Instead of oil use 2 sticks of butter (melted) Use 1 cup of milk instead of water and 5 eggs. I would crack the eggs in a separate bowl to make sure you don’t have a bad egg. Then pour the eggs into your ingredients. You can add 1 teaspoon of flavor extract.
use 1/2 cup of flour to the mix. It’s optional to add flour or not. Strawberry Jello 3 oz. pour it all into the box cake flour mix. Use a whisk to combine it together.
Before my grandma passed away, she made 1 cake all of the time and it was amazing. She was always asked to make it for all family functions and holidays and for her church dinners. She was always always making that one cake and it was always great. When I got older and moved away to attend college, I asked her exactly how she prepared it (everyone called it that sweet & sour cake) she gave me the recipe and I still make it from time to time but when she told me her recipe, I’d never eeever thought that she started her recipe for that cake with a box cake mix but she did. The one I make is definitely the recipe she used.
I also sometimes use box cake mixes and instead of the water I use milk , instead of the oil I use butter and I add the eggs, then Instead of jello I use pudding mix. Instead of baking on 350 I bake my cakes on 325. I get a lot of compliments. I’m sure ur cakes are very good and moist as well. 😊
I do the same, as well as sometimes adding eggs, depending on how many the recipe calls for. I also beat my eggs first, before adding them to the batter. This helps prevent over beating the batter in order to incorporate the eggs so that the cake will turn out light and fluffy. I melt my butter and combine with my beaten eggs, being certain that the butter has cooled somewhat first.
Just made 2 of these cakes in 2 days. Had not seen the strawberies included in the recipe list until I looked back at him making the cake. The first time, I added an extra egg, & 8 oz of sour cream, & the cake was good, but it didn't rise much. The 2nd cake, I just added the 3 eggs like the recipe said, 2 heaping tbls. of sour cream & 1/2 cup of strawberries, since he didn't say how much. This one was it! When I took the parchment paper off the pan to cool, I tasted some crumbs on it & it was to die for. I know this recipe was 6 yrs ago, but this is a keeper. Perfect.
If I have to use a cake mix. With a yellow cake mix, you add 1 to 2 tsp of vanilla extract and a box of pudding mix. With the chocolate cake mixes, you add 1 cup of coffee. Coffee will bring out the chocolate taste and it will be a lot more moist.
I rarely use box mixes, but when I do I'll use milk instead of water and butter instead of oil, flavor, flour and 4 eggs. Comes out perfect everytime. TFS!!
Omg can we just appreciate his video. I see people telling how he should do it better? Suggestion etc. This is his channel and this is the recipe his is showing us 🙁 I’m definitely making this 🥰
I do this also but I sub the water for buttermilk and I add 1/4 of sour cream. So yummy every time! Yes the jello or pudding mix makes a huge difference! ❤
I have a friendly suggestion. Instead of dividing the batter one spoonful at a time, weigh your filled cake pans on a scale. It’s accurate and saves a lot more time.
Thank you for the tip. Soon as butter goes on sale, I:m gonna stock up jus to make this cake. Does the milk have to be carnation or can I use another brand of canned milk? Thank for your response
Kind of toipc here, but if you will use Canned Milk in Mac n Cheese. It is anazing game changer. I also add extra cheese to Kraft man n chesse and everyone at church looses thier minds. Its always gone !!)
I have been eyeballing cakes for decades & they come out just fine. I dont have time for all that spoon scooping & pan rattling. I'm old. With that being said, young man I have searched the internet for weeks, for the perfect boxed strawberry cake & your's is the one. Thank you so much, my dear. No criticism, whatsoever. Keep doing what you do❤
I'm very sure this cake is great! Any boxed cake is 100% Better than grocery/bakery"bought cake" I never mix it with a mixer. Too much air gets added. So for me, it's by hand only. Milk or apple juice instead, many other liquids could substitute for water butter instead of oil Good organic/brown eggs You can add applesauce about 1/2 cup And not even taste it Just a Healthier version different fruits/nuts/sauces could be added, even baby food..like carrots for carrot cake. That's what I heard 😉 and it tasted wonderful Like foody sweets..not just junk sweets. Great Job sir. Good luck with your channel. 😀 Delicious!!
In my younger days I would make any kind of cake from “scratch”. Today because I don’t have the energy or desire to make a cake from scratch, I welcome your great suggestions. Thank you for sharing.
I just made this cake with my Sunday dinner and it came out so fluffy and yummy I never knew how to make a moist box cake until u showed me thank u so much🙌👏
Some use coffee when they are making any type of chocolate cake. They say it really gives it a deep, rich chocolate taste. Just thought to mention that since you mentioned chocolate cake.
Ommmgggg I made this cake yesterday 2/6/2022 it was amazing so moist absolutely perfect THANK YOU SO MUCH I made 1 adjustment I used 1/2 milk 1/2 water and a bunt cake pan it turned out perfect I will be trying your other recipes as well thanks again
I just made this mix with some frozen mixed berries that I blended and raspberry jello mix in a strawberry base. Used a blue (vanilla) butter cream with sprinkles and called it Unicorn Cake for the kid's birthday. Thanks for saving me!
I always substitute milk instead of water and for dairy free I use sweetened almond milk(I have a grandson who can't have dairy) and pudding. Thank you I never thought of of adding Jello I'll do that next time I make my grandson a cake 😁
Very nice. Your cakes are baked perfectly. I happen to have the same strawberry cake mix and I am trying your method. Thank you for your wonderful tips.
Me too! I bake Special occasion cakes as a hobby now but did it for about 8 yrs as a SAHM "side-hustle" when my kiddos were little. All else was as he described except I add an extra egg as well😍🎂

I have used box cake mix many times the devil food kind, and ice it with chocolate. because it's my son favorite. And I use the instant pudding. So moist.
A little tip for the red velvet cake box mix u mentioned,Add a box of Hershey white chocolate pudding mix. I been making this cake for all the holidays. My family always requests this one. Thanks for sharing
Strawberry shortcake... For German chocolate either use chocolate pudding and a coconut and pecan mix in the batter... or use nesquik in the batter and the same blend... It's my dad's favorite and that's how I get it super moist and tender.
So I tested this trick out with a white box cake yesterday, and I have to say that it was rather delicious. The goal was to make the white box cake taste more like a cheesecake, so I used a small box of cheesecake flavored Jello-pudding, an 8oz brick of cream cheese, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. The pudding will make the batter thick and the oil will have the batter sliding cleanly out of the bowl. I baked it in a 13"x9" Pyrex dish that was buttered and floured as shown in the video, so once the cake was allowed to cool a little...it came out of the pan...a little too easily, lol. I wasn't ready xD! Let me tell you that this cake was soft, moist, and delicious, but it's a touch too sweet for me and it doesn't taste like cheesecake, sadly. I'm now wondering two things: 1. If you use a sugar-free pudding, will the cake be as sweet as it would be with a normal box pudding? 2. If you use a normal box pudding and mix it with cake flour instead of a box cake mix, will you need any sweetener?
Cake mix now is awful. Most of it is made in China, years ago when they reduced the box sizes, they also changed the formulas. They added more leavening to get the same volume of cake out of less mix. When you open a box, it doesn't even smell like it used to. I've complained to every company, it doesn't matter what the customer wants anymore, it's just greed. Now I would have been happy to pay more to keep size and formula the same, but they're gone and not coming back.
@cherrytop961 It is now 2024, & box cakes are still awful, but they're the starting point for great cakes after adding other ingredients, even you don't want to make a time consuming scratch cake all the time. Look through UA-cam & find you a box cake to experiment with
Thanks for sharing!😉👍 I do the same thing when I use boxed cake mixes. But instead of water I use buttermilk and sometimes I substitute butter for the oil. For some mixes I use instant pudding instead of jello mix.
Love this! Cake mixes have changed so much over the years, so I wasn't sure if the old tricks would still work. I love this combination and hope to try it.
I followed this recipe last night and my cake was soooooo 🔥 i also tried the recipe for the crumble.( i messed it up big time but ima try again!) Thank u so much for this... you’ve gained a new subscriber!!!
I use a lemon box cake to make a bundt cake, with lemon pudding 3/4 water, OR jello mix with 1 cup boiling water mixed with it & cooled, then add to other ingredients. 4 eggs, 1 cup of oil & the zest of 1 lemon. Save the juice to add to the lemon glaze on the cake. My 7 y/o grandson's favorite. You know it's special, cause I love my grandson. ❤
Have you tried "goop" as the cake release instead of the sprays or "old fashion" way. It's equal parts oil, shortening, and flour.. 1c. flour 1c. oil 1 c. shortening This stuff is GREAT!! Saves time trying to oil and shake flour all over the pan..and can make as much as needed for cheap.
Sandra Walston I switched from lining my cake pans with parchment paper to using “goop” for coating my cake pans and it’s the best!!! I couldn’t believe it!
I know this must be your personal recipe, but if you’re trying to make a box cake close to homemade, water isn’t it add whole milk or buttermilk. Even so, I personally use buttermilk. Btw, I’m from Memphis. 🤩 Good luck on the growth of your channel. 👍
That Techy Chick , yes you sure can freeze buttermilk in an airtight container but you have to leave a little space at the top, as buttermilk will expand when frozen, when you’re ready to use it again just let it thaw in refrigerator. It will last for about 3 months.
@jessc76, sure you can, you can substitute any plant milk such as almond milk for buttermilk. You will use the same amount the recipe calls for but use unsweetened almond milk. What you have to do is stir in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar per cup of plant milk. Let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes, then use it in place of buttermilk. The almond milk won't be as thick, but the acid helps replicate the flavor of buttermilk.
i agree with him.... he knows what he is saying.. i have done the same with chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla cakes with pudding/jello mix..... and turned out pretty pretty good! good video... i like i likkkkkkkkkkeee
I measure the mix cup by cup. Normally its 2 and 1/4 to each pan. I also use milk instead of water and butter besides oil and also add 1 pudding mix and 1 extra egg. I'm going to try the jello to my next strawberry cake to see the difference
I've made this several times and let me just say, it tastes AMAZING. My man will eat the ENTIRE cake within a couple days I kid you not lbs 🤣 I usually have to cook mine a few extra minutes because I put quite a few strawberries in my mix so it's a bit wetter. Ive makes this cake several times and the strawberry cream cheese frostin. Its a hit with my family. I also have watches your story. Very heart felt. I shared it with my son as well. Keep posting.
Same recipe I use for my box cake, not tryin to take away from the video, but I use a pinch of baking powder. I separate the egg yolk from the white. I beat the white and slowly fold it in the cake mixture. Your cake will be so moist and fluffy.
If u lack ingredients, use a can of cream soda mixed with the strawberry cake mix and bake as directed. U can do it with all the different flavors and it comes out good
Try heavy cream, butter milk or whole milk and instead of oil use butter and throw in an extra egg. Keep the butter ratio the same as recommended. That'll give you a super rich, very moist cake. I add extra flour too.
It works instead of strawberries I added some juice, i also changed the pillsbury frosting by adding a package of cream cheese and a can of sweetened condensed milk
I have never used jello/pudding mix, I don't use the direction at the top of the box I use the direction in the middle of the box were you use unsweetened apple sauce instead of oil, but I like to try new thing when it comes to baking and instead of sprays and oil and flour I use that paper lining, can't wait for your next video.
Freezing a cake helps, too. Bake and ice a cake as though you were about to slice it and serve it. Instead, cover it with Saran Wrap and an outer layer of Reynolds Wrap and freeze. Give it a half-day to thaw once it’s out of the freezer. The moisture will have been locked in.
I'm coming to live with you. Do you bake any other types of desserts? I'm thinking of starting my own business making different types of cheesecake desserts and need some tips. Thanks again for sharing.
I’m gonna try this method but I’m making layered cupcakes with ur strawberry and add red velvet. I’m gonna put chocolate pudding and coffe in the batter for the RV, I hope it comes out good thx for the inspo!!!
I bake bundt cakes w all flavors & melt white choc on top after its baked or a choc ganache dribble w mini choc chips & crushed nuts. They all love it. Bundt cakes are so easy
In my opinion, instant pudding mix is SO much better than Jello mix. In the end it comes down to preference, I have tried both in cakes and pudding cake always wins when I bake for others 😊
So I made this as is, without substitution and it was wonderful. I actually hate strawberry cake but this one is actually good. Ty so much for this recipe.
Instead of oil use 2 sticks of butter (melted)
Use 1 cup of milk instead of water and 5 eggs.
I would crack the eggs in a separate bowl to make sure you don’t have a bad egg. Then pour the eggs into your ingredients.
You can add 1 teaspoon of flavor extract.
This is what I do and it's soooo good!
Yes it is 😁🙂
Do you still add the flour?
No I use strawberry jello and mix it with the cake box flour.
I don’t see it being a problem adding flour to it.
use 1/2 cup of flour to the mix. It’s optional to add flour or not.
Strawberry Jello 3 oz. pour it all into the box cake flour mix. Use a whisk to combine it together.

I did mine the same way for years and years😋
Exactly how I do.. I add an extra egg..if if calls for 2 I use 3..
How much butter?

AmyIsHere that sounds yummy!!! I’m going to try this
Yes I herd the sour cream is good. It DEFINITELY adds to a 7up cake
Y buttermilk and sour cream
If it's a chocolate cake, forget the sour cream and use mayonnaise
I have a friendly suggestion. Instead of dividing the batter one spoonful at a time, weigh your filled cake pans on a scale. It’s accurate and saves a lot more time.
I do that👌
Absolutly ! Weighing my pans after filling is a lifesaver!
Katrina Floyd-Gonzales Great tip! I gotta remember that, thank you.
Thanks for the tip
Why weight your cake pans?
use carnation milk and sweet salted butter instead if water and oil. The texture and consistency will be rich!

Heavy shipping cream or buttermilk

Addition to adding milk I use butter and strawberry extract about 1 teaspoons
Thanks for sharing, this cake looks really delicious.
Now I want cake.
There is a red velvet pudding mix at food lion. I have purchased it before
Really never seen one
I am Philishia ugh! I used it all the time but it got discontinued. Now I just use a little chocolate pudding and some vanilla extract
Wow! I never seen that! I’m in mass tho and we don’t have Food Lion. But I’m going to look on amazon lol! Thanks
I love the way you doing everything I will try it thank you.!!!
Red velvet pudding is now being sold in stores and online. And its yummy in the cake mix.
Sub the water for strawberry milk too!🍓 🤩😍 love the vid! I would have never thought to add the gelatin! Can’t wait to try this!
Can’t wait to try this recipe out looks amazing. Thank you
If u lack ingredients, use a can of cream soda mixed with the strawberry cake mix and bake as directed. U can do it with all the different flavors and it comes out good
Strawberry cake with Cheese cake in the middle with cream cheese frosting and Strawberry crumbs topping
Thank you so much for sharing your tips !!!! I made the crumbles today !!!! I think you’re going to frost it really delicious and pretty !!!
Try heavy cream, butter milk or whole milk and instead of oil use butter and throw in an extra egg. Keep the butter ratio the same as recommended. That'll give you a super rich, very moist cake. I add extra flour too.
Love watching you you're so passionate about what you are doing my son loves cooking also and tapping
I will be making this in a few days. I found his cream cheese frosting. Can't wait to try it
It works instead of strawberries I added some juice, i also changed the pillsbury frosting by adding a package of cream cheese and a can of sweetened condensed milk
This is the absolute best strawberry cake! I always have people asking for it. Thank you for the recipe!
Thanks for the tip. I loke your video. God bless you. Keep teaching us more about cakes.
Ole skool secret🕵....big tablespoon of mayo...makes cake come out super moist💎💞
I think your going to make cake pops.Looks yummy......901
By the way I made this cake for a coworker she loved it. It was delicious thank you for this recipe.
I would've never thought to use Jello! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. Great video
This recipe worked GREAT! Thank you it was very tasty!
This is just a basic recipe.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Soooo much for your recipe!!!! God Bless!🙏💙
Your so Jello is definitely a must!!! I also use buttermilk instead of water! Soooooo yummy!!!
Looks good! We use milk instead of water. Makes it moist too.
Made this for my boyfriend and he Loved it. Thanks!
I’m definitely an eye baller and probably gonna be for life 🤣🤣🤦🏾♀️🤷🏽♀️
I would add whipping cream instead of water.
YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to make it. I bet it's delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!
Strawberry crumb cake oh so yummy !
I adore your videos - they are so real. I've used pudding and Jell-O for years, and I'm happy to see you are showing it to others :) Well done :)
I think I love you!!!..... And your recipes ☺️
❤
I bake bundt cakes w all flavors & melt white choc on top after its baked or a choc ganache dribble w mini choc chips & crushed nuts. They all love it. Bundt cakes are so easy
I do too. I bake the box cake mix in a bundt pan.
I took the white cake mix & made fresh Strawberry Purée & added it to it plus slices of strawberries too✨✨🔥🔥
Hmm I've never tried Jello but I'm definitely gonna try this,I usually use preserves for mine.
In my opinion, instant pudding mix is SO much better than Jello mix. In the end it comes down to preference, I have tried both in cakes and pudding cake always wins when I bake for others 😊
will try this am. bake off w/ Old School's from scratch..
So I made this as is, without substitution and it was wonderful. I actually hate strawberry cake but this one is actually good. Ty so much for this recipe.
Box cake mix is delicious.
Love these tips! The tapping of everything you put in drives me crazy lol 😅
