It's often attributed to Sun Bear, who was indeed Native American (Chippewa) but only recognized as a 'medicine man' by his New Age hippie 'tribe' not by his own people. He wrote some fine books, but he did NOT write this song. It was actually written by midwife Diana Hull at a women's gathering, took it's own life & has been translated into a few other languages! Diana's still alive and can verify this as true. When contacted by a friend (responding to another UA-cam video giving Bear Tribe credit) here is Diana's direct response: 'The River She Is Flowing was originally sung by me and then shared with a group of midwives in 1978 or 1979. The song spread wildly fast, from one group to another group-among midwives and healers over the years. Some of the women I originally sang with were sitting in ceremony with native americans in the 1970s. They may have brought the song into that arena. I do not know of sun bear and have never heard of his association with this song.Sun bear did not write this song, but sun bear may have sung the song and influenced its spread. Many people have. The song connects us all to the mother, as a young woman opens her heart, bringing forth these words: The river she is flowing, flowing and growing the river she is flowing down to the sea Mother carry me a child I will bear to thee Mother carry me down to the sea These original words and the tune came from a deep-felt connection to the mother and to the future child I would soon conceive and bear. This song flows on in the river that returns again and again to the heart of the Mother who carries us all. There are many women who remember when I first sang my song to them in Santa Cruz in 1978 or 9. I never added to the song, although at the time I first sang it, people said that I should. Multiple variations exist, variations began soon after I birthed the song. The original song has been morphing in the world for nearly 4 decades. You can look up my name and find credits on some recordings. On one recording, I too sing with a group of women, including a few who heard the original song, as first sung by me. I absolutely love that The River is Flowing has carried forth into the world to become all that she is today.
