  • Check out our more recent video of Vange Well: • Cash's Vange Well No.5...
Built by money-maker Edwin Cash in the early 1920s, Vange Well No.5 was an enclosure for five wells which were sunk into the rear of Hovells Farm. It was said to have had 'magic properties', and this was cashed in on, although it's sickly qualities were soon picked up on, and Cash became unstuck. Now in 'Martinhole Wood', Langdon Hills nature reserve.

The first time I discovered this place was with my friends back in 1992. We always thought it was creepy but we'd always go back. Then a couple of years later me and one other friend went there. What happened there, and in broad daylight, still gives me chills to this day. I have only been back a hand full of times since ...
And I've now recently read that a local ghost hunting group has visited it a few times too.

This week in one of the national newspapers it was reported that ghost hunters and investigators have visited the site and stayed over night and that the following day they had feelings of anger as if wanting to kill ! The best way to find it is to visit one tree hill ss179hn make your way to the visits centre car park and walk across the road, follow the narrow path into the woods and keep going, you will see a little wooden bridge and a dried up stream, turn right and follow the stream, looking to your left you will see the well hidden in the woods. Remember to bring your crucifix !

Yep, read that article and honestly we thought it was a load of b**** 😅 just because somewhere looks creepy in its abandonment doesn’t mean it has had a troubled past, nothing murderous anyway. I’ve camped in these woods twice! Whilst I feel ghost stories can certainly add to historic sites with tragic stories I think it shouldn’t detract from first understanding the actual history of the place which arguably doesn’t need additional elaboration to make it exciting! A spooky atmosphere definitely adds to an explore but don’t think it should be taken too seriously unless people have actually lost their lives at a site - well worth a visit either way

@@BeyondthePoint I agree, when I went there the only feeling I got was how do I get back to the car ? It would have been nice if the council had invested some money into a rebuild as I am sure it's a site of historic interest and history of the area.

pinkyman5155 It would be good if something was done with it, it’s not in great shape. Each to their own with the ghost hunting but I think some places seem more credible than others!

It can be tricky the first time. It’s on the far edge of the wood just before it goes into field, opposite the carpark along One Tree Hill. It’s roughly where the wood indents to the north east.
