974 ..playing.. Dirty games against US G.CYPRIOTS , and with the coup against our loyal goverment ..1974 ..gave the legal chance to TURKEY to put a step on the island ..! ..EVEN if they knew , that the Turkish army was getting ready to invate .., even if they knew that ..the Turkish army was in their ships outsite ..Kyrenia . ! .GREECE , NEVER let our local army leaders ( that time , 85% ,of the army officers., was from Greece ../ ..5-10 of them , ..was on the high rung positions ,.. ) to take a single measurer..! NEVER develop the islands ..Defence plans ! ..Turkeys air force actually bombed our army units in their ..camps/ ..on their sleep actually ..!..
.. The invation was happening on 5.20..and the Cyptiots army ..starded to react ..at 8.30...
ALSO ,..i must mention ,that since from the 23 of july till the 14 of Augast ..during the. " case fire " agreement , the Turks ,unload their 35.000 troops ,and 150-200 tanks and armour vehicles , ..
well ,after that ..NOBODY could stop them ..!
from GREECE , in that time we had only a reinforcement of a commando unit ( ..most propably., they came by their oun risk ).. and ..THREATS ..for NOT to bothered them ( the Turks ) doing so..

..So , actually ..GREECE , ..playing the game till the end , following instructions from.. Americans / Kissinger , ..NATO....and ofcourse , ENGLAND ..( that nation was/is behind EVERYTHING )! ..BETREYED US CYPRIOTS , ..and HELP TURKEY to be here ..!..
Finally , those three quarandor powers of OUR.. independence..!..

    [Verse 1]
To whom should I tell my sorrow, o clouds?
People who we regard as brothers hurt us deeply
And then there is homesickness, which hurts the most
Tell me, are there news from the homeland?
    [Pre-Chorus]
Are these rains perhaps the tears of my beloved?
Tell me, are there news from the homeland?

I am burning inside, my wound is deep
Bring me somе news from my delicate beloved
I am burning inside, my wound is deep
Bring me some news from my delicate beloved
    [Verse 2]
Clouds, say hello to my love
Tell her that the day of reunion is near
If fate sent me far away from my love
What can I do abroad all alone?
    [Pre-Chorus]
Tell me, is it possible to live far away from love?

as someone who is half turkish and half greek cyp it’s more of a bitter feeling especially when i did research on the background of the song. my dad moved to australia (where i currently live) in the 70s to escape the war, as my uncles stayed and fought. i am often made fun of and shamed when i have to tell other turks i am half greek and they frown upon it and personally for me it’s childish. it was not something we started. it was also a very long time ago. nonetheless it has not stopped me from embracing my greek culture, i have many friends who are greek and turkish myself.

    Homesickness (Abroad)
To whom will I tell my sorrow, o clouds?
Those who we regarded as friends have backstabbed us
And then there is the wound of homesickness, worst of all
Tell me, are there news from the homeland?
Are these rains perhaps the tears of the one I love?

I am burning inside, o my love
    My wound is deep
    Bring me some news
    From my delicate beloved

Clouds, say hello to my love
Tell her that the day of reunion is near
If fate tore us away from one another
What can I do abroad all alone?
Tell me, can one live far away from love?
