  • Lady of Shalott rose by David Austin can be trained as a shrub or as a short climber in the garden. It is up to the gardener. I am explaining how to do it.

    Hello Olga, thank you for your video. I was trying to find answers and I believe you’ve touched on it a bit here. I’ve ordered Lady of Shallot 2qt pot that’s only offered as a shrub from David Austin and planted it in May. The shrub is now big and has many shoots but hasn’t flowered since and has no flower buds. I wish I could post a picture. Middle stem is much longer and thinker then all others as you’ve mentioned in the video. How can I promote it to flower? Should I trim/prune all stems or is it not advised to do it this soon? Any recommendation would be great. Thank you.

      Hi Anna, I am going to do video dedicated to why roses don’t bloom. There can be several reasons and no more. So stay tuned. I probably will do it this week and hope it will help you and your rose.

    Thank you for this video, even though it's old. I bought one this year, and although the tag says climber, the plant seems more like a bush. I love how you just put your arms in the rose like nothing. I'm a man, and you have more bravery than me. I'm way more careful around roses.

    I believe that in your wonderful video here you have answered the mystery of my 'Lark Ascending' rose, which I bought thinking it was a shrub rose, but it began immediately shooting-- ascending-- skyward, until at around 8 feet high we began cutting it back to around 4 feet, and whamo, blossoms eventually became profuse and beautiful. The problem for me was why do they call it Lark Ascending if it is meant to be a shrub?! Now thanks to you I believe I could indeed grow it as a climber. Thank you SO much!

    I have three and they grow 12+ feet here in zone 10a Florida. It could definitely be grown as a climber or rambler. The video appears to show them more in a pink hue but I can assure you they are mostly cantaloupe/burnt orange color with yellow.

    Your videos inspired me to purchase 3 David Austin Lady of Shallot plants today! I was so happy when I happened to find them at a nursery here in CT that I completely missed that it says "8ft - climber" on the pots! I was planning to plant them next to a sitting area to give a little privacy, so the 5ft shrubs would have been perfect! Do you know if these "climbers" can be trained to be shrubs by the way you are describing in the video? I don't know what to do:) They are currently about two and a half ft tall and very bushy and healthy looking. Thank you so much!

    David Austin has just shipped me a climbing Lady of Shalott when I thought I had ordered the shrub version. I completely understand how to turn the shrub into a climber, but will it be obvious how to turn the climber into a shrub? Won't they have cut off the parts of the plant needed to create the shrub and left the stems that shoot out? How long until it recovers? I already have a Lady of Shalott climber that has beautiful flowers but is the opposite of vigorous. My Claire Austin climber hates me too. My two Darcy Bussell's are shrubs and absolutely spectacular, so I decided that I should stick to shrubs and leave climbers to better gardeners than me! Thank you for any advice you might proffer.

    Here in the UK David Austin’s website only has this as a shrub. I had it in a pot and in one season it grew so big I’ve planted it in the ground against a trellis. There is one trained on a wall at Austin headquarters as a climber. Strange they don’t sell it as a short climber as they do in the US.

      Some roses have this dual nature to grow as a climber or a shrub, depending on the training. Crown Princess Margareta is a climber, can never be trained to be a shrub. I am going to film a video about this topic and will list all the roses of David Austin which have climber/shrub habit. Thank you for your question! Stay tuned!

    So happy I found your video showing the Lady of shallot rose, it's beautiful, I am going to order it from David Austin ,it will be my first-time ordering from them ,is now too early to order for next spring shipment, only bareroot rose available now, did you get 2 quart potted rose or bareroot rose ?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  3 роки тому

      I got bare root roses, always do. I prefer rose bushes to travel in mail in dormant state. They are well packaged and sustain less stress than pot roses.
      And place your order now- they ran out of my first choice roses very fast this past spring. Shipment will be according to your planting zone and you don’t need to worry about timing.

      I live in US and unfortunately DA doesn’t sell this rose here. I was trying to do some research on it and am almost positive that Carolyn Knight is a shrub. It would be a good idea to talk to DA company and ask them. Happy gardening!

    Does that mean you can train Eden & Earth Angel Roses to be shrub roses instead of climbers too? Your roses look so healthy and beautiful btw 😍❤️

      No, not every rose has that ability to make long shoots. Eden is a climber and you will torture it if you decide to keep it as a shrub.

    I've got a question: do you deadhead as each blossom fades, or do you wait until the entire shrub is finished with its flush? I'm looking for solutions to keeping the shrub neat through the growing season, and I'm wondering if pruning it all at once helps with that. Usually, I deadhead as individual flowers fade, but that means one shoot is putting out new growth while other shoots are still on on their original blooms. I don't like the wild and messy way the shrubs look by the end of the summer. Does pruning all at once after the flush help with that? Just curious what you do, and what you think.

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  2 роки тому +4

      I prune through the growing season, and the reason is the same as yours, I don't like messy shrubs, which they tend to become to the end of summer. I see a faded bloom, I take it down. I see a long octopus shoot, I cut it down..

    Ольга, это потрясающий и красивый куст! И как здорово вы все обьяснили, спасибо!
    Я выбрала эту розу для своей первой розы в моем маленьком саду, выращивание в виде кустарника до 1.5м. И вопрос: как хорошо она переносит зимы до -20-23? необходимо ли укрывать молодой кустик? и как она себя ведет при долговременных дождях и ветрах? Я живу в достаточно теплом климате (5а зона) в атлантической Канаде, но часто лето бывает дождлвым( постоянные дожди с перерывом на несколько дней). Подвержена ли она заболеваниям или выгоранию на ярком солнце?
    заранее спасибо за ответы! И возможно вы посоветуете другой сорт для моих климатических условий?
    Татьяна

      Hi there! Lady of Shalott rose is hardy to zone 5, so be careful with winter protection. I garden in zone 6/7, just borderline and my rose doesn't need any protection. She is around 11 years old and every winter is fine for her. As for the wind. It is a big shrub, so cutting her down for winter is advisable, unless you have your LofS in wind protected space. I do, my back garden has strong wind protection. LofS is somewhat prone to blackspot, and if you have rainy summer, that can be a concern. I don't have any other issues with her, just blackspot, which is generally our problem here in North England, CT with roses. As for the future rose selection. Oh, there are so many choices. I would recommend looking into roses hardy to zone 4, this way you don't need to do super winter protections on them. Hope it helps. Happy gardening and thank you for watching!

    Hi Olga, can you do a video on Lichfield angel? How to care for it?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  11 місяців тому +1

      Hm, I don't grow that rose. It is a shrub rose and is quite big. The difference in care with all other roses would be in trimming it. Shrub roses don't want to be trimmed drastically as hybrid teas. Just one third in spring will be fine. As for the feeding, mulching and watering, everything should be more or less the same.

      @@OlgaCarmodyOh ok. thanks for the information Olga. I didnt know this. I hard pruned it beacuse i thought the roses will not bloom on old wood. Because all the leaves that were growing on old branches were wilting and turning brown and falling off just barely after sprouting. Have treated it with some fungicide. Hope it recovers.

    Hi there ! I think it's my first time commenting on one of your videos but i watched a few :) Thanks to you, I bought the Lady of Shallot rose recently (I'm not giving her the best conditions in terms of sun exposition but it seems to be trying it's best ! After watching your last video I discovered this one and I wonder...If my bush does like yours, could it be possible to train some stems against the wall and keep the rest as a bush or as soon as you don't cut that vigorous stem, all of the bush starts to behave as a climber ? 5 feet ? Wow, I'm 5feet1 :D Here in France on the label it says 4 feet 1....

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  Рік тому

      Thank you for your comment! Yes, you can train some of the bush to be a climber, and some as a shrub. You might be not successful, since it is up to your rose how it wants to distribute nutrients. Those long canes and all the laterals coming out of them can put rose into the mode of not producing many new basal shoots, which are needed to create a bush canopy. It doesnt hurt to try and see. Happy gardening!

      @@OlgaCarmody I have a new LOS that seems to be most interested in putting out new climbing shoots. Should I just trim back those longer canes or peg them back into the rose for next season? I didn't realize leaving climbing canes would detract from achieving the bush habit so this was initially my plan
