@@obviousgame As understand it, persitant saving of scriptable objects are not possible at runtime. You can change the content of it, but it is only in the memory. If you want to persist or load SO at runtime, you have to de/serialize it and save it anyways.

I heard that using SO for saving is not the best idea...
You heard, but have you tried ^^ ? Also it is used to save key variables (coins, level, etc..), not an entire player data !

Yes either using json, binary or player prefs. But that is normal for any save system , even if you dont use scriptable objects@@sadbuttrue666
