    My response is coming in a video, but I originally started keeping them as a cleanup crew...and then became increasingly fascinated with their colors, patterns, and habits...Thanks for the shout-out! It was fun to see my own clips in this video!

    I originally started with isopods after watching some of the videos on the aquarimax channel. I needed a cleanup crew for my frog tank and now I keep a few cultures of species I dont use as cleanup crews. Awesome vid for anyone starting in the hobby!

    Great video Wally - the more people that keep them, the better. One of my favourite reasons for keeping them is creating new morphs. Great fun and doesn't take forever.

      Yes! When working with geckos, it could year a 3-5 year process.

    I started raising isopods recently! I have 2 healthy cultures of isopods and springtails. I have powder orange and dairy cow. I came to your channel to see about adding mushrooms to the habitat because I noticed how much they love the dried ones.

    Great video again! Covered all bases for good reasons to keep them. I may have to make a video talking about why I started keeping them. Maybe my viewers would want to see that since my obsession happened so quickly haha.

    It’s weird, I got into stick bugs recently and saw on one of the sites that they had isopods for sale. I thought the idea of keeping pet isopods was ridiculous. As a kid I loved amphibians and reptiles but had zero interest in isopods when I would find them in the back yard under logs while I was finding terrestrial salamanders. I don’t know why but I’m obsessed with them now, so many cool ones out there.

      You and I are in the same place. I use to go down to the creek and catch tadpoles and crayfish. Isos all over the place and we would not think twice about them.

      Other than some dwarf whites, I've only started keeping isopods since about Sept or Oct last year. I think they are fascinating.

    Nice video! These little crustaceans are just so captivating. I’m new to the hobby with just a few species-I’m partial to the genus Porcellio. No doubt a good cleanup crew, but isopods hold their own as a vivarium animal. I liken them to nano shrimp which are hugely popular in the aquarium hobby. And wow those high yellow ornatus are stunning!!

    • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  4 роки тому

      I completely agree on your comparison to the shrimp. Both with fascinating behaviors and such a variety. Yes, the Porcellio ornatus High Yellows are my favorites too.

    Newbie question here...Are the isopods you’re showing in the various still photos, naturally occurring variations/species/sub-species or are they selectively bred color morphs? Hope my question makes sense 🤗

    • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  4 роки тому

      Great question! Most are found in nature. If you see a name with an addition to the genus/species name, then it is a morph (pattern/color). Some of these occur in nature but most have been developed in the hobby.

    Would love to have isopods, but my family doesn't see them as pets. My father would say "what does an isopod do? You can't take them for a walk, you can't play fetch with them. You can't do nothing with them." To my family a pet has to have four legs and fur to be a pet.

    • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  11 місяців тому

      Isn't that the same with many reptiles too? :) I love how you can have a slice of nature in a simple 6 or 12 qt container.

    If they are edible, than that can be another reason to keep them: a cheap source of protein. It seems they eat just wood and leaves, so it seems easy to farm them. Well I am not a fan of eating bugs but it can help us during "The next catastrophe (and how to survive it)", right?

    • @SupremeGecko

    Isopods as clean up crew and as a feeder would be great as the population would be kept in check, just wondering what the nutrition values would be and particularly what chitin content they have.

      Supreme Gecko yeah. I didn’t have much time for outside of lab activities and didn’t have any pets. Lived in a small apartment close to the Capital. Now I own my own house and am a professional research chemist for a Fortune 500 company. Things are much better - and I have geckos! I always had pets as a kid and caught wild animals and such... glad I’m reconnecting with it...

      Supreme Gecko they are amazing little critters! I love how curious they are.
      We had a huge prayer tree that we climbed in as a kid & in the center of the tree we found a bunch of them in the leaves & I loved climbing our tree as a kid & watching them. Picking them up & playing with them. Now 40 years later I have 9 different isopods I found my first colony at a reptile store I go to & then I found rolypoly ranch & ordered a bunch from him.
      I love watching them grow. I’m still learning & still fascinated by them.

      Pets! (I’m also “The Little Things Kate”) My son has collected them literally since he could crawl. Every year, I’d provide him with containers and he would fill them up. I didn’t know anything about them until this last fall, when I decided to start some colonies to give to him for Christmas. We are all hooked now, and we keep a pill bug zoo.

      Originally as a vivarium janitor,but now as an additional pet, they can be kept in smaller vivariums,and though i haven’t witnessed it, could be an additional food source for small herps, they are similar size ratio ( 1/4”-1/2” )to feeder baby dubia roaches which are a healthy staple, for example : I think my eurydactylode “Juno” ate some of them because for some time after I got him I noticed the isopods were scarce, but I havent seen it,lol.
