Hi Durdam. I have heard many people advising against extending a cover letter beyond one page. But I find it nearly impossible to contain a cover letter for a post-doc within one page, especially when I am structuring it with my skills and experiences gathered over PhD, suiting it to the relevant listing for the position. There is just so much to explain. What is your take on it?

There must be an email mentioned for the application. This email is most likely belongs to the hosting professor. From there find out the name of the professor, google it, go to their lab page, see what has they published over the last couple years and see weather you understand those papers and find them interesting. If yes, write an email to the professor with your CV and explaining what you like about their work and you are interested to join their lab for your PhD project. That should get the ball rolling. What is meant by relevant experience? As i have done my Mphil. So definitely i did research on specific topic and wrote thesis . What kind of experience they want?

After 2 years it's not possible. You need at least 4 years last I checked. B1 german level, and you might need to take a small test about German lifestyle habits.

no ideally that should not be the case. the industrial experience is a huge deal maker. lack of publication isn't a deal breaker. you should continue be trying

IELTS is not mandatory. You should have a PhD degree and preferable 1st author publications and relevant experience for the position you are applying for. Your communication and presentation skills should be good as you would be working in a team and they would expect you to have these skills. Rest is pretty standard requirements. They are mentioned in the advertisement for which you are applying for.

If there is an advertised position on the official institute website, then give priority to that over emailing the professor. Emailing in that case won't create any conflict. It is just an additional impression that you make on the professors. It could go both ways but you don't need to email them if you are applying via the advertisement. Emailing the recruiters works when you are trying to get a position in a lab or a particular professor where there is no advertisement and you want to know if there is any prospect of positions. If the professor is interested in you, then they could help you to write a proposal for a grant application to obtain funding from let's say DAAD or some other funding associations.

Without the relevant research experience your chances to land a position is low as the competition is very high. So you would not have much content to write in your cover letter without any experience.
