Great review! I am still using cheap trail runners but someday when I can expand my gear budget, Merrill’s are on the list!

Trail socks like darn tough and good shoes are key to getting higher miles comfortably. We currently are testing altra timp 1.5 which are decent but wont last near as long . The is a store called shoe department encore that sometimes has decent priced merrells there. Missy got womens waterproof mid tops for like 60 bucks might see if one in your area. I know one in Lancaster and Athens. They also make great every day shoes

These are such great shoes! I work in pediatric surgery & these are the shoes I wear in the operating room. I am on my feet for long hours & they are awesome. I guess i need to try them out on the trail! I use the Keen Targhee III on trail though! Great video Tony!

In places besides rei these can be had around 90 bucks so for the money and the way they hold up prob best shoes for money and very reasonable replacement insoles too

I suspect these are so good because they allow your foot to roll in naturally while still providing an arch support. That’s a 100% win for me because I’m an underpronator with a high arch. No need for orthotics with these.
Most footwear today is made the opposite (causing underpronating not correcting it) which can kill your knees. The typical lack of arch support causes plantar fasciitis. The Moabs are the best.
I’ve run two 10k mud runs and hiked all through the real BOGGY CREEK with mine. (No monster appeared) They still look and feel good enough to wear to work!

Great review really! Presently I am wearing water shoes for light hiking coz there are creek crossings in the hike too. I do have problems in rocky terrains coz the water shoes not sturdy enough.
How do you think if I use these moab 2 vent for my next trail with creek crossings? Will they drain fairly for one day trail? Thank you.

I literally bought this exact model/color today. I had originally gotten the alverstone and returned them because the heel and arch were too hard. I also find the heel in these to be a bit hard, but overall is a much more comfortable shoe.
Can you tell me if they break in after awhile? Did you notice the harder heel? and would you recommend a work style insole instead of the stock?

    • @WealthandTravelonaDime

Hi friend, yours is the non-waterproof version.
    1. Is the original version simply called MOAB 2?
    2. Is the original version waterproof?
    3. If answer to number two is yes, does it mean the original version cost more?

I have the MOAB 2 GTX Boot. Worst pair of hiking boots I have ever owned. Small, rubbing fit, grey part of the Vibram sole has worn smooth after 200 Miles, ride is way too firm, no shock absorption at all, Merrell lettering has fallen off on the Midsole, the inner heel lugs are way too hard and prominent and can be intrusively felt whilst walking, they're barely waterproof after 2 hours in damp conditions.
Almost forgot, the soles have very little grip in all conditions and have let me down/scared me many times where even my cheapest shoes just grip and carry on.
A massive disappointment. The only positive I have is that they fit like a glove from first use. , requiring zero break-in.

    • @WealthandTravelonaDime

It's important to look at where you bought them. I have had similar things happen buying them at discount locations. Shoe show discount shoe Mart etc. many of these companies have a repair department and they will buy discount shoe brands and do in-house repairs before they sell them. That said I've never owned the Moab 2 GTX boot. I personally only buy the original Moab 2. I'm also not a fan of the waterproof version. How they perform will definitely depend on where they're being used. I know runners or people that hike a lot of blacktop and concrete trails that say they wear them out in 250 mi. They're definitely made for dirt trails or as we use them daily use on homestead construction and trail use on East Coast . My experience is going to be different than yours but I end up having to change the insole before I can wear these out. But I may be using them in a different way than you are. And like the old saying there's always one bad one in the batch. You could have just gotten an extremely bad pair. Really sorry to hear you had such a bad experience.

Bit of a joke if you ask me.. these already aren’t in any way cheap.
They should have premium inner soles, stock.
Still didn’t stop me from buying it myself and that says bucketloads about the shoe.
My only issue with the shoe 👌
