In regards to Starlight's "rushed" exposure to the Human World, I suspect her comfort came because Sunset immediately instructed her on everything. Unlike Twilight who went into the Human World "blind" and had to navigate it and learn about it on-the-fly, Starlight was standing with THE Pony-to-Human expert, Sunset Shimmer! Sunset most likely gave her a quick run down on human etiquette and "what to do's" and "what not to do's" and since Starlight is so brilliant it wasn't all that difficult to remember.
Remington True. Sunset must've taught Starlight how to use those "hands", to hold the ice-cream. Besides, those two characters have a lot of things in common, so. Sunset knows how to use some difficult human movements, Starlight knows how to use some difficult spells. Just a couple of Mary Sues...
Still though, I feel like that would have been a much better story. Just Starlight and Sunset embarking on misadventures in the human world. I mean, defeating a new villain was something Starlight could have done in Equestria. If you're gonna bring her to the human world, then at least make full use of the concept.
Yeah, but it doesn't count if you take these three episodes as a single "thing". As DrWolf said, both Dance Magic and Movie Magic have led up to Mirror Magic.
I guess, but I personally don't. The least I can think back to Mirror Magic, the better as far as I'm concerned. Dance Magic was my favorite and that episode stands perfectly fine by itself.
i was a bit disappointed with the way they handled Sunny returning to Equestria. The one thing i did love though was Pinkie. Pinkie Grabs Camera... NO WALL HERE XD.
I agree with Sunset returning to Equestria. I don't get why Twilight couldn't have been there with Celestia or, well, just focus more of this episode with Sunset returning to her home world but realizing that she belongs on earth
Something just occured to me, Twilight wrote to Sunset via the book and told her that Starlight could stay there a bit. What if the next one has Sunny return to the pony world again, only instead of Twilight meeting them at the mirror, It's Celestia accompanying her. Im still laughing at Pinkie Pie though. ehh, NO WALL HERE XD. And there's the ending that gives the shippers more Fuel.
RubberyCat Well, there is no way to tell when the two take place. I do wish what you say is the case, but I know better. The show is trying to remove Twilight in favor of Starlight
There was one more line I loved that I don't think you hit on. (I'm sure I'm butchering it) Sunset: "...and since I don't think there's much chance of you running into you over there..." Starlight: (Absolute deadpan): "Not every day you hear that"
How to make EQ movie or episode: 1. The name has to contain the word magic, words related to magic, rainbow, friend or friendship and/or words related to pony or horses. 2. Make a new bad guy for each film or episode. 3. Have the characters wear atleast one costume that the toys will have. 4. Have the bad guy have an evil form. 5. No one knows how magic works but then they can use it like a pro when needed. 6. Pinkie breaks the 4th wall and jokes about it. 7. No one calls the police or special forces when shit goes down, instead, let teens with magical powers solve the day by using magic or talking to the baddie and then forgive and gorget it instantly when the situation is over. In the seguels, make an explain everything what happen last time and make a joke about it. 8. Singing. 9. Plot always revolves around one of the cast member's personal issue and the bad guy, corruption within them, abuse of magic and/or magical item. Every baddie is redeemable majorty of the time or neutralized. 10. Sell the toys.
Starlight and Sunset bounced off eachother SO WELL. I've really been annoyed with Sunset not standing out amongst the other girls, almost feeling like she's just an audience expy at times. To a small degree, I've had that issue with Starlight as well. But when they were together, both of their personalities really shined. Both characters are at their best with other characters besides the primary cast, but unlike Starlight who's been getting more of those characters to interact with like Maud, Trixie and Spike, Sunset... just doesn't really have anyone. During Rainbow Rocks she kind of had the Dazzlings, and she was at her absolute best in that movie. And during Friendship Games and Legend of Everfree she had Twilight, but since she's basically just filling the other twilight's role int he group that only works so well. I guess, I just want more characters and personalities for these two to interact with, and I would love to see them together again in the future. ...and seriously, stop turning people into magical demons. Makes the writers look like they're running out of ideas.
There are so many things about this episode that I thoroughly enjoyed (Sunset's brief return to Equestria, Sunset and Starlight interacting, etc), but the problem to me is that none of these elements felt fully realized. Most of the scenes with the two, enjoyable as they were, felt cut short while the less interesting ones often went on longer than they needed to. What's worse is that IMO they pretty much blew a grand opportunity by having Starlight save the day on her own. I have nothing against Starlight herself (she's grown on me more and more over time, in fact), nor do I think Sunset always has to be the big hero in EQG, but having them team up against Juniper would've fully embraced the idea of putting the two together and been overall more interesting. It also would've fixed the issue of Sunset basically having no reason to learn to go with the flow more. Honestly, the fact that the ending doesn't seem to have much closure to it and that a lot of plot points didn't seem to go anywhere (ex. Sunset's fears about what's coming next) gives me a strong impression this is actually meant as little more than setup for whatever's next for EQG. It'd feel quite meaningless to allow Starlight to stay for a few more days and not show any of it; hopefully, she'll at least be in a 2-minute short or something. There's a ton of possibilities with her that they haven't even touched; I think the only main character she interacted with at all was Sunset, and again even that was somewhat toned down. I suppose the great elements in here are worth the weak elements (and even then, what we did get isn't terrible perse), but man is it difficult to shake off the feeling that with one more rewrite it could've been so much more. I wouldn't even mind this much if it wasn't for the fact that, because we only get so much EQG each year, they may never get a lot of these opportunities again. It's actually part of why I'd like an EQG series; anytime something falls flat, it'll be much easier for another entry to pick up the slack. I'm glad you were able to see mostly good in it though, and yeah I definitely feel like keeping this at 22 minutes was the better option.
Okay I just remembered another issue that I have about the special. As much as I've enjoyed the interactions between Sunset and Starlight, I honestly, like you, believe that the bonding between them should have been an episode of it's own (A slice of life one I'd say). It could have been an episode with Starlight showing Sunset around Equestria and how much has changed since Sunny left (as well her getting to see Celestia again after all this time), and we could have also have more scenes of Sunset showing Starlight around Human world and during both times, they could be talking about their past mistakes to each other, maybe even with quick flashbacks of younger years during their respective growing-up that might show us additional things about them both that the Fall of Sunset Shimmer comic, the S5 Finale, and S6 premiere didn't show us (or at the very least, expand upon them), then they'll talk about the things they did after their reformations. I really believe that couldn't have made their bond much greater, believable, and relatable than the third special ever could IMO.
1. Dance Magic 2. Mirror Magic 3. Movie Magic I would love to see future EQG content be more episodic like this, however I see lots of room for improvement. I think that reducing the frequency of magic villains or catastrophes would work better for EQG. it's a crutch I don't think is needed. I'm thinking more grounded conflicts like social or personal ones would be more interesting.
I think I enjoyed all three episodes, even though each of them had ups and downs. Overall, I think Mirror Magic was the best, with Dance Magic being slightly better than Movie Magic. Mirror Magic simply had the most funny and/or exciting moments, like Pinkie searching for the fourth wall, Sunset as pony or Starlight as human. Dance Magic had an awesome song and Movie Magic just had a predictable story line. The only positive parts about Movie Magic were the callbacks to the show (power ponies, Daring Do). We all know how many fourth walls Pinkie has broken, and the line "We are such a forgiving group" may just be another one, but what she doesn't notice are the similarities of the villains. Each of them has been redeemed very quickly and I just cannot think it work that way, especially now that Juniper has an even quicker turnaround than every villain before her.
3:46 Well, to be fair, all Starlight had to do was wrap her hand around a cone. Sunset could have explained, or Starlight saw the person making the cone, holding it, and just decided to copy them.
Honestly, it's the character interactions that make me come back to the Equestria Girls stuff, even if the Human world is not as fantastical as Pony World Equestria. And personally, I think this Spin-off has potential to be its own series. I've seen some well-written fan fiction that primarily took place in the EG world. And it's nice to see the official show makers do these in shorts rather than full-length films.
I enjoyed Mirror Magic. Also, I knew Starlight was going to meet Sunset Shimmer at some point. Starlight is a character based on Sunset, so I'm not surprised. But with my favorite character in MLP, and my favorite character in EG meeting each other and creating a relationship? Wow, that makes me wanna embrace EG more. Wow, two episodes from both series are also on the way to make Starlight more likable. And I love it. But I did felt it was rushed, but I understand how difficult it was to fit all of the plot in one episode. And I'm pretty sure all of the events here probably happened during the events of NLP: The Movie, seeing how much Starlight's character is more developed than how she tried to handled the situation in "A Royal Problem", so I would rate this 7.5/10. I also love Sunset and Starlight together! #StarSet4Ever!
From what I can gather, it seems the writing, show staff and director are possibly heading towards a EQG TV Show. if that were the case, I made a pention for it to make this reality. But overall, the EQG specials were amazing.
The absolute best part for me was when Pinkie was trying to find a way out of the mirror. The "no wall over here" line startled a laugh out of me, and I loved it. You're right, though. Juniper just wasn't a strong enough villain to hold up a longer film. I do hope they can expand her personality in the future, much like they did for Sunset, but with what we had here she just came off as the stock vain type.
Tbh...I didn't quite enjoy it as much as most people did. Looking at all three shorts as a whole it feels sort of incomplete. What made the movies so good was the obvious build up to the eventual climax. For instance, in Rainbow Rocks, my favorite of the movies, the entire plot was spent building up to an eventual showdown of bands between the Rainbooms and the films antagonists, The Dazzlings. These episodic specials did feature some kind of connecting theme, but I can't help but feel they were also too independent. Honestly I enjoyed Movie and Mirror Magic because there was some element of suspense and action. Dance Magic was way too much of an SoL for me to really enjoy. Even with a catchy music video. Frankly though, Mirror Magic was best overall cuz it had one crucial element. A looming threat. Though the way things ended could have been better. Like perhaps they could have had Starlight temporarily "Pony Up" to take on the big threat instead of ripping from The Cutie Re-Mark and To Where and Back Again. In conclusion, I'd say they should go back to the general movie format since they could do so much more with it as opposed to stuff like these specials. Also, Love your reviews Doc. I'm a big fan. -Culture Shock
Movie Magic =Best of the three. The problem with Mirror Magic was the third act. Because the writers felt they had to justify Starlight being there, they had to worf the entire Mane cast, despite the fact Rainbow Rocks showed that this didn't need to happen. And as a result of Starlight being the one that has to save the day, Sunset's concerns about magic are unresolved, and the conclusion/moral she reaches at the end is completely opposite of what the story tells her. She was in the right to be worried about her friends and the magic that creeps into the world, yet apparently she shouldn't worry about that kind of stuff. Basically the final third is so jumbled that it throws the rest of the story out of balance. That being said this was much better than the Season 6 finale IMO since the Mane 6 are still characters in this and the beginning bits with Sunset as a pony were wonderful. Now just show us her reuniting with Celestia for Pete's sake. As for the format, either way IMO. Given that these episodes were far more serialized than the main show, I think it works better, nevermind serialization is something I wish the main show would do as well. Basically whatever works best for the story.
There are a few fully unresolved reunions &/or potential reunions: Twilight & Moondancer, Twilight & Trixie, Starlight & Sunburst, Rainbow & Gilda, Sunset & Celestia. We only recently saw Luna & Celestia; there was a bit of Twilight & Cadence. Not much of Luna with CMC. Coco works for Rarity now, but no real fashion focus between them yet. Perhaps the Mane 7 reaching out to former antagonists again & failing -- Lighting Dust, Suri Polomare, etc. How about these various reformed unicorns set up a magic research network? Not unless these are already in the comics.
I probably would have preferred it if they had split "Mirror Magic" into 2 episodes. this could have likely been better for pacing. though some fudging to the sequence of events might be needed to make it fit better into a 2 part structure; probably with Juniper rampaging about a bit before running into Sunset and Starlight. first part: build up with the mirror; Sunset does some stuff in Equestria; and Juniper captures the mane six and goes into demon mode as a climax; ... second part: Sunset and Starlight come back, do some stuff, run into Juniper in demon mode (who has already been rampaging for a while by this point), realize the others are trapped in the mirror, and the rest plays out roughly as before, but less rushed. as for Dance Magic, could have maybe downplayed Rarity some and focused more on some of the other characters. as for Movie Magic, all in all pretty good. no major complaints this time around.
Starlight pretty much beat Twilight's record for saving the day in less than three days. Without magic no less. She is DEFINITIVELY destined for something special...
My biggest curiosity is where the specials line up relative to the series timeline. We see Starlight alone because of the mane 6 going off on some big save the world adventure, which begs the question what are they doing exactly? A couple of times the eqg movies lined up with events in the main series: Twilight becoming a princess, the finale in season 4. The specials specify a mission, but big missions rarely come along. So I'm curious about these specials possibly alluding to the finale or even the upcoming movie.
I got the impression it was some point in season 6 because of Starlight's comment about the fact she's supposed to be learning about friendship (can't remember the exact wording right now) which wouldn't make a whole lot of sense after her graduation. I could easily be wrong about that though.
Yeah, I can see thee being map missions that happen between episodes but not one that required all of them to go. I dunno. It's possible they're just giving themselves some flexibility by being deliberately vague about the timeline, but it would be nice to get some idea of when things happen.
It could actually be the Yaks: Remember that Starlight did NOT consider herself ready to leave in Celestial Advice, and even though Twilight consider Starlight to have graduated, she's still happy when Starlight learns more. The Mane 6 was away "on a friendship problem", it was not explicitly stated that it was a map assignment .... and to get back to the recent yak episode, I think Pinkie did call it a "Friendship Problem", if only briefly.
Hands down my favorite of the 3 was Mirror Magic. Sunset and Starlight meeting... in Equestria... Sunset horse... just the feels! Also I like how Sunset reacted to having use of her horn magic again, and it was just enough that it wasn't dwelled on for too long.
shinjojin Those are fine too, it's just her knit cap, black vest, and ripped jeans give her a really rebellious vibe. Which is ironic considering when we were first introduced to her, she claimed to be against the concept of individuality. It's super appealing to me ^^;
Kyiko The Thing About It Is She Could End Up Being A Community Activist And Advocate Or Something. Just Like Fluttershy Could Grow Up To Be A PETA Supporter/Tumblr Follower.
I love all three, cause 1. Each episode feels like a whole equestria girls, split into three are better than all combine. 2. These three episodes are all relate to each other, but in separate ways and different points of views.
What's also cool about this episode we get to see Flash Sentry make a cameo in the background. Nice to see him get SOME screen time. Also, Human Starlight has a very great design.
Seriously with Juniper. When I go onto Tv tropes and the List Mlp villains on Wikipedia they have Juniper listed as a major villain. Seriously? Honestly, the Starlight haters should stop bitching because I think we found a villain with a way worse motivation.
2:18 Not exactly unique, when successfully using Reasoning since "The Cutie Re-Mark". Film or Episodic Specials...? For the sake of pacing, Episodic would be more easy going, bit more than just 3 specials, & filmed for climactic adventures... I would have to favor a tie between Movie/Mirror Magic, because.. Movie Magic > We had a beginning, middle, & resolution, but little climax, despite being Scooby-Doo referenced. The crook was caught red-er-yellow handed, & was punished for her actions. Mirror Magic > We had a beginning, middle, & an underwhelming climax/resolution. The antagonist, Juniper Montage, felt like a watered down Catrina, Starlight's reasoning seemed like what was passed down from the Cutie Re-Mark, & Juniper Montage seemed to get her penalty off-screen (being fired from the mall) or no penalties at all. Say Doctor Wolf, implying that Starlight stays in EQG universe could've been a long follow-up after Celestial Advice, ever since the Mane 6 would be called away to a friendship problem, to which I'm guessing is the Friendship Is Magic: The Movie.
I loved it when sunset went back to Equestria and brought back another pony as it was something I had wanted to see since I heard about the possibility of a second movie. I am still waiting to see the human main 6 visit Equestria to see how they how have been human all their lives would react to becoming ponies. I love how this episode builds on the continuity of the first two episodes and gives us an example of how seeing your hearts desire can corrupt you like eluded to in Harry Potter with the mirror of Arrest. I would like more Equestria Girls shorts but I do hope they don't go the way of agents of shield and get ignored when the next movie comes around and I wish they would have an effect on the main friendship is magic show especially now that starlight glimmer has visited.
I think we can say with this one that the magic that is coming from Equestria is just random energy until it latches onto a strong emotion. It's like a flame looking for a candle. Gloriosa, Twilight and now Juniper all had strong emotionaly based goals and the magic fueled them. I did love Pinky in this episode. I was surprised that Sunsent insisted that Starlight keep a low profile, after all who in CHS doesn't know that that portal is there and that occasionally you get visitors from Sunset's original world? Also have to ask, does everybody who goes through magical transformation have to get a great looking dress?
Weeeellll.... I'm not sure if they should stick with the episodic series format or go back to full length movies. My favourite out of this bunch is Movie Magic, my least favorite is Dance Magic and Mirror Magic is in the middle.
number 3 stood out the most for me. Finally, we get to see Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer meet for the first time and it was enjoyable to watch. I also enjoyed seeing Starlight in human form, too. Was unique. Though the villain didn't leave much of an impact, but her appearance in the second one made me wonder what was gonna happen after she left. When it ended, I was rather puzzled until the third one cleared that up. And Pinkie was spot on for saying they were a really forgiving group. It gets a B in my book. lol
A television format definitely works better for this kind of story, but a multiple episode arc would likely be the happy medium that an Equestria Girls TV series would need. See Star Wars Rebels' "Trials of the Darksaber" and "Legacy of Mandalore" for an example of this sort of set up done right.
It was a good Episode indeed. The only thing I did not liked was, that the Transformed Girl looked very similar to Gaia Everfree... only without all the leafes and entwine... I mean, how often can such a Character Design be recycled before it becomes dull? ^^
I enjoyed the interactions between Starlight and Sunset, the comedy and the mirror magic that affected Juniper that fuelled her revenge against the Mane 7. Personally I enjoyed all three specials it's hard to choose which one is my favourite. I think the EG series can work both ways as an episodic series and films ^^
Also, if you ship Sunset and Starlight together, the name should be StarSet, because using the other syllables would make it SunLight, which could represent any of these 4 characters: Twilight Sunset Starlight Sunburst
Well if this ever became a series, it looks like follow the Miraculus Ladybug formula, and have a character of the episode that gets manipulated by Equestrian magic.
My God Dr. Wolf. I just realized something mind boggling. A detail we've somehow glossed over. But a few warnings; although none of what I'm writing is a spoiler for the new "The Perfect Pear" episode, I wouldn't have thought up this crazy theory without it. So... SPOILER WARNING JUST IN CASE We've always been asking, "Where are Applejack's parents?" And the most common answer, hinted at by the show time and time again (the two shooting stars) ("Oh, sugarcube, if Mom and Dad were here, they'd be so proud of ya") ((New episode) "Mom and Dad left us somethin' to remember them by") is that they are deceased. But I'd like to argue that this wasn't something that occurred straight from the outset. It is a given that we've never seen a single scene in any episode of the show with Applejack and her parents. It's believed that she and Big Mac were left on the farm since the beginning. But it is also worth mentioning that Apple Bloom was never spotted in any of these past flashbacks as well. Even since Applejack was an infant in Apple Family Reunion, we've never seen any sign of her parent's influence. I'd like to put some more emphasis on the words _"Family Reunion."_ Why are Applejack's parents not at this event, reigning in their daughter and making sure she isn't, oh I don't know, devouring all the apple fritters while ducking under the picnic tables? More examples of episodes showing Applejack and Big Mac without Apple Bloom and their parents _at the same time_ include The Cutie Mark Chronicles and Where the Apple Lies. How is it that even since she was a little baby, Applejack's parents were nowhere to be found, yet the younger sister that is Apple Bloom still came to be? And Apple Bloom is younger by no small margin, so she couldn't have just been an even younger newborn than Applejack, sleeping in a crib off-screen. But it still begs the question: why was Granny Smith the one taking care of them in the years before Apple Bloom, and not her parents? Just where were her parents in those days? The parents could not have been dead by this point otherwise Apple Bloom would not have been born, yet if they are alive during this time, why keep themselves shuttered from their family? And that's the true question at the end of this theory. They must be alive for Apple Bloom to enter the picture later, but why are they never on-screen, playing the parenting role that Granny is having to do? So there you have it. Just some wild delusions I cooked up. Hope you enjoy.
I really liked the continuity between "movie magic" and "mirror magic" with the main 7 talking about keeping their "geodes" on them. This caused the magical transformation of Juniper. They did not know it would happen, so in trying to be prepared for disaster, they accidentally caused it.
I love Starlight's human design, except for one thing: the eyes. She has round eyes as a pony but ... jeez, what do I call them... sharp angular eyes in human form, complete with darker eyeshadow. It's kinda jarring. There are a lot of other eye shapes to choose from, so why this one?
FINALLY this one premieres in the States! An interesting change of pace, but hopefully now they can get back to regular MLP episodes? Like that one about AJ's parents I've heard about?
Mirror Magic is definitely the best of the three, but I think they should stick to feature length movies. The biggest reason is the music. I think the music is the best part of Equestria Girls, and I like that, for the most part, each film has been structured like a musical, with songs providing exposition, character development and group unity. The show has songs too, of course, but they are usually one-off's or single episodes. And with the EG specials, we only got one song, and it was one that was already released.
both formats work I would like to see 13 to 24 episodic EQGs followed by a 2 hour movie finally. The tight Strawberry Shortcake style continuity sells it. Over all the righting is neither the best nor the worst MLP has to offer. Honestly if you like this please do try SSBBA. And the best part was Mirror Magic. Very Miraculous Ladybug of them
I thought it would make for fun cross overs. I would love to see twilight with the sunset shimmer book, or them to mention it in the mlp as they already do so in esquestra girls. Maybe have them check for cracks between the worlds.
Well I agree it would make for a good half and hour series, and I'd like to see them go beyond the school setting to other places so we can get more culture in their world. And I liked Dance Magic mostly to see the Shadowbolts and hear more words come out of their mouths that aren't just nasty insults.
Does it matter? We saw a few at the end of Legend of Everfree, but that was after the whole incident that gave Gloriosa Daisy powers to begin with, which suggests that the crack in the portal keeps leaking magic randomly. There's potential for countless villains for the human group to face.
Personally, I thought that Mirror Magic was ... meh. Like you said, there could have been a lot more development. However, IMO, setting the choices as "single 22-minute episode" vs "full-length feature film" is a false dichtomy; there is a third option, namely, a two-parter. And now that I think of it, a two-parter would have been the perfect way to end this mini-series, as it would have given sufficient time for development of Starlight's acclimation to the EqG world, development of WHAT exactly the Evil McGuffin was, and development of the stakes as Juniper slowly descends into narcissistic madness or as the mirror slowly crumbles around the Mane Seven. As far as your other two questions, the answers intertwine in my opinion: To the question of which of the three was the best in my book, I would cast my vote for Movie Magic. It, more than the other two, show the EqG world as its own world, not just as a vaguely reskinned MLP:FiM. Which leads me to the remaining question: I think that EqG would be best ether as short vignettes to break up the stream of MLP episodes, or else as full-length videos. I doubt that there is enough room for EqG to be its own spinoff series with MLP still going strong.
When you mentioned that the episodes were to be released on DVD only, I worried. As someone who can remember well having to go through the "unknown" stock of a video rental store, in hopes of finding an appreciable work, have seen my share of works released straight-to-video... good AND bad. 😯 So when I learned that the trio of EQG episodes were relegated to such a fate, I feared the worst... as in: Something to watch sent on a search for an audience, and doing so in the least-costly way. Plus, in-light of the upcoming release of the MLP: FIM movie the the big-screen, this may be their way of trying to segue a new series into the market, without the expense of airtime... in case it doesn't appeal to a large enough audience, that is. What do you think?
I think now more than ever EG needs to move into a TV series because as of now, 2 is really the only one out if the 4 that truly was written well and wasn't rushed. Doing more of these 22 mins Ep would help EG a lot. Plus it could help in keeping FIM alive a bit longer, even if they begin work to go to Gen5 (which really should be like 10+ years after Gen4).
I think this worked really well. As each story was ultimately writing the back story for the next, it ultimately works out more or less the same run time as a movie to tell the over-arching story. But as each story also worked on its own merit, it avoided being filler like it would be as a movie. I think The Legend of Everfree would have worked much better in this format.
Mirror Magic was my favorite by far, for really only one reason: Sunset Shimmer goes back to Equestria. A second reason is part of that reason: she's been human for so long she forgets to act like a pony. That was easily the most adorable moment from Best Pony.
1) format - having the episodic release feels more like a regular show rather than a special. Like the production staff is old hands at it now. I liked it about as much as I liked the movies, which was, "not bad". I am getting tired of refirmed villians, though. Other than Sunshine Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle contantly reminding everyone they were bad, they have't seen the concequnces of their actions. I really liked the Stalwart's chastizing Juniper at the end. Just because she didn't mean any harm doesn't excuse her actions. And what her parents? Did they not hear from their brother when he fired Juniper? 2) I do like the way they are handling Sunshine Shimmer. She has the wisdom and experience to understand what magic is and can do for and to people. And not just magic, but unbridled power over people. She is and acts older than the mane 6 in EQG, and is in a great position to lead them through the mine field of using power/magic. She is almost like an agent of Celestia for rhe girls in this world. if you are still reading, thank you for sticking to the end. "Mirror Magic" was my favorire of the three, but I would have liked to see Juniper have to deal with the consequences of her temper tantrum rather than be forgiven right away.
While I enjoy the longer story options in the Movies, I really liked these shorter epps too. I like that they'd already learned the lesson from MLP that things should be more serial, a feeling of an evolving story over long periods. Now, on the other paw, I've noticed something about how magic interacts with the human world. Each time we've seen a magical "big bad," with the exception of the Dazlings, it really appears to me that the magic is desperately trying to help the person who goes "villain. However, either due to the non magical nature of the world, the "disharmony" of the host or some mix of both it goes horribly wrong. We get an exaggerated, twisted version of the antagonist, even when the character, like Sunset, has a clear plan and goal in mind it gets taken to a super dark, super exaggerated level.
Anyone else wondering where that random bit of magic even came from? Has there just been bits of that flying around the city causing trouble? Is there a source of it? I like the mystery of how the new magic works, but to keep the audience interested in this kind of thing, I hope the writers learn to answer one question for every two that they raise for us.
Personally, I'd like a movie, if they don't do another "Big Bad gets corrupted my magic" thing. Otherwise, I'd be happy with more of these episodes. Of the three episodes, I liked Mirror Magic the most, but that was mainly because of pony Sunset. I think story-wise, I liked the dynamic of Movie Magic the best, and it is the kind of story I am hoping for in a future movie. I like conflicts that require the protagonists to think, as well as have the cool abilities, and I like a significant amount of mystery to be present.
I enjoyed the interactions between Sunset and Starlight so much that I just wish they stuck to that. Maybe have an entire special about her getting used to the human world. I mean, what's the point of bringing Starlight to the human world if you don't take full advantage of it? Starlight defeating a new villain is something that could have been done in the show itself.
Well, to be honest, I feel your right that it need to be 22 minutes format. Since they brought up magic powers in the second episode. I think Also be better to work as a magical girl series. Maybe even throw in a human version of either Disord or Sombra. Where a character has there character flaw amp up and become a monster.
It would seem to me that they are using this as a way to introduce an EG episode series. And that they realized they can't totally detach the series from the original Equestria pony universe. That would seem to be why they introduced Starlight. She can act as a bridge between the worlds without using Princess Twilight and having to deal with conflict over her and Sci-twi. Which makes good sense and it provides more expandability for episodes. But, it is fairly obvious they want to expand the EG universe into full season episodes. And if they can keep up a good story and maintain some continuity it might work out. But, they should look at expanding they human world quickly to keep an interesting story going, tho.. not too quickly.
DR. Wolf, do you ever think that the magical explosion from the last movie might the reason why magical item random pop around people who have problem? Because a lot cartoon show use story about dark stuff possess people like example Miraculous Ladybug and Randy Caninngham the 9 grede ninja
I wouldn't mind if Equestria Girls got it's own show alongside the original and think it would be interesting to have both shows giving their own unique stories. Also, out of the three specials I think I liked Mirror Magic the best, though Dance Magic had the best song.
Asking did you see the two episodes that were just released of MLP Friendship is masgic Season 7 Episode 12 and 13 I had sent you links to it yesterday Just wanted to know if you seen them?
Starlight may have learned to use her hands pretty easily, but I love how she still didn't have enough control over them as she kept letting her ice cream spill all over the place.
If they go with a series I can this taking cues from the series Miraculous Ladybug. If they have a recurring villain with his own source of magic who that he uses on people who have been corrupted by items enchanted with Equestrian magic we'd have a good reason for the girls to use their powers and even their crystal guardian outfits.
BUT I LIKED THE FILLER! It kept the story going along. An it was not boring. The parts that slowed down where not in this episode. It was in fact very good. The dialog however was not all direct. That could be better. But the episodes in itself. It was Excellent. Not perfect. But Excellent.
Everytime i see a powerfull magic item on screen i get jelly. I can only imagine the freedom such power would give. Dreams that can never be a reality.......
Honestly I kind of like the shorter episode format along with the possible storylines. In some ways it reminds me a little of a more kid friendly version of say Static Shock. Which dealt mostly with otherwise normal teenagers being given super human abilities and the various impacts it had on them. Granted they weren't like the girls in Equestria girls, since those dealt with things like gang violence, isolation, abandonment, homelessness, etc. Still I think the magic could easily serve as metaphors for various problems and issues that surround teenagers and could allow for some entertaining stories.
Dr. Wolf!!!! I would hate to seem like I'm rushing you or I'm being unreasonable but Discordant Harmony and Perfect Pear have been released to the web!!!! When will you be reviewing them!?!
And honestly, Starlight really didn't do very well with eating that ice cream...
You say that like real humans don't make messes like that. It's kinda the fun way to eat ice cream
I understood you until the last sentence.
Still though, I feel like that would have been a much better story. Just Starlight and Sunset embarking on misadventures in the human world. I mean, defeating a new villain was something Starlight could have done in Equestria. If you're gonna bring her to the human world, then at least make full use of the concept.
I'd like to see an EQG thing that doesn't involve a demon for once.
imgur.com/YAGpXPd
Dance Magic and Movie Magic didn't involve any demons.
Yeah, but it doesn't count if you take these three episodes as a single "thing". As DrWolf said, both Dance Magic and Movie Magic have led up to Mirror Magic.
Richard Dong there is no demon in this episode but there is a monster which was Juniper Montage
Why Twilight couldn't be there? She was probably in Yakyakistan with Pinkie and the rest of the Mane 6 .... ^_^
RubberyCat oh....😆
RubberyCat Well, there is no way to tell when the two take place. I do wish what you say is the case, but I know better. The show is trying to remove Twilight in favor of Starlight
There was one more line I loved that I don't think you hit on. (I'm sure I'm butchering it)
Sunset: "...and since I don't think there's much chance of you running into you over there..."
Starlight: (Absolute deadpan): "Not every day you hear that"
How to make EQ movie or episode:
Exceptionally disappointed there was no Celestia/Sunset reconciliation
Maybe they're saving that for an entirely different event.
+supervideomanic2 They better!
supervideomanic2 We can only hope they do. Otherwise there's going another Alderaan situation at hasbro.
@@supervideomanic2 Nice prediction. You get a cookie 🍪
^ I agree with most of this, especially with the idea of Starlight and Sunset teaming up against Juniper. :)
1. Dance Magic
2. Mirror Magic
3. Movie Magic
I would love to see future EQG content be more episodic like this, however I see lots of room for improvement.
I would flip (in a good way) if they announced a 13 episode season for EQG. Screw the haters
if done right sure.
Same. I'll find myself dancing the streets the moment I see a trailer for such a thing.
3:46
Well, to be fair, all Starlight had to do was wrap her hand around a cone.
Im actually proud to say I enjoyed Mirror Magic more..cus of course Sunset and Starlight together was my biggest wish to happen!

Yolo Broadcast Channel Or How About A Full-Fledged TV Series
There are a few fully unresolved reunions &/or potential reunions:
Twilight & Moondancer,
Twilight & Trixie,
Starlight & Sunburst,
Rainbow & Gilda,
Sunset & Celestia.
Mike Smith
You have a problem.
"We are a REAALLY forgiving group." ...Too forgiving.
I could easily be wrong about that though.
wendyheatherwood I considered that as well but I couldn't think about a big event that happened without Starlight.
Yeah, I can see thee being map missions that happen between episodes but not one that required all of them to go. I dunno. It's possible they're just giving themselves some flexibility by being deliberately vague about the timeline, but it would be nice to get some idea of when things happen.
It's like the Bug Bear, from episode 100. Not really explained, but it was given a simple line, and it required all six.
We want a review of these episodes: Discordant Harmony (7-12) and The Perfect Pear (7-13)
He already did a review on the episode Not Asking For Trouble.

Flynn Yeah that happens! X3
I will say, I absolutely love Starlight's EQG design.
Honestly, I find it okay-ish. I still prefer some of the fanmade designs that the fandom came up with for her, especially the ones made by Osipush.
shinjojin Those are fine too, it's just her knit cap, black vest, and ripped jeans give her a really rebellious vibe. Which is ironic considering when we were first introduced to her, she claimed to be against the concept of individuality.
It's super appealing to me ^^;
Kyiko The Thing About It Is She Could End Up Being A Community Activist And Advocate Or Something.
That's what I like about Starlight Glimmer, she's a fast learner.
Ok, now are you going back to MLP? 2 new episodes came, thanks to Australia; A REAL Fluttercord episode, and the Apple parents one.
I'd have liked to see more of Sunset in Equestria rather than Starlight in EQGverse.
I'd like to have seen both. Why couldn't they switch places for a day or something?
Also cut out Juniper because she's a shit villain.
Seriously with Juniper. When I go onto Tv tropes and the List Mlp villains on Wikipedia they have Juniper listed as a major villain. Seriously? Honestly, the Starlight haters should stop bitching because I think we found a villain with a way worse motivation.
3:35-3:48 Not to mention she did a backflip perfectly while fighting Juniper... She's op
Loved that little Pac-Man joke this special pulled. And Pinkie's 4th wall adjusting and comment about being forgiving. XD
1:32 pause here and gaze at the best face ever seen and embrace it, also make the face, i dare you!!!!!
Love to see a story where both Maine sizes meet!
I actually liked this finale and hope this does lead to help build another set of similar episodic series
Also, if you ship Sunset and Starlight together, the name should be StarSet, because using the other syllables would make it SunLight, which could represent any of these 4 characters:
Twilight
Sunset
Starlight
Sunburst
Well if this ever became a series, it looks like follow the Miraculus Ladybug formula, and have a character of the episode that gets manipulated by Equestrian magic.
My God Dr. Wolf. I just realized something mind boggling. A detail we've somehow glossed over. But a few warnings; although none of what I'm writing is a spoiler for the new "The Perfect Pear" episode, I wouldn't have thought up this crazy theory without it. So...
SPOILER WARNING JUST IN CASE
We've always been asking, "Where are Applejack's parents?" And the most common answer, hinted at by the show time and time again (the two shooting stars) ("Oh, sugarcube, if Mom and Dad were here, they'd be so proud of ya") ((New episode) "Mom and Dad left us somethin' to remember them by") is that they are deceased.
When Pinkie grabbed the camera and said "No wall here!"
Actually physically shook my head. face palmed, and whispered "God Damnit Pinkie...."
I really liked the continuity between "movie magic" and "mirror magic" with the main 7 talking about keeping their "geodes" on them. This caused the magical transformation of Juniper. They did not know it would happen, so in trying to be prepared for disaster, they accidentally caused it.
The first "Magic freak" of the specials.
I say it as a reference to the Meteor Freaks of the Smallville TV series
I love Starlight's human design, except for one thing: the eyes. She has round eyes as a pony but ... jeez, what do I call them... sharp angular eyes in human form, complete with darker eyeshadow. It's kinda jarring. There are a lot of other eye shapes to choose from, so why this one?
That is an actually interesting criticism.
That is a good question.
Will you be reviewing the 2 Australian release episodes?
both formats work I would like to see 13 to 24 episodic EQGs followed by a 2 hour movie finally.
And I liked Dance Magic mostly to see the Shadowbolts and hear more words come out of their mouths that aren't just nasty insults.
mmmm wait a minute how many lights got of of the portal and how many did we see in the chow i have only seen one.
Does it matter? We saw a few at the end of Legend of Everfree, but that was after the whole incident that gave Gloriosa Daisy powers to begin with, which suggests that the crack in the portal keeps leaking magic randomly. There's potential for countless villains for the human group to face.
Alex Eden you know what that means there still more episodes 😆
Which special was your favorite?
I Love All 3 EQG Specials.
Best Continue of the Equestria Girls Story.
As far as your other two questions, the answers intertwine in my opinion:
To the question of which of the three was the best in my book, I would cast my vote for Movie Magic.
Personally, I've been waiting for an Equestria Girls series since the first movie. They seem to be taking their sweet time building up to it
Hey Doc, what did you think of Starlight's design in the human world?
where do you watch theses online
I think now more than ever EG needs to move into a TV series because as of now, 2 is really the only one out if the 4 that truly was written well and wasn't rushed. Doing more of these 22 mins Ep would help EG a lot. Plus it could help in keeping FIM alive a bit longer, even if they begin work to go to Gen5 (which really should be like 10+ years after Gen4).
This was the one I enjoyed the most and I feel like it depends on the story and how engaging or how much detail it has
I think this worked really well.
I like Dance Magic best - because of the music video, but I must say I enjoy Starlights design as human quiet much, she looks quiet cool.
Would have loved to see Celestia and Sunset interact.
I think we need an Equestria Girls TV show, like we were promised 4 years ago. and I preferred Mirror Magic
I'm surprise at Dr. Wolf only mentioned Pinkie's forgiving lines and not her randomness and 4th wall breaking moments.
I feel like the only way the writers can have Starlight Glimmer be the hero is if the mane six were incapacitated.
That's how I felt too. They could have at least have her team up with Sunny in this special instead of being the sole hero.
They did this in MLP too with the season 6 finale.
I know, but I was kinda hoping they don't do that again here with the Humane 7, which they did. :(
Hewy Toonmore excellent point
Anyone else wondering where that random bit of magic even came from? Has there just been bits of that flying around the city causing trouble? Is there a source of it?
I like the mystery of how the new magic works, but to keep the audience interested in this kind of thing, I hope the writers learn to answer one question for every two that they raise for us.
Where did you see these? I can't find them anywhere...
You can find them on Dailymotion.
they remodeled an old school bus. I think they'll go on a road trip. I hope they keep that bit in the next movie
Because a lot cartoon show use story about dark stuff possess people like example Miraculous Ladybug and Randy Caninngham the 9 grede ninja
so, when do we get to hear the rest of Dr Wolf Day Care?
I wouldn't mind if Equestria Girls got it's own show alongside the original and think it would be interesting to have both shows giving their own unique stories. Also, out of the three specials I think I liked Mirror Magic the best, though Dance Magic had the best song.
Davalious It Would Be A Proper Cool Spinoff That Way I Tell You That Much.
my favourite in the "Magic" searies as I call it was dance magic (mostly for the song)
Asking did you see the two episodes that were just released of MLP Friendship is masgic Season 7 Episode 12 and 13 I had sent you links to it yesterday
Just wanted to know if you seen them?
Starlight may have learned to use her hands pretty easily, but I love how she still didn't have enough control over them as she kept letting her ice cream spill all over the place.
If they go with a series I can this taking cues from the series Miraculous Ladybug. If they have a recurring villain with his own source of magic who that he uses on people who have been corrupted by items enchanted with Equestrian magic we'd have a good reason for the girls to use their powers and even their crystal guardian outfits.
Where is the Perfect Pear review? That episode was amazing and heart breaking 😣😢

Am I the only one who thought that clip he used was an Ed, Edd, n' Eddy reference?
Dr. Wolf!!!! I would hate to seem like I'm rushing you or I'm being unreasonable but Discordant Harmony and Perfect Pear have been released to the web!!!! When will you be reviewing them!?!
I enjoyed Mirror magic the most. Cuz first. The two other shorts finally added up. And second. HUMAN STARLIGHT AAAA. PONY SUNSET AAAAAAA.
honestly I wanna see sunset meeting the pony counterparts of the mane 6 in equestria
