Not really, her delivery was terrible. Maybe as one who is not a native English speaker, you didn't notice that. The words are beautiful, but the way she says those words...just ghastly. It's sad that thousands of people hear Polly Jean Harvey make a mess of a nearly-400-year-old piece of writing, and cheer her for it, yet there are countless talented poets, orators and dramatists who perform their own work in public, and do so before crowds of 12 people at the local recreation centre. Such is the difference between a rock star and an artist (mind you, the two are not always mutually exclusive).
Henning GS Yes, I was wrong. I'm fairly sure the BBC didn't show that part though, even though the full show is now on the iPlayer. Maybe it was cut out for time because it pushed it marginally over the hour.
Well, she's just using the moment to read a piece of writing that 99.9 percent of her fans clearly don't give a fuck about, as they don't know how to shut the fuck up and LISTEN during a reading--which makes their applause at the end of it meaningless. PJ Harvey is in front of her FANS, she could read a restaurant menu, they'd cheer for it. Polly Jean is just being pretentious. Seems kind of odd to shoehorn the whole "no man is an island" thing into a discussion about the UK leaving the EU.
And that's as close to an open political statement as you'll get from her. I know she doesn't do the most professional job of it (and muffs the word 'promontory'), but you get the point just from that grim expression. 'Last Living Rose' is a deeply ambiguous song (like a lot of them), expressing how you might your country even though it hurts you, even though it's awful. I'd pray she would run for Parliament if I didn't think it'd destroy her.
Oh good gosh, she's can't even read one of the most oft-quoted pieces in the English language, and you want her in public office? Good luck with that one. We actually need fewer people in Parliament--the system benefits the few.
1:07 "ANY...MAN'S...DEATH...diminishes me!" Poetic delivery doesn't get more amateurish than that, folks. Notice how pop stars are sometimes called "recording artists", but how often do you hear of a poet being dubbed a "literary artist"? Something's wrong.
beautiful.

I adore this woman, utterly.
Excellent Choice.
I always come back to hear that again.
Love you, Polly.
Spot on.
Classe!
Well, Britain is an Island. Saved us in the war. Let's see if it can save us again.
All the food fuel and weapons shipped from overseas as well as foreign servicemen saved you.
Let's see what can save you again.
"if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less" Goes the poem, of course, the clod is f*cked the most.
Well that was a very objective point made about Brexit.
Man may not be, but the UK is.
Brilliantly done. I think it is obvious that she is not a bigoted brexiteer
Hope she repeats it at Glasto later today.
Nope, but Polly and the band were great.
err... she did.

Oh fuck I hope not.
If a cloud...

is she pro brexit or remain?, seriously cannot tell.....

That's a remain vote for sure.

I don't understand. I would think her ode to England was to free England, but apparently it wasn't.
Appropriate choice of poem... but terrible execution
Good to see I'm not the only one who recognises a horrible reading.
I adore Polly, but I agree with you.

Does it really matters? I belive we should be grateful for this message delivered in this time...
I've got Richard Burton reading this poem. He does a much better job than PJ Harvey. I liked her hat, though.
