There are dozens -- maybe hundreds -- of possible causes for back pain. Because of this, pinpointing the nature of a back problem can be something of a mystery .
But only a few causes are specific to pain on the right side of the back. Disorders related to the liver, gallbladder and pancreas are prominent among these. Problems in these organs feature pain that can occur in both the right upper abdomen and the right upper back.
Cirrhosis, forms of hepatitis, swollen liver and fatty liver are conditions that affect millions of people worldwide.
Gallstone attacks, gallbladder attacks and bile duct blockages typically require a hospital stay or surgery.
Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, is extremely painful. It can actually be life-threatening because of the disruption it causes to the digestive system.
Appendicitis is another disorder that can cause right side back pain. While appendicitis usually hurts primarily in the right side abdominal area, it can also cause back pain on the right side. .
Here are some other common causes for back pain that can occur either on the right side or the left side, depending on the origin of the problem.
Angina is a symptom of heart disease. Typically, it feels like pressure or squeezing in the chest. But it's not unusual for angina to cause discomfort in the your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or -- yes -- your back.
Kidney disorders. You have two kidneys -- one on each side of the body, A kidney stone or a kidney infection on the right side can cause pain that ranges from a mild to intense.
A urinary tract infection. These usually cause discomfort in the lower abdomen, but can also radiate around to the back on either side. They're often accompanied by fever, nausea and a burning or stinging sensation when you urinate.
Intestinal disorders A number of intestinal problems trigger cramps, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea and, sometimes, back pain. Irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, celiac disease and diverticular diseases are relatively common conditions that can cause back discomfort.
Reproductive iisues In women, an ovarian cyst, an ectopic pregnancy or a number of other gynecological problems cause pain in the back.
Nerve injuries. A nerve in your spine may be damaged or compressed and the pain could radiate to the right side of your back (or even down to your legs). Sciatica, a condition in which the sciatic nerve is damaged, could cause discomfort almost anywhere in your lower back.
Muscle injuries. You can also cause left side or right side back pain by lifting something that's too heavy, or performing the same task or exercise too much or too often. Back injuries, of course, also happen in sports competition, depending on the activity. These usually involve muscle pulls, strains and sprains.
Cancer, Malignant tumors, of course, in any of the organs of the torso can cause pain in the back or front.
Finally, right side back pain may simply be a result of poor posture. Sitting in one position for long periods of time (like in front of a computer screen), can cause pain in any number of places in your back.

Thank you for posting. Where I am, we had a public health system. You have covered in this video all the different reasons that the different doctors and emergency care staff have also covered and investigated as possibilities in my case. They have done every single test. The pain is on the right side, under the rib abdominal pain that sometimes shows up in the right middle area area of the back. It’s intermittent. Days might go by when I don’t feel it and then it shows up, twice bad enough that I had to go to emergency. It’s been going on for about 3 months now. Bloodwork, CT scan, abdominal ultrasound, GI consult all clear all good yet the pain still remains. Thanks for posting I think what you have covered is accurate.

I have lower back pain upper back pain that throbs deep inside goes away and comes back & stabbing pain in my right and left side of stomach and under by breast area all tests labs , x rays , kidneys pancreas ,gall bladder , apendix seems great no infection no inflammation , uterus etc..all come back great been to the E.R so many days a week as this pain is robbing me of my life and still no answers as to what it is ! ...i need answers i worry about the worsest things

Had the same issues and testing with all clear results. When I slept on the right side side it ached after a while so would roll to the left and relieve the pain momentarily, sound familiar? I experimented with changing my posture when sitting at the computer plus exercising the lower back with strengthening and changed my diet too. This has helped amazingly and no longer have to keep turning side to side when sleeping.
