The birthplace of mountain biking has had a rough go trying to get singletrack approved for mountain bike use. Ponti Ridge is one of very few wins cyclists have been able to get, albeit this is NOT a bike-specific trail. But we have to start somewhere! Ponti Ridge has been on my radar for a while now, it's time to go check it out!

Bay Area riding in a nutshell; ride during off peak times, climb near vertical fire roads/doubletrack, take in the spectacular views, perform a death defying descent on hard-packed hiking/cow trails that don’t flow, say to yourself, ‘Well, at least the view was worth it! I’ll never ride that again…’, then get stuck in hellish traffic on the way home because you failed to factor that in…
Love what you’re doing Brian! Hope to ride with you up at Everstoke sometime 🤙🏻
So true
Sooo true
Every. Single. Time
Have to just ride Pacifica or Santa Cruz on repeat, and then hit traffic when you leave
@@tylerhorgan4651 don't forget about china camp. plenty of gems there
I grew up in Novato hiking and riding horses all over what used to be open space. I love rediscovering the trails on my EMTB. The fight between equestrians, hikers and bikers has been never ending. We are always doing trail maintenance on our rides: bucking up downed trees, picking up trash-much of it dog poop bags. We are members of Redwood Trail Alliance a fabulous group of trail users and advocates who educate, build and maintain trails. There should be harmony and respect among all who use the trails...
loose rocks are really what gets everyone. amazed how you did a dismount gracefully on that one and glad you ended up without a scratch. keep safe brian!
I have a suggestion!! Would it be interesting to have some statistics along the video, like km/h, heart rate and total distance!
Keep it up with the good work!
From Portugal 🇵🇹
problem is with GoPro they made is super hard to have that information
Hi Ghislaine, Jonathan writing from Malta. What is the reason for this? Would certainly help monitor physiological parameters. What do you think.
Come join us at Tamarancho Brian! We'd love to get your take on how it's changed over the years since your last visit!
Thanks for the shout out to MCBC! Reach out next time you’re in town.
I think the first trail looked like a lot of fun. I would love to have that one. Almost all ll I have around me is chunky hand cut hiking trails.
I was like your uncle back in the mid 80's with the heavy steel mtb climbingvtrails in Colorado. Used to be a hiker then decided riding was a better way to enjoy the trails. Now living in Martinez, Ca and getting back into it after a 15 year hiatus. Thanks for the ideas on where to ride and keep the videos comin!!
Good to see you out there Brian. You’re right about Ponti. They tried to make it flow but it really isn’t as there are trail features where you have to check your speed. You would’ve loved the original Ponti though before it was removed to build the new trail. We were riding it in the late 1990’s on hardtails like Yokota Yosemites, Rockhoppers, and WTB Phoenix’s. It was enduro before enduro was a thing. Even some riders with full suspension would be hard pressed to clean it back then. Fast, tight, steep, off camber, and loose. It was only ridden by those in the know and willing to earn their trail cred. by pedaling up Chicken Shack to access it. Still, I can’t complain much having a trail I can access the ridge with right out my front door. Thanks for checking it out and I might suggest Solstice and Tamarancho in the future.
That downhill looked to me like it was specifically designed to keep people’s speed in check.
Is solstice open?
@@tuftschristopher I haven’t checked the status of it lately. I tend to ride it more in the summer when school is out. Last I checked a few months back there was no “closed” signage from 680.
@@tuftschristopher Yes it is.
@@tuftschristopher Just checked in with a friend today and it’s open.
As a new mountain biker I really appreciate your work. I am 50 years old but grew up in BMX and road racing. Im learning a lot, thank you!
So good to see you out on the trails. The last trail was fantastic, riding down towards the sea, granting an amazing view. WOW. Thanks
I do hope the user groups can coexist. The SC and other hiker groups are excellent at mobilizing and securing sole access.
Coastal got super rutted with the big storms we had. Still fun though
You're so lucky to have those awesome trails with the beautiful scenery
Oh my, what a beautiful day and how many incredible views.
I hope this doesn't come off too negative, but it's amazing how bad the trails are in the birthplace, or nearby, of mountain biking. I've ridden a fair amount around the Bay area and, although there are really great sections, like Braille, as a whole the trails aren't that great, aren't that plentiful, and lots are "illegal". Utah trails, southern and northern, are worlds better aside from having winter months where they aren't rideable in the north. There are hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails, maybe thousands.
One of life's many ironies or paradoxes.
It's a matter of population density in Marin and other California locations. In Utah you have the benefit of so much more open space. In Marin and elsewhere, you have too many people using too little space.
Love it Brian! Awesome to see you riding some of my local spots.
Chicken shack fire road up to Ponti starts just off the right where you parked. So cool to see you riding my hood!
I live in Marin county and Ponti is one is my all time favs
Crazy to see my local trails on this huge channel 🍿🍿 Looked like all time weather too!
Apparently the Ponti Point trail is quite literally right behind my parents' house where I grew up. I used to take my BMX bike up that hill and we still watch Fourth of July fireworks from some of those vista points. I never knew it had MTB trails though. I'll have to check it out now.
I'm really enjoying all these California trails you are going on. Living in Redding now, I have a lot to choose from but it is nice to see what else is available so when summer hits I am not stuck ridding in the 100 degree + weather.
I bought my first mountain bike in 1979 and you are riding where I lived then. That was known as The Big rock ridge road climbing to 1887' . In the beginning we would ride ALL the trails and fire roads in Marin, then soon the hikers and horses won, No single track and fire roads with 15 mph limit.
Love the videos! Keep it up.. Your channel has given me motivation to get out on the bike and explore, Thank you
Love the mantra. I tell myself something similar to get me going during long climbs. Gotta earn the fun part by working through the tough parts
Great vid and agreed on advocacy and volunteering out here in the Bay Area for mtb trails. It really can make a huge difference. Briones is another place where they are piloting some trail usage which is a step in the right direction making some of the previous unsanctioned trails bike legal. Good thinking on riding coastal in the early am or late pm then hitting Stinson for some ocean cooldown! ✌🏼
Hi from the UK, keep shredding 👍🏻
Yep, leaving a transistor radio playing in your van really is a good way to discourage break-ins. I do it all the time with my camper-van.
Even the most brazen thief doesn't want to smash a window on a van they can't see into. They have no idea what's waiting for them inside.
Love a good Uncle Dennis story. Thank god that cardio demon introduced his nephew to mountain biking. 454,000 of us awe him a big thank you. Wouldn’t it be great if someday somebody’s telling a story of how Uncle Brian, AKA BKXC, got them into mountain biking?
Ha! Made a Crested Butte as the birth place of mtb joke just before you mentioned it that’s good stuff.
Right to roam has been so successful here for basically everyone. More access, more tourists, better economy.
Brian I used live there…Tamarancho to Pine Mountain (park in Fairfax) - used to be my favorite ride!
Hi from the Portugal, keep shredding 👍
Very pretty scenery!
If I was that guy that recognized you, I would’ve turned around and chased you for a damn sticker or a picture 😂
Loved the video! Just moved to SF so I've got a lot of trails both good and bad to check out haha
One of my favorite trails! Im from Novato.
XC makes BK happy again! 😁
Not sure how you miss the best legal single track like Tamo, Solstice, China Camp, Hobo, and so much more. Ponti and Coastal are green trails for sure so sounds like you need another trip with a guide in the know!
I guess I'm strange but in one of my local parks, there was an old stripped Porsche 914 with no interior or doors. The trail ran right through it and it was a fun little diversion. Our group was disappointed when the powers that be removed it.
Great trail! Hikers must hate mountain bikes blasting down this; especially with no trail bell. No wonder why you were mentioning being afraid 9f confrontations on this trail.
You're always very polite when you pass another on the trail as it should be! Ever tempted to say this though, "Tis I BKXC, move aside Pilgrim!
such a wholesome channel
Oh, that view! Bay Area in February!
BKXC always makes treadmill time easier .
Quick, go visit AZ before winter's over! I'm hearing good things about the Hawes network of trails.
Nice ocean view. This must be where they say the earth is flat.
Might not be in your rotation, but I like it. More my speed. Thanks for sharing.
If you ever make a frame with Trail One you really should think about calling it the Uncle Dennis 🤙
Wow 😮 awesome trails very cool 👍😎🤘
Coastal trail looks incredible, except for the ruts that look like they want to grab your wheel and send you flying.
Killer views. Thanks!
I hiked some fun trails near Rancho Oso RV Campground in santa barbara
It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Love the video Brian!!!
Good Save.👍
Fruit by the foot! It's probably been 30 years since I've had one of those.
I’ve done that ride where you missed your turn. Come up from Ross to top of tam. It’s like 8-9 miles all up hill 😅
Nice ride. Man, you need to go ride in Ecuador ! The Andes mountains are insane. I was there last summer. You can downhill for hours. Cotopaxi volcano is amazing place too. Peru is awesome too though I didnt bike there. Haku expeditions does guided rides in both places.
I gotta say, I haven't heard you say "Pain and pleasure" in quite a while.
Cool trail and Nature
The headwind comment he made reminded me of the time I rode in some headwind and it absolutely kills you
I do this trail a least once a week if not more I called my back patio.
i love this ride
Dismount at 18:00
Is the medium Ripmo a significant improvement or are there some things you like more about the large?
What camera do you use for your intros? I’ve always been impressed with the quality.
Wait… I’ve seen this one before. Oh well 🍿👀
Tamarancho is pretty sick also...
Nice brother
BK you should have hit the Tender Puss trail, you were so close.
Can you do stairs ride
Go do tamorancho!
Hey Brian been watching your videos and love them. Glad you made it onto the Ponte Ridge Trail. I live in Marin and been riding it since before it was made. Check out some videos I made of the trail and also a couple other rides in the area that you probably have done. Spent time with the new editing program and music and effects. Let me know what you think. My channel is droworld now.
I don’t mind sharing trails with bikers, I just get mad when bikers don’t give hikers a heads up when they approach them from behind !
I always wonder exactly how fast Brian gets going on these downhill flow trails. Wow!
There’s another commenter right before/after you that also suggested he show distance traveled, speed, heart rate, and other stats. I also wonder sometimes how quick he gets going! Has me clenching up on my sofa 😂😂😂
Ponti is ok, it's really a slog climb for not a lot of payoff. Sometimes I ride chicken shack fire road to get to the top, and it's a beast of a climb. I should ride Ponti up and the little single track, off to the side, down chicken shack. The fire roads up there are just steep and gnarly though. Ponti is fast in sections... but it doesn't really sustain. It's like a trail you can take your kids on, except it is too steep.
Brian, you should go ride in tilden or joaquin miller, super fun. And i agree with you, as one of the members of the wildcat composite mtb club ( club for middle schoolers in the east bay) its often hard to get fun trails to ride, especially after riding them over and over again, but im hopeful that with time more and more stuff will open up. apparently there's a new flow trail being put in at wildcat canyon. love what your doing.
Know of any mtb club races in the Bay Area for 7yo? (I know there are bmx club races).
(My kids love trail riding at JMP. The chunkier the better!)
@@AliasHSW There are a bunch of total body fitness and norcal events, that would be pretty cool. not quite sure if you need to be in the club to join. But those are some of the ones that stand out it seems.
@@italianpizza9794 - can you drop some names that I can I look up? Thanks.
@@AliasHSW you mean like clubs? or the actual races
@@italianpizza9794 - clubs and or races. Just about any leads that you dispense for me to scour the internet would be perfect.
Gloves are the helmets of the hands...use them!
We want to be volunteer at our open space lime ridge in walnut creek but they only close our trails .. so sad ..
My old stomping grounds. After you left West Point, umm dude, you’re going the wrong way. 😂. May not be the most technical trails but a different type of fun and you cannot beat the scenery. Get out there on a foggy day for a different experience.
You need a Trail1 part named after Uncle Dennis...
This guy bikes fast.
Need an xc bike for this trail, super pretty.
Hey Brian!
I hope you are well. I've been a long time subscriber to your YT channel and FINALLY I am coming to San Fran end June for two weeks. I will be staying around the San Rafael area and wondered if you could recommend a shop that has good MTB rentals... I'm trying to decide whether to bring my Megatower or rent...
Thank you in advance Brian!
S
Never used any but I looked into rentals for my cousin a while ago. Fairfax has a couple shops which is only 10-15 minutes west of San Rafael and is where Camp Tamarancho is (mentioned in this video). There’s also a Bay Area chain called Sports Basement which probably has less options but pricing is cheaper. They’re in SF, Marin, and Sonoma Counties. Good luck!
@@angeloco5111 awesome thank you for the info buddy! Much appreciated!
@@dugmtb9226 yeah no problem at all man! Enjoy your time out here.
Is that red magnet a Pinhoti trail magnet around 9:45?
How do you make big climbs easier? Make even bigger climbs. My mantra.
Famous last words 😁
Lols 2:00 = Didn't you just chuck the sticks onto the parallel trail?🤔🤣
hey brian, what are your suspension settings? Are you running what Ibis recommends? I'm finding that their recommendations are quite different from the norm and would like some advice!
When is the Pacifica The Mile trail coming? :-)
thanks for sharing, I wanna ask..how you setup camera? 😳
one my buddys has a van with tons of gear and whe he leaves alone he install water prooff motorycle alarms on every entry soon the touch a door or the van will make supoer loaud alarm keep anyone away and btw i fucking love your channel
California is crazy about restricting mtb in general! In the entire East Bay there is only one decent single track circuit. Any other single track is short and jammed between fire roads. Very lame.. Marin is the best nearby and it, as you mentioned, is also very limited. Sad and bewildering state of affairs!
Join BTCEB and help in their advocacy efforts! We all need to support this and lend our voices to the cause.
I has a 2019 Marin San Quentin 2
No Northside bruh?
liked subd, love ur videos
Another 'find your limit' video on the cards soon eh?
From a local: the ebike rangers are to chase after us mountain bikers that ride the illegal trails
