    here is the part I don't understand and am confused about. Why do I need to buy a Swiss GC Bootcard from Ebay? Can't I just use a normal sd card to memory card adapter? Load the hacked save files on to that, and let a game load the save file which then jumps to swiss? what am I missing? why do I specifically need two different memory cards plugged in? can't I just have the hacked save file + swiss all on one SDcard? And then have a normal memory card for normal save files?

    • @KopperNeoman
      @KopperNeoman 5 місяців тому +1

      The SD Gecko isn't a memory card simulator, it's a passthrough. The GameCube and PS2's memory card ports natively support SD Cards, but the pinouts are physically incompatible. That's what an ADAPTER is. You can use an SD Card as a Memory Card, but not just by plugging it in. The GameCube recognises it as an SD Card and the save file manager even tells you it can't use that device, the same message it gives for the microphone. That's why you need to use Swiss' memory card emulation software to create a virtual memory card on your SD and use that.

      I wanted to play Link's Awakening on my GameCube with the GameBoy Player... and I did a bunch of 20 minute videos that were all garbage and never published them. Then then a year later I took some film and editing classes online and, despite the release of Link's Awakening on Switch, I still had the desire to bring all of the answers to my own questions to light.
      I plan to do a video on XenoGC, and I just found a secret (mwah-ha-ha-ha) way to get my hands on a GC Loader without paying $150, so I'm going to do that. I know how to get Homebrew on the Switch, so I could cover that. At some point I'm going to crack the secret on how to get N64 games to run on the GameCube using one of the loaders... that definitely deserves a video.
      But... I don't know how much more I'd do. I'm only really into Nintendo, and it takes a long time to do these.
      The first one was 100+ hours. This one was 30+ (my editing skills improved, and I allowed for some mistakes without re-recording properly).

    I have a rather tricky (and long) question tho… basically I now have the save state exploit all up and running (windwaker) and I’m wondering if I can run a back up of windwaker the same way I run other back ups or would this automatically screw up the exploit? The benefits would just be the dvd not running and not having to switch memory cards round. Any advice appreciated!

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  3 роки тому +1

      There's a new feature for a virtual Memory Card which can be enabled in the Swiss Menu. If you turn that on then you can save to SD (which I had previously thought to be impossible - because it's hardware). If you do that you should be able to take out the memory card and the ISO version of Wind Waker will still work. Just be careful to not overwrite your WWHack card. :)

    First off, wanted to say a big thank you for getting me this far. Haven't been able to find any guide any where near as helpful as yours, so thank you. My question, I have a coppy of SSBM and was going to message an ebay seller about a swiss card. My problem is that I have a USA gamecube, my melee disc says DL-DOL-GALE-USA on the front, but on the back like at 4:44 it says DOL-GALE-0-02 JPN, so do I ask the seller to use the game save hack for the Japanese or everywhere else boot file. Thanks so much for covering how to boot with game disc!! Been trying to find a video about this. Most of the other videos require Action Replay disc which is too expensive at the moment.
    I have a question about the game saves. When you play your game backups from the large SD, are your saves stored in the same SD card?? Or is it saved onto a Gamecube memory card? I'm trying to see if I need to purchase a larger 3rd party memory card to save game backups

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  3 роки тому +3

      GameSaves always go on the real GameCube Memory Card. You can use GCMM to offload GameSaves to the SD card when you need more space. Supposedly I'll be receiving my first batch of memory cards tomorrow. If you'd like to order from me (which will have to be direct through paypal until I have the store set up) I can include a second card at a reasonable price.

    Since my GameCube doesn't have Serial Port 2 to install SD2SP2, I have to use the SDGecko method. When using the SDGecko method, am I limited to 2GB memory card max for storing game backups? That equates to one or two games so I wanted to double check because I have had trouble finding a direct answer.

    • @KopperNeoman
      @KopperNeoman 5 місяців тому

      As long as your boot method supports SDHC, you can use up to a 2 TB SD card formatted to FAT32. If it doesn't (like an Action Replay disc) you'll need to use a regular SD card to boot it (4 GB ones exist, but are rare) and then hotswap once Swiss is loaded.

    I was with you until 10:34. Why do you need the Dolphin application? Isn't this the GC/Wii emulator? I do not want to emulate GC games, I want to run them on the GC hardware. I must just be missing the point. BTW, I have searched, found and watched a few videos on this subject (like 5 or 6) and none of them are as clear and as all encompassing as yours. Excellent video and I am a believer (subscriber) now.

    • @coolaj86

      "Dolphin Application" is ANY program that can run on the GameCube. The GameCube - and all accessories, games, etc - have the model number DOL-xxx because "DOLPHIN" was the code name given to the console by Nintendo before launch. The emulator stole the name much later because Nintendo never officially trademarked "Dolphin".

      I was under the impression that that _should_ work - at least Japan-US. However, I haven't tried it myself.
      All of the NTSC GameCubes have a one-wire switch that will flip them between regions, so if nothing else you can open it up and put a short jumper wire between the two pins and then, *magic*, it'll boot up in English rather than Japanese and suddenly be a USA-region GameCube.
      The UK GameCubes, however, have some different hardware.

    Personally I would have created the memory card myself using a hacked Wii. Those are a dime a dozen and you don't have to worry about keeping "spare" hacked GC memory cards around. If you need to make a new one just go to the trusty ol' Wii and make a new one.
    And to expand on that, you really want to go this gamecube route if you are specifically nostalgic with playing the games on the original console.
    Otherwise if you have a Wii already (which is a model that has GC controller and memory card ports) you might as well just uses Nintendont and run them this way. This is not emulation. Nintendont puts the Wii in GC mode to play these games.

    • @coolaj86

      The Wii doesn't have HDMI, whereas the GC does. But since this video there have been numerous advances in Homebrew and now it seems that the Wii U, which also has HDMI, is the best way to go.

    • @eightbit1975
      @eightbit1975 Рік тому

      @@coolaj86 Well, not really. The Wii U's video output in Wii and GC mode is pretty horrible. I have a Wii U and while the Wii U games look great of course, those other modes suffer and are even worse than a normal Wii. The Wii and GC both share the same component out port (if you had a GC that has it of course) and there are various Wii to HDMI adapters sold cheaply. There's also a hardware mod to add HDMI to the Wii which is phenomenal, but you need the skills to install it. Really a hacked Wii with component cables and a CRT TV (a Trinitron) is the best way to experience Wii and GC games as they were back in the day, but that is just my opinion of course.

I was about to put in the custom SDLoad codes (dozens of 12 digit codes) into action replay when I found this so I think you’ve saved me a lot of time ntm have shown me the right path xD

      @@coolaj86 I couldn't get it to work with what I had and, in investigating which memory card to buy and what not - I decided to just get a GC Loader :) Definitely not the cheapest route but hopefully it'll be headache free for someone as troubled as I've been with using SD cards with my gamecube :P (tbh I think my Xeno mod chip came undone but I haven't checked)

      Dude! C'mon man, I'm too old for this. I'm like a grandpa - except that my kids aren't even in school yet and I'm not even 40. Regardless, I don't know what all that stuff means. I mean, I played the GameCube when it WASN'T cool. Nard dog... lol...

    So wait after you unplugged the 8MB memory card do we need to do that EVERYTIME we want to play our GC? And if We need a fourth memory card? Your video doesn't show much about that. Please explain, thumbs down.

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  2 роки тому

      Telling someone "thumbs down" isn't a good way to engage someone to get your question answered.
      I don't know which part of the video that you're referring to, but you only need to remove the game card if you want to play the game for which you have a hacked save (I can't play Zelda with the Zelda hacked card).
      You can only have 2 memory cards plugged in at a time, but very few games require both cards.

      If you have a Wii with home brew menu i bet you could save the files you need to the GC memory card instead of buying one.
