  • During the Second World War there were numerous experiments and prototypes created to make advances and gain a military advantage over the enemy. Some were very strange and out there. One such experiment involved the use of a low flying aircraft two poles and a man. In today's video we look at the World War Two ground to air retrieval method used to rescue stranded men.
At Premier History we want to take you on a journey through time and grow your knowledge to see what it was actually like to be in some of the pivotal points in World History.

Had you ever heard of this type of extraction? Were you aware that it was first tested in the Second World War?

I seen it in a Batman movie, Dark Night I believe. The one with Heath Ledger as the Joker. Morgan Freeman called it Skyhook also, Batman uses it to snatch up a Snitch in China. Great movie, one of my favorites.

Morning. My uncle a WW2 RAF pilot with two Tours under his belt flew man retrieval flights from A.F.E.E. Beaulieu on 24th and. 25/3/47 on Dakota FD 943. Comments on 25th "Man Retrieval - Lives".

I was aware of a somewhat similar system to pluck an entire glider up into the air, but I think it was really rough on the glider and they didn't use it very much.

The USAF used something similar with a C-130, a balloon and whiskers on the nose of the aircraft to catch the line from balloon to the passenger. I saw it used several times before the USAF eliminated the system. Very interesting to watch.
