    Yes I would agree, Tesla should absolutely reflect real world driving distance. But they don't because they like the idea of letting people believe that they have more range than the average electric vehicle for almost the same money.

      They should just be upfront with their numbers, it’s not like the Tesla community won’t figure it out.

    EPA range is indeed calculated based on driving 60% city - 40% highway with 60 mph max speeds.
    But EPA numbers have changed in the last years. It took about 100 years to get the EPA right for the ICEV.
    For the same two cars presented in the video, in 2024 :
    > EPA Tesla Model Y LR AWD : 308 miles
    > EPA Tesla Model Y Performance : 279 miles
    These last values reflect very well the reality of the real life driving (10% difference is not that much IMO, even my Ford Focus rated 32 mpg was doing 28 mpg in real life).

    I did a round trip to Yellowstone this summer on Model Y LR. My average for the whole trip of ~2500 miles was 258 Wh/ml. Probably 3/4 of this distance was highway driving. Chill mode only. On a highway I tried to stay most of the time below or at 70mph. Would have been even better if not for a very hot day on the way back which raised the avg from 253 to 258Wh/ml. My last 5k miles avg is 279Wh/m with mostly short distance city driving.

    • @sunchiadventures
      @sunchiadventures  9 місяців тому +1

      258 Wh/mi is actually pretty good considering it was mostly highway driving. Odd that your in town driving yielded higher Wh/mi. May I ask what type of driving habits were you doing in town during those 5k miles? Any heavy acceleration? Driving up hills? Heavy climate control use?

    • @ivanobulo
      @ivanobulo 9 місяців тому +1

      @sunchiadventures it is mostly short distance with a lot of stop and go. Longer trips avg can go into 240 wh/m territory, but the majority of short ones are 300-310. Also, it was really hot lately, so A/C might be to blame.

    The actual "real" range is about 20% less because you don't start at 100% load and drive to 0%. Normally you drive between 80-90% down to 10-20%...

    I don’t just take the kWh/ mile given from the Tesla screen. Because in real world you won’t even get the actual miles from your calculation.
    Simple math: if you drive 200 actual miles and energy consumed 254 miles the 200/254=78.74% (21.26% wasted) 😂

  • @herbfst
    @herbfst 4 місяці тому

    That number is BS in the car. My model 3 shows an average of 230-240wh/mi which is 10-15% less than what the wall charger shows. On top of that, the percentages provided by the car miss 15-30% depending on the trip. I'm not getting rid of them and will continue to buy Tesla but the numbers are BS.

      My MYLR gets 240-280 miles depending on weather and road conditions. I always turn on AC or heat and heated seat and steering wheel. But I’m not complaining. It happens to ICEs too.

    • @sunchiadventures
      @sunchiadventures  9 місяців тому +1

      More range is always nice to have. We definitely make more stops on road trips to charge in an EV than we do in our ICE. Sometimes it works out great and sometimes we just prefer to keep driving without needing to stop to charge. The Supercharger network is reliable and a huge factor on why we went electric, I can't imagine how terrible it is using the other charging stations.

    • @michaelandrew83
      @michaelandrew83 9 місяців тому +1

      @@michaelcollier8768I had a civic hx for years, I was part of an online hypermile club. I was able to achieve 60mpg in a regular gas car from the 90s that had an epa sticker mpg rating of 30/39mpg because I drove 55-60mph with draconian control limits on my acceleration and movements. You can achieve the tested range but not driving 70mph and zipping around. You need to drive with extreme mindfulness on efficiency. Of course that’s not “real world” driving, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

    • @michaelcollier8768
      @michaelcollier8768 9 місяців тому +1

      Right, then it is "Rocket Science" and not normal driving. The MY is a great car and this discussion is about "normal" driving range. There are times when I need the xtra range and go light on the pedal, heat, speed, etc. but that is not normal driving.
