The SPD is struggling with poor poll ratings in eastern Germany, particularly in Thuringia and Saxony. The Chancellor's party is threatened with a massive collapse in the upcoming state elections. But why is the SPD finding it so difficult to appeal to voters in the east? In an interview with WELT, political scientist Werner Patzelt talks about the reasons
Patzelt explains that the SPD holds on to beliefs that do not correspond to the ideas of many citizens in the East. A current example is the support of Ukraine in the war against Russia, which a significant number of East Germans reject. The SPD also believes that migration is not a problem and that the repatriation of immigrants should be avoided.

The Sahra Wagenknecht coalition, on the other hand, is gaining a lot of support in the East. Patzelt sees this as a possible attractive coalition option for the CDU, which is not considering the AfD as a partner and whose previous alliance partners, the SPD and the Greens, are weakening. In addition, the BSW appeals to many voters because it pursues a clear migration policy, promotes controlled immigration and the repatriation of those who do not have the right to stay. The peace course in the Ukraine war is also well received by many voters.
It remains to be seen whether the CDU will do itself a favor in the long run. After all, the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance is a left-wing party in social policy terms, which carries the risk of even more CDU voters leaving. It could well happen that Wagenknecht's party takes on the role of the deciding factor that the FDP previously held. In Saxony, there could even be a coalition between Wagenknecht's alliance and the AfD to replace the CDU.
