EXPLAINER: Why PH should have more resources in extended continental shelf

- Maritime law expert Jay Batongbacal explains the importance of the latest Philippine submission on the extended continental shelf in the West Palawan region. Clue: we're entitled to even more resources under international law.
The continental shelf is the seabed that extends far beyond our shoreline you might say this is the foundation of our island. Think of our island as the trunk of a tree and the soil as our sea and underneath the soil are the roots radiating outwards. We can mow claim that the integrity of our tree (our islands) is very much dependent upon the integrity of our roots (in this case our continental shelves). The roots of one tree may overlap the roots of a nearby other tree. So by comparison the continental shelves of our country may overlap with the continental shelves of Vietnam and Malaysia. In short the science and geopolitics of it, it fortifies that China has no legal and scientific claims in this area.

Palawan claimed a share of the Malampaya gas revenue due to its location on the extended continental shelf. The Supreme Court rejected this claim. Before using Palawan's argument, why not give Palawan its rightful share first?
