Kenshi Training Tutorial Pt1, Money Money Money, Thieving, Sneaking, Lockpicking and Assassinations

- *IMPORTANT I say I start as "The nobodies" but I actually picked "The Freedom Seekers" make sure you pick the freedom seekers.
Fair warning we exploit the game mechanics like crazy and this is pretty much cheating in many respects.
To train fast you need to acquire a variety of tools, blueprints and equipment. The difficulty is in getting your hands on those tools early in the game, the easiest thing to acquire is money. Using Money you can give yourself several advantages. This video covers how you can power level skills that are very useful for taking shortcuts in this game. Namely Thieving, Sneaking, Lockpicking and Assassinations. All you need is an enemy Ninja with a busted leg.

To be fair, if I saw a bull trying to sneakily walk through my store of electronics I would probably keep staring at the bull too.
In my head, I imagined the bull being animated and anthropomorphic drawn in the style of Ren and Stimpy
😊
😊😊😊😊
😊
😊
The fact that you kidnapped and stripped a cripple to train skills on a "helpless" target, only to be forced to retreat when he started fighting back is why I love Kenshi.
You hear stories of people who keep prisoners around to let out and beat up, only for the prisoner to eventually get tough enough to beat up the players team and just escape.
@@FrancisJohnYT yeah the xp they gain is also nice causes a back and forth, I usually end up killing them before that thpugh, after a trainee gains up to 50 in a combat skill I "initiate" them by making them kill their first target, that beimg the training "dummy"
@@comatose1818 hardcore stuff man. I like to use some sort of recruiting mod, usually the lore friendly one but recruit anyone if I'm feeling like an unbalanced playthrough. Then you recruit the training dummy after you're done with them and send them out into the wastes to prove themselves. This can honestly lead to some really interesting stories, especially when you see your former training dummy again in a slavemonger caravan.
Old comment but if they can defeat my guy, I let them go.
If I like them, I'll let them fight me last in the rotation to give them the best chance to win.
...I have to admit, I never realized you could ally with the Gutters. You have taught me something wonderfully broken today, FJ, and I will immediately indulge in it.
In theory you could do the same thing with Bugmaster to become allied with the spiders as well, though it would cost a hell of a lot more as slaves are valued on there stats.
It’s also a way to Recruit Skeletons without mods. Drop ‘m down near a slaver, make HIM the bad guy. Then “free ” him and feel good about yourself. Works 40% all of the time!
Ironically, starting as a slave is also a good way to train up efficiently. You can do all the above exploits, but if you get caught, they will beat you up (toughness and combat training), lock you, and heal you up. The feed you just enough to not die, so you always have a malnutrition malus. Which, ironically again, is a good thing. The debuff to stats makes them level faster. It's absolutely free and also, relatively risk-free.
Oh we have some tricks we can break out to level up combat stats and toughness, I just wanted to ally with the beak things early so we could open up the map.
@@FrancisJohnYT - Fun fact - the beak things in earlier versions of Kenshi could talk. One of the things they said was "Relax. Enjoy death."
@@ahmataevo i would run like hell when a monster like that exist
@@ahmataevo lol why did they take that out thats funny
Agreed, the slave start in Rebirth with the two characters is the best start in the game by far - spend every day running around fighting guards and every night sneaking around stealing and knocking out guards, you level so fast no exploits are required - by the end fo the second in-game week, you're stronger than most of the guards (all stats in the high 50's-low 60's) and have enough athletics to simply run right out the gate past them if you want...but also high enough martial arts skill from all the unarmed fighting to beat the shit out of every guard in the camp LOL. Personally I like to knock a few of em out and throw them in their own cages at night....their friends let them out in the morning, put shackles on them, and treat them like every other prisoner LMAO after a few days, most of the slaves are former paladins, and you can free all the other slaves.
When you are allied with Gutters, you can pickup a beak-thing. Now imagine everyone of your party is carrying one.
I tried doing that but could not pick one up, I was hoping to carry a few into some towns.
@@FrancisJohnYT thats strange. Maybe it was in sneak or non-sneak? I could do it immediately. Just walking up to one, long right-click, pick up.
I need a series of FJ tutorials for real life.
Come on now, everybody knows that you just gotta put yourself into prison and it's an instant acquittal.
I can assure you all of the tips in this video do apply for real life.
Like getting yourself a bull to help you rob a shop etc. It works 100%
I would like to recommend anyone playing for the first time, do not do the things in this video. Play the game how it is meant to be played, at least in your first play through. Getting in over your head, learning just how strong your opponent is, and then coming back to kick their ass is the fun of the game. If you are strong enough to wipe out everything on your first try you lose a lot of what makes kenshi personal.
When I made my first base, it was constantly raised by dust bandits, and they would occupy my building and kick my squad out. I would have to go and hire mercenaries to have them clear the base for me. After my squad became powerful we went out and wiped all dust bandits settlements from the face of the earth. Doing it felt personal, it was my revenge, rather than just to decrease dust bandits spawns.
That's good advice.
Francis pointed out this gets exploity fast, this comment is unnecessary as it is pedantic, there are a million more videos showing how to "properly" play kenshi. Worthless advice.
You said "do not do the things in this video" then told us what to do lol.
Agreed. You CAN break the game and just go on a big power trip. Just like playing D&D, you can min max your character and make yourself Godlike, most people try to do that when they first play, after awhile though you realize there's only so much fun in that. Past that it's about making a realistic character and stepping into their shoes to make a story. For that, Kenshi is an S tier sandbox.
better idea for any new players: you bought the game, play it any way you like to.
"Having a reasonably fast stealth bull is pretty handy" not something I thought I'd hear today. 😂
Theres a really small robotics shop in mongrel, with only the robot shopkeeper looking over his supplies, if u manage to knock him out, his shop inventory is easily worth 100k+
You have to wait for the shop to restock before you do the same thing again.
Oh yeah I just started few days ago and stealing from him regulary lol. Good tip on knocking him down
@@whoknows8223 Kinda makes you wonder how all these Mongrel shops keep getting resupplied lol
@@JB-xl2jc they knock out other shopkeepers and steal their goods
This is just what I needed! Not so much to copy the strat on my first playthrough, but to get a look into how the mechanics fit together... I always struggle in open world games if they just plunk me down, but don't give me ideas on what I'm even ABLE to do in their particular game world... - So I prefer watching something like this first and then my brain is brimming with ideas I would like to try, as I get into the game!
A couple of tips with thievery is that you can turn off certain lights to make the place dark and harder to detect you and, you can use multiple backpacks in your inventory and transfer those, just remember to put back on the right backpack before unpausing
If I ever play, I am definitely training a stealth thief bull. Don't care how difficult, that is now my primary mission in playing Kenshi,
Allied with Gutters by day 11.... Usually takes me a lot longer, and I've never really utilized it by settling in Gut. Thanks for that great tip 😁
Yes! Was hoping you'd show us how to ally the gutters! Love your style and these kinds of videos.
Finally! This is the diabolical, mechanic-abusing guide I have sought 😈 thank you
I made this guide because it was the one I wanted when I first started :)
I hate using mods, so this video was just perfect. I may never use the intel, but I just love sitting on it... just in case.
Oh man you got me laughing so hard with that Distracto-Bull ! Great video !
While Frances does say to start as 'The Nobodies' you actually need to start as 'The Freedom Seekers'
The nobodies spawns you in different locations and only leaves you with 5 people and not 6.
I was wondering why it was not working until i made myself really watch the intro and not just listen.
Man, you are a life saver. Every time I start one of these games that require a PhD to get into I find that you have guides for them.
Thanks to you I was finally able to get into Starsector and it turned out to be among my all time favorites.
I'm hoping the same will be true of Kenshi.
I feel like Starsector and Kenshi are games that are not quite big enough to have decent tutorials for them. You have to spend hours reading old forum posts to figure out how to play them well. It's really a pity as they are great games and deserve more players.
For the "Make Gutters allies" trick, it's more easy when ground floor cages are already full. The slave trader will just enslave the gutter man (3-4s animation) and move away. That's all. No cages interaction. After you buy the slave, the trader (or a guard) will do another short animation for "release". This last animation can be interrupted. Pick up/Drop and the loop starts again. It's not very long and cost something like 400k. I did it with speed #2. If the loop is done fast enough, the slave will never have time to wake up (he must not be awaken for the trick to work).
This was interesting. All those stealing shenanigans reminded me of Divinity Original Sin and the infamous "bucket over shop keeper's head" exploit from Skyrim :)
I really enjoyed seeing a few other games presented which I didn't really know before. Well I knew Starsector and have played it a lot before but you played it completely different. Maybe people like the idea of a random monthly "new" game you try out a bit. You could make a vote for those.
Looking forward to the final episode and the Rimworld Ice Sheet challenge which I hope will be done without relying on the cannibal trait. Otherwise it would just be too easy.
Oh I'm going to try random pawn start, so no picking stats or traits. I'm sure the first dozen or so will die at least. But we should figure out how to survive... eventually.
@@FrancisJohnYT Seconding Wirthi wirth's suggestion of a "random monthly 'new' game you try out a bit". I've loved both series immensely.
I have tried this start now 40 times, and 40 times it has started me in the Shenn Desert Waystation without fail.
Sorry about that.
IMPORTANT I say I start as "The nobodies" but I actually pick "The Freedom Seekers" make sure you pick the freedom seekers.
Yes, let the power of cheesing flow through you.
you can always lock pick a cage, so starting with hardest one you can find is a god idea.
@edit: damn that beak things exploits in a nice one, while i was aware you can use it to ally normal factions and recruit unlimited skeletons i was not aware you can ally gutters, just brilliant!
Hummm that means we don't need to join the thieves guild that early. Makes things a bit more straight forward.
The world of Kenshi is so freaking cruel and harsh, the game practically forces you to take up life of a criminal...but now thankfully I know how to do it right 👍
first off, great video so thankyou for making good and relevant content. Second thankyou for not beggin for a like or a sub.... i swear youre the only youtuber that doesnt and that(and the content) is the reason ive subbed and liked. cheers mate
Will love to check it out once I'm deep into my first play-through. But until then I'm gonna give it a like cos I'm sure you put in some effort. Will be looking forward to checking it out soon!
I rarely comment on this tube here, but I feel compelled to say "Thanks a lot, FJ!" This is just the thing I would have wasted way too much playtime to figure out before I can start enjoying the game. Precisely how I abused FO3, FNV, FO4 and a slew of others. Thanks so much for making it easy on me, and darn the haters who think this is game-breaking abuse. I like game-breaking thiefly abuse^^. Awesome vid, keep it up.
Thanks, I feel bad if all the time I spent learning a game goes to waste. Far better to share it with other people who end up on the same path, saving other people a bunch of time is what I would like everyone to be doing.
@@FrancisJohnYT Did you know that No-Face can be recruited afterwards? Drop him back on his island, he thanks you (I suppose for getting him out and bringing him "home", not the abuse you inflicted on him) and runs off, supposedly looking for his family - in one big loop around the Gutter. I suspect this would work after buying him/bailing him out just once, without the whole shebang, maybe this is another way to befriend Gutters. Will try on the next go around.
Come back later, he recognizes you and you can talk to him, not much in terms of dialogue though. His stats are crazy good, like you'd expect if you seen him fight. Waaay better than any other recruit I saw on the wiki or found during the last few days of play. But you need to meet some pre-requisite for the recruit dialogue to show, otherwise he only offers you money and says he can't leave his family.
@@iriemk9543 I never thought to try, that is a hell of a lot of effort to go through to recruit him though. 400k is a bit expensive. I assume their is a cheaper way?
Man why i never find out about you the commentary is just perfect was worth watching 1h vid and enjoying
Having a reasonably fast stealth bull is very handy!!!
This is the type of video I love
That's for the amazing tutorial, already did many playthroughs and watched many guides, still learned a ton, completely amazed you can ally Beak things!
After hearing all your woes of Beak Things, it feels so exhilarating to see you now breaking the game and making them no longer capable of laying a hoof on you.
24:40 so good at robbery he can do it in his sleep
I use the same strategy of leveling thievery, but I start as a slave. Loving your series that is giving me the same meaning I used (up thievery) but in an even more fun and different way. Use some mods for aesthetics, like Weapons Look metal, Dialogue Expansion, Let s talk, racial diversity, fixing clipping, better crop fixes, Hives and Canibal Expanded, Reactive Wolrd, Animation Overhaul, Race blood, sensible spider range and Dark UI
Delicious cheese. Delicious mozzarella. I love me some cheddar in the morning. I will eat all the brie, just all of it.
Beak Thing nests in Vain are a gold vain. You just need 30 carry weight, 20 mph and a bull/garru.
Find one close to a village, lure them in and you got a 100K worth of eggs, skin and meat.
There are three villages close to Stenn Desert, so getting to them is not risky.
The desert city bank restocks same frequency as vendors, for about 100K per thieving run. It can be hard finding vendors who can buy that many leviathan pearls though.
@@ahmataevowell tbf you can buy alll the scrap master high end stuff and then use the beak thing eggs to fund it making it a very quick way to get edgewalkr weapons
Incredible guide!! Only snag I’ve run into is not being able to find an animal trader
found out a way to cheese assassination skill. Just get an ally, probably any ally will do but I found this out with the skin bandits, allying with them allows you to try to stealth KO their leader (with a STUPID high assassination skill) and they will not agro on you, they say they will, but then just go back to reigning. Every failure gets you about 3-5 levels, and then you have the most powerful attack in the game practically max level.
You can do the same with the shinobi thieves guild, once you join them you can practice on them to your hearts content.
you can reset 'stolen' flag from any items with Item Furnace for x2 profit. Or use item special container, like Boltbox for bolts
That part where you got rid of your bounty by just walking into the prison cell reminds me of Otis from the Andy Griffith show; he was so used to getting arrested for drunk and disorderly he just would get shit-tanked and stumble into a prison cell and lock himself up until morning lol.
LOL! Looks like you got to this "Perfectly Balanced Game" before the Spiffing Brit did! Well done!
entertaining and i really loved the outro too
“Find yourself a cripple.”
You got it boss!
What is the "or" key? You mention it several times and I'm not sure what you're talking about.
The R key on the keyboard, it tells your pawn to stop what they are doing. So if while paused you told them to say move somewhere by accident and you want to cancel that move as they are currently committing a crime, the R key stops them and causes them to stay where they are.
@@FrancisJohnYT Thank you. I've been watching your stuff for years and this is the first time that your accent (I know you don't hear it, nor do I hear my own) has caused me any issues understanding.
Keep up the good work!
No idea if it's due to a mod doing something or pure vanilla Kenshi jank, but a great place to train stealth and other thief stats is the Exile Camp right below the Waystation west of Squin. For some reason they don't mind you sneaking around the camp, even in full sight, but will also attack you if you regular walk into the camp (or just quickly provoke them).
From there, the game considers them all hostile (with the little red cursor on mouse-over), but they don't bother you if you're sneaking, leading to huge stealth gains. I did a bit of stand-up-fall-over toughness training with them too, since you can just hop in one of their beds, no problem, and then sneak out after you've finished letting them beat you up enough
The developers should watch this video and use it as a list of things to fix lol. Another fun thing you can do is the merchant start, you start allied with the merchant guild so while in a town you can literally pick up garrus from a caravan and loot their inventory while they are on your shoulder, without having to farm stealth and other skills.
They're well aware of everything and left it in deliberately.
@@KainYusanagi I think they just didn't want to spend the time debugging. Kenshi 2 won't have so many easily exploitable things I imagine
@@EssDubz They spent years debugging, actually. A lot of idiosyncracies of the game are due to the engine, with some even being ascended memes that the playerbase embraced and didn't want fixed. Kenshi 2 is being built specifically to deal with most of them, at least the ones that are engine-based, since it's in a new engine (from OGRE to Unreal Engine 4).
@@KainYusanagi how soon? Cant wait for Kenshi 2... hope they drop the Holy Nation bs...
What are the odds, i legit saw harp walk in to the bar at the way station as I was following ur video
Now i understand why you didnt want to use Stealth on your last playthrough.
How did I not know there was a Gutter faction?
your exploit just demonstrated monopoly and capitalism, everyone is out of money and you got all the money lmao, great video!
Trader starts of in Heng with an adult bull, it's in the middle of heft and that way station you start at in the vid.
Can level the bull at the same time as your character. If its still a pup you can level it but need to wait until it grows so the stat modifiers comes off and you get your proper level.
for assassination training. pls pin this or something
you can on unpaused hold shift and spam right click and get like 30 attempts in 1 animation of an assassination attempt. overpowered as hell and you can knock out ppl even with 10% chance if u do it properly
I have tried this but can't get it to work, does this require the waypoints mod or is this vanilla? Can you provide more details?

Is there any reason you hold right click and select stealth KO instead of...just right clicking on them? There's no mechanical difference right?
I have had issues with misclicks in the past, I prefer to be real careful when it comes to stealth KO.
But barring that their is no mechanical difference.
Dam what a guide I have been doing everything the hard way so far 😂
Stealth is easy you can do it faster if you go to the Swamped Lab South west of Shark the blood spiders stand on the other side of the locked gate can still see you and you just patrol back and forwards levels you 1-80 in about 2 minutes

The thief build is good becau7se you will never be without money, i make a char with that skills near lv 100 (except thievery that i know how to train now with this video), and my money making was only exploring ancient buildings, taking beak thing eggs and knocking out people with bounties (but that way is good you have more people with sneaking + strengh because you can find more bounties in the same place)
There’s a legal way to double your money early. Head to Port South, buy everything from the slave materials shop, resell literally anywhere.
Grey Desert Waystation is generally speaking very busy, you can get all different kinds of bandits attacking the place which you can choose to help against and loot them for easy early cats. you can even buy and fix the tower to have a base of operations there. Its centrally located so you can get to most anywhere you want quite easily.
Assassination, sneak and thievery are all broken at high levels the AI doesnt handle them well at all and you can just cruise through the game if you want, stealing all the cats ko ing all the bounties and "winning" the game in that sense.
Armor plating makes for decent strength training material.
You can ally with almost any faction using the free from slavery method. Free beak thing omelets for life.
Money printing is pretty easy this way for sure, it's not worth the effort of stealing beak thing eggs to sell, robotic repair kits are more valuable and more compact.
I want to see how quickly we can get to the point of training 10 trainees up to level 80 ish is all the combat stats, I'm thinking strength is going to be the slowest one we level.
@@FrancisJohnYT Probably way too late with this reply but i read on the wiki that you can set a group member to block and then exile them or kick them from the group (sets them to drifters faction) and they will be stuck on block.
Load the trainee up as heavy as possible, carry someone and use either the heaviest weapon you have for ultimate strength gain or go unarmed to power-train martial arts, dexterity and strength at the same time.
As you train your ex-friend will be leveling his defence too so it scales with you to 100 if you are patient.
Another version of this is to find a hostile skeleton and hope one of their legs falls off, put them in a skeleton repair bed and just beat them forever but this will be slower unless you plan on dragging Cat-lon or Tinfist to a repair bed minus a leg... Also works with iron spiders but that's janky and also slower than the block method as "sleeping" things only level toughness and no combat stats leading to slower xp gains as you become more powerful than they are.
Or for the simplest and dirtiest version find a bonedog or similar, have it be put into a time out by some passer-by, carry it to a bed and hit it with blunt weapons for a morally bankrupt yet very successful training method that can level martial arts, blunt and pole arms (with staff) to the 80s in an ingame day or two, bonus strength xp if malnourished so keep hunger just above 100 and technically you will be getting the xp rates of someone at 30 str when you are at 100, have an arm broken for a further 33% decrease to effective strength for 33% bonus xp per strike.
loving it
would love to see you play some farthest frontier
Me too, but maybe when more is known about the game. I'd rather watch FJ play and explain a game he's mastered than see another Lets Play noob fumble around and miss obvious things in the game.
What is the "or"-key? Several times you said: To stop moving, hit the or-key.
The "R" key
Must be my accent.
If you just wanna earn or are at a point where you need to earn cats, going to the swamp buying drugs (hash) then traveling to the flat lakes city is really good for making money. You don’t need to worry about being caught smuggling and you can just sell the drugs for a 705% mark up. Once you have a few companions and animals you can clear out at the hash and usually all the cats from the stores you sell them at. If that happens you can head to Mourn, however there’s an increased risk of running into beak things. Luckily most of the Beal things you run into a fairly well feed and won’t try to eat you alive.
With max stealth and thievery you can clear out an entire city of money. Usually faster than the city can reset so you end up sleeping for a few hours until they get more money to steal.
The funny thing is, leveling up your bull as the thief is meta.
If you get caught the crime will have been committed by the bull, not your men, so the guards will dogpile the bull and beat the jesus out of it, but then will just leave because the bull cannot have a criminal record as an animal.
Im just speaking for myself here but much prefer a let`s play, your last one was my favourite for years. would love an ultra modded series.....

I never tried the stealing thing so this is rather fun. I bought the house in Heft and it has 2 skimmers inside, lovely, and no mercenaries on the roof of the bakery, is there a particular reason that it has to be the merc captain or will any target do over there ?
(edit) in fact I cant get the crossbow to do what you do at all, when I target the guy in the same chair as you my character just start running down the stairs, he has no melee weapon equipped and is on hold and passive ... was this fixed ?

I'm sorry to have to ask but what on earth is the or key? You mention it a few times in relation to stopping your pawns from moving about but IDK what you mean. Thanks for the vid!

Not sure if they changed something but I was never able to get the Gutters allied. Spent 700k and never never got the ally message. Did manage to ally with the Slavers but not the Gutters.
Kenshi has not been updated in ages, everything should still be the same.
You have to be sure that the target is unconscious all the time, if you buy him while he is conscious that is considered a hostile act.
@@FrancisJohnYT I bought him when he was unconscious, but every time they put him back in the cage he would wake up immediately and I would have to knock him out again. I think some of my failed attempts to knock him out may have skewed it a bit, it took another 300k but I eventually got him.
the reason his 90% lock picking is lower is because you get like a half success rate on lock picking when you are trying to lock pick cages/poles/etc from inside
