My mama would sing this song to me when I was a boy at bedtime. She sung it a lot like Mr Lanford did, but it was always different depending on who was singing it. I didn't appreciate it so much in those days as I do now knowing that this song wAS from our Scots Irish ancestors back in the south. I never knew that the origins of this song was an old English ballad. Being from West Texas, I thought it was just something every mother would sing to thier children at night to fall asleep quicker. It really is a beautiful song, and I encourage anyone to listen to it in its entirety. I'm very sure you'll find it as wonderful as I did growing up. Thank you Mr H for posting this wonderful wonderful video. 🥲
That is a treasure. There is a lot to be said about enjoying this type of relaxed atmosphere while performing together. You can sense the harmony, and for sharing it thank you Mr. Hoffman ✨
@MGMG-lc2fe... Nice to hear some home grown music from past generation and David Hoffman was able to film and record and preserve some of American music heritage in his documentary. Have an enjoyably evening my friend. 😊🧡🎶🎻🪕🎸🪗🎶
@drewpall2598 to a peaceful evening . Mr Hoffman has amassed quite the collection of memorable moments, but to unselfishly think to capture them, hats off to the talent and foresight required 💖🌞✨
@StephanieJeanne... It's great that David had the opportunity to film Bascom Lamar Lunsford and the vast talents within the North Carolina Appalachian Mountain.
@JWF99... Afternoon/evening Jim. It's great that David had the opportunity in 1965 to film Bascom Lamar Lunsford and the vast talents within the North Carolina Appalachian Mountain. I agree this documentary never gets old or the music. 🎶🎻🪕🎸🪗🎶

@@drewpall2598 I wish I had a snow machine! Had to do it all by hand! @@JWF99 I have never had to shovel snow in my lifetime, but scoop cat litter boxes most of my life. I know I can't call it a fair trade, so I emphasize with your sore aching back my friend. 😟
So glad to see more of this uploaded. I first heard this song on this channel last year, and the melody and the way these two sang it was so haunting I couldn't get it out of my head. I did a deep dive and listened to a bunch of different versions, and read about the history of the song. I would've loved to see them play a full version, but it seems like theu stopped before they got to the part wherr she runs away with Blackjack Davey and her husband chases after them. Thanks for uploading this. I would listen to a whole album recorded by these two.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Although I'm not familiar with the songs, they still took me back to my childhood, across the pond! My parents sang and played music, mostly at folk clubs but didn't limit themselves to just British folk songs. They loved American music too, including Bluegrass, Blues and 'protest' songs. Dad occasionally ventured into ragtime guitar and mum would sneak a jazz ballad into the mix. The guy talking about the lyrics to one of the songs in this video reminded me of when I lived in a village during the 90s. The locals held regular folk music get togethers and every time, without fail, they would sing "The House of the Rising Sun". However, they only knew the first verse so, they would sing it over and over. It was a song that my parents used to sing a lot so, when yet again my friends started singing it, I grabbed a pen and paper and went off to the nearest pay phone to ring my mum and ask her to give me the lyrics for the second verse. Instead of reciting the words, she started singing the song from beginning to end, because it was the only way that she could recall the words. Anyway, I hope that you are recovering well. I'm sure that it must be frustrating for you atm. Very best wishes to you and yours.
Im only 30 years old but Everytime I watch your videos I feel like I'm there with them. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time. Even though it wasn't as easy as today's society i would learn to appreciate things better. Love the video and can't wait to show my kids your videos when they grow up

Oh, I love this duo's voices together! The gathering of lyrics and background history is wonderful. These offerings are the things I need to wrap around myself at the end of my workday to remind me of how much strength there is in music and the people who make it. 🕊️❤️
Hi Mr. Hoffman. I enjoy your video and clips and very much appreciate the research and time you take to include the introductions to your post. Are you ok with all the 🔥 fires?? I'm thinking of how horrific and devastating it would be to loose everything like that. Thinking of all your years of work and what you are trying to accomplish by creating new videos of your old videos... how important it is to you, your family and to us! When I see your video notification I get excited because it is like finding an out of print book that you didn't even know existed but somehow now treasure! Prayers of safety and protection. Pray Psalms 91 over your property lines!!! Hugs from Kentucky
Thanks for sharing! I do love the version by Bob Dylan, but I also like the one that Doc Watson and his grandson, Richard performed but they called it Gypsy Davey. And the song kind of reminds me of Fairport Convention’s Marty Groves song! (My favorite version being from their live version on their album called Farewell Farewell.) Similar story!
Some of the best music I have heard come from ordinary folks just relaxing whether it be after work hours or on a weekend for a together. I like the laid-back feeling between Harold and Margaret Winters when they sang and played their instruments. Enjoyable description writes up David.😊👍🎸🎻🪕🎶
What makes me sad is they are likely all gone now. I am glad they live on through film. 😢😊
These melodies and voices are so hauntingly stirring aren't they.. Thank you for sharing Mr. Hoffman
That Bascom Lamar Lundsford was dedicated to saving all those voices. And you got to be a part of it!
