Lady of Shalott rose by David Austin can be trained as a shrub or as a short climber in the garden. It is up to the gardener. I am explaining how to do it.
Hello Olga, thank you for your video. I was trying to find answers and I believe you’ve touched on it a bit here. I’ve ordered Lady of Shallot 2qt pot that’s only offered as a shrub from David Austin and planted it in May. The shrub is now big and has many shoots but hasn’t flowered since and has no flower buds. I wish I could post a picture. Middle stem is much longer and thinker then all others as you’ve mentioned in the video. How can I promote it to flower? Should I trim/prune all stems or is it not advised to do it this soon? Any recommendation would be great. Thank you.
Hi Anna, I am going to do video dedicated to why roses don’t bloom. There can be several reasons and no more. So stay tuned. I probably will do it this week and hope it will help you and your rose.
I just ordered the same thing..2 L of S quart Shrub Roses. They sent me the Climbing L of S I already planted them b4 i noticed. Going to call them in the morning. 😮.
Thank you for this video. I thought DA sent me a wrong type of Lady of Shallot because I ordered a shrub but I got a climber. Now I understand that it can do both.
Such a great video, for someone like me, who wants to get a first rose bush. After long research i decided on DA lady of Shalott. Wow, such a beautiful colour. Thank you.
Thank you for this video, even though it's old. I bought one this year, and although the tag says climber, the plant seems more like a bush. I love how you just put your arms in the rose like nothing. I'm a man, and you have more bravery than me. I'm way more careful around roses.
It's a surprise! The color of the rose is so different from the one in Japan! Maybe because of the climeit. Also it's really useful information. Thank you.🐸❤
Thank you for explaining that Olga. I was looking at the David Austin website yesterday and noticed that as well. I have a baby rose of this variety and she is coming along nicely, but I noticed the other day that she has two really long stems coming out that look more like climber. Now I know what to do. Thank you very much.

I planted three of these together as a clump this spring. They have proven to be very vigorous bloomers and I love the color. I came across my first climbing shoot today while dead heading so your video was very helpful. Love your posts and garden.
I have three and they grow 12+ feet here in zone 10a Florida. It could definitely be grown as a climber or rambler. The video appears to show them more in a pink hue but I can assure you they are mostly cantaloupe/burnt orange color with yellow.
Wow this was so informative 🏵️, I am planning to purchase The Lady of Shallot, wow it is large and has more colors coming out than I imagined, thank you for sharing your roses to us and tips to train it into a climber! 🏵️🌼🌹🌼🏵️🌹
I believe that in your wonderful video here you have answered the mystery of my 'Lark Ascending' rose, which I bought thinking it was a shrub rose, but it began immediately shooting-- ascending-- skyward, until at around 8 feet high we began cutting it back to around 4 feet, and whamo, blossoms eventually became profuse and beautiful. The problem for me was why do they call it Lark Ascending if it is meant to be a shrub?! Now thanks to you I believe I could indeed grow it as a climber. Thank you SO much!
Beautiful!!!! I love the content you share from your garden. This was very useful information for any gardener. I think I accidently made my climber a shrub rose. It isn't fragrant and only grew to be about 5 feet tall on one shoot. The first year it was over 12 feet tall with many new stems. Thank you again for your shares. I can't wait to follow you from my garden in Ohio.
Thanks for this review Olga. I’ve decided to buy Lady S. for my small front garden and grow it as a bush. I’m hoping it’ll grow well in a large container., probably a 30” trough.
The first buds of my Lady of Shalott are now forming, it’s growing well in the container. Incidentally, I have since went a little wild in my local garden centre and have also bought another four David Austin roses. These are Eustace Vye, Mill on the Floss, Golden Celebration and Scepter’d Isle. I’ll let you know how these all thrive in pots at the end of the season, if you’re interested?
So gorgeous! Thank you for the information about the shoot in the middle. So helpful! The color looks very different in this video than the last. We're the two videos taken at very times?
My Lady of Shallot behaves like that, color change is drastic. You will see it during this blooming season. I am going to monitor it specially to all the viewers who are confused about this rose's color.
Thank you for this video. I just bought one of these roses thinking it was a shrub rose only to find the tag indicates it's a climber. The rose is tiny right now, so I have been trying to figure out if I need to install an obelisk now for the support it might need in the future. It is good to know I do not have to treat it as a climber.
Your videos inspired me to purchase 3 David Austin Lady of Shallot plants today! I was so happy when I happened to find them at a nursery here in CT that I completely missed that it says "8ft - climber" on the pots! I was planning to plant them next to a sitting area to give a little privacy, so the 5ft shrubs would have been perfect! Do you know if these "climbers" can be trained to be shrubs by the way you are describing in the video? I don't know what to do:) They are currently about two and a half ft tall and very bushy and healthy looking. Thank you so much!
Lovely video! May I ask, should I trim the tall shoot at any time or do I let it grow and trim it next spring? I planted three lady of shallots last spring and am attempting to train them to become a hedge!
Thanks Olga. My baby is still a baby. I do see a long shoot. I want to grow it as a shrub. When should I start trimming? If I trim it mid-season would I not be losing its flowers?
Ugh gorgeous! This rose is not available as bare root right now. would you say there’s a huge difference in the growing process / hardiness of a bare root vs. a 2 or 3 gallon pot ?
David Austin has just shipped me a climbing Lady of Shalott when I thought I had ordered the shrub version. I completely understand how to turn the shrub into a climber, but will it be obvious how to turn the climber into a shrub? Won't they have cut off the parts of the plant needed to create the shrub and left the stems that shoot out? How long until it recovers? I already have a Lady of Shalott climber that has beautiful flowers but is the opposite of vigorous. My Claire Austin climber hates me too. My two Darcy Bussell's are shrubs and absolutely spectacular, so I decided that I should stick to shrubs and leave climbers to better gardeners than me! Thank you for any advice you might proffer.
Here in the UK David Austin’s website only has this as a shrub. I had it in a pot and in one season it grew so big I’ve planted it in the ground against a trellis. There is one trained on a wall at Austin headquarters as a climber. Strange they don’t sell it as a short climber as they do in the US.
Hello Olga! I love your Lady of Shallot roses. They’re so beautiful.😍 I would love to add them in my David Austin roses garden. Thank you for an informative video as well.🥰💕💐
Hi Olga, I am advised by gardeer ben @ north lodge that he prunes his roses at different heights to obtain near perpetual flowering. Be well, phill, birmingham England.
So beautiful. :) I'm waiting to get Lady of Shalott next spring. Wow, can I grow her like yours? I envy you so much. Thanks for sharing such pretty images.
Those roses are spectacular and I am looking forward to next spring so much already! I believe everyone can grow roses, as long as rose needs are met. Happy gardening!

Hm, I don't grow that rose. It is a shrub rose and is quite big. The difference in care with all other roses would be in trimming it. Shrub roses don't want to be trimmed drastically as hybrid teas. Just one third in spring will be fine. As for the feeding, mulching and watering, everything should be more or less the same.
@@OlgaCarmodyOh ok. thanks for the information Olga. I didnt know this. I hard pruned it beacuse i thought the roses will not bloom on old wood. Because all the leaves that were growing on old branches were wilting and turning brown and falling off just barely after sprouting. Have treated it with some fungicide. Hope it recovers.
Hi Olga. Can I train Lady of Shallot climbing rose to grow around an arch as opposed to just growing straight up a lattice or a wall? Please answer. Thanks for your advice & your beautiful videos!
Lady of Shallot can be trained as a climber from the shrub form. I will explain how you should do it in my answer to your previous question.. Stay tuned.
Hi there! Lady of Shalott rose is hardy to zone 5, so be careful with winter protection. I garden in zone 6/7, just borderline and my rose doesn't need any protection. She is around 11 years old and every winter is fine for her. As for the wind. It is a big shrub, so cutting her down for winter is advisable, unless you have your LofS in wind protected space. I do, my back garden has strong wind protection. LofS is somewhat prone to blackspot, and if you have rainy summer, that can be a concern. I don't have any other issues with her, just blackspot, which is generally our problem here in North England, CT with roses. As for the future rose selection. Oh, there are so many choices. I would recommend looking into roses hardy to zone 4, this way you don't need to do super winter protections on them. Hope it helps. Happy gardening and thank you for watching!
Hi olga. I bought this rose after seeing your lovely videos and planted it as a bare root. I'm in the UK so it's a grafted rose. I'd like to grow it as a shrub. If I bought another one next year and planted it with the first rose like you have, would it grow the same or would it be a lot smaller. I hope I'm making sense. Best wishes davena x
Hi Davena, If you decide to plant another rose a year later, make sure that the older one is not taking sun and space from the small one. Ideal situation would be to plant 2 shrubs at the same time. Thanks!
Great video! Could you train some David Austin climbers to be a shrub as well? Say Crown Princess Margareta climber can be kept small by pruning it back every year? Thank you for making great videos!
Some roses have this dual nature to grow as a climber or a shrub, depending on the training. Crown Princess Margareta is a climber, can never be trained to be a shrub. I am going to film a video about this topic and will list all the roses of David Austin which have climber/shrub habit. Thank you for your question! Stay tuned!
OMG! So beautiful LOS. How do you keep LOS rounded and neat as shrub rose without any support ( obelisk /trellis)?? Mostly, I can see the people recommend to use support with LOS, otherwise the octopus branches makes messy looking.
I trim those branches, here is the video link where I show how to train Lady of Shalott to be a climber or a shrub - ua-cam.com/video/hmyrsB1702Q/v-deo.html Hope it helps. Happy gardening!
So happy I found your video showing the Lady of shallot rose, it's beautiful, I am going to order it from David Austin ,it will be my first-time ordering from them ,is now too early to order for next spring shipment, only bareroot rose available now, did you get 2 quart potted rose or bareroot rose ?
I got bare root roses, always do. I prefer rose bushes to travel in mail in dormant state. They are well packaged and sustain less stress than pot roses. And place your order now- they ran out of my first choice roses very fast this past spring. Shipment will be according to your planting zone and you don’t need to worry about timing.

Stay tuned.
Amazing..

I've never seen LoS with this much pink coloration.
Thanks!
@@OlgaCarmody thank you so much
thanks Olga for sharing, can you share how you control thrips?
I will definitely be walking in my spring garden and show those pesky thrips. But in a short answer, I use horticultural or néem oil on them.
Would the rose grow a stem that would make it a climbing rose every year?
Yes, rose will be growing long stems every year.
I trim those branches, here is the video link where I show how to train Lady of Shalott to be a climber or a shrub -

Hope it helps.
@@OlgaCarmody Thanks for your great info !This is my first year of planting roses, I am in zone 10a , hot and dry southern CA ,hopefully my roses will grow well.Have a wonderful summer and enjoy all the roses in your beautiful garden !
Hello, I would like to grow CAROLYN KNIGHT rose as a climber. Do you think is it a good idea?
I live in US and unfortunately DA doesn’t sell this rose here. I was trying to do some research on it and am almost positive that Carolyn Knight is a shrub. It would be a good idea to talk to DA company and ask them. Happy gardening!
In their site it shows orange color for this rose. But here I see it as pink, was there anything different?
Yes, in my garden this rose starts orange and finishes her blooms in pink/ pale pink.
Dzień dobry, piękna róża 👍💯🥰
Thank you!
Does that mean you can train Eden & Earth Angel Roses to be shrub roses instead of climbers too? Your roses look so healthy and beautiful btw 😍❤️
No, not every rose has that ability to make long shoots. Eden is a climber and you will torture it if you decide to keep it as a shrub.
Hi Olga,
In the David Austin catalogue...are the roses bud grafted or own root?
If grafted, on what understock?
They will come grafted. You have to go onto DA website and choose section with own root roses.
