I think it's nice that in this game you get to help the protagonist push the story forward. Leon and Ada deserve more acknowledgement as supporting cast.
If Kendal actually did survive the first wave of zombies he'd try and hold out in a bar or restaurant and most likely get overtaken by The horde being drawn by the shots from his shotgun.
