My Grandfather; W.J. Wagner, always laughed out loud at the kitchen table at his house in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Whenever we would visit in the summertime while he was still alive in the early 1960’s. His laugh was boisterous and grandma would get mad at him because he would use the name ‘Squatch’ and she would correct him and say you must say Sasquatch and she would say some Indian name at him and I never understood it nor was it taught to me, what he talked about being on the San Juan River, below 4 corners with his fishing buddy ‘Flying’ after World War I and they were having a hell of a day his buddy was out of sight on a curve and all of a sudden he heard his buddy screaming to hell without his fly pole in hand behind him was a very, very dark Sasquatch very tall and roaring was running the water was up to grandpa‘s upper thigh and it was just up to upper calf on the Sasquatch so it’s much bigger and grandpa seizes the moment with his flypole in hand, he runs and gets in between the Sasquatch and his fishing buddy and grandpa‘s voice and discussion of which days of the week they could all participate in the plentiful of fish and not run into each other again with such commotion. He said they fish for many years after and if they ever lost a pole or tackle all he would need to do is mention it outloud and sure enough they get there the next week and it be leaning against the rock waiting for him so that’s what story I remember from my grandfather.
