Since Mr. Van Zant grew up in "Shantytown", Jacksonville, FL, he saw his share of poverty. Also at the time it was written (around 1971), the Vietnam War was still going on and he makes reference to that in the song as well. The original version, recorded at Muscle Shoals in Alabama had Mr. Medlocke on drums. The album it came out on, called "First and Last" came out in 1978 after Mr. Van Zant had died in the plane crash. His brother Johnny does an admirable job on this one.
Hi, I'd never heard this before tonight. Do you have any idea what the exact date and venue are? I just heard a version from 71, and now this. Pretty cool! They did a great job on this one!
One of my favorite Skynyrd songs of all time--this DESERVED to make a comeback and be performed live!
Glad they did this "live" its one of their greatests !
It's a very good rendition of the original recording. I naturally prefer the original, but Johnny makes a good effort on this.
Oh yeah!

Wow, one of my favorites, never heard it live before.
Shame Johnny mixed up the lyrics, lol.
Love this live! Classic!
Great!!! Why not include in setlist
Holy crap, never knew they ever did this live. New band or old.

Is there any video for this?
