Great video. I’m getting ready to start sleeping in my car at 58. I’m looking forward to it but I haven’t told anyone except my 2 kids and sister because of the stigma of it but besides that I’m excited to start on January 1! My goal is to pay off debt and save money for retirement.
@Gypseagoddess 57 male here, it's getting really bad everywhere for people to afford to live of course. Mental survival mode all the time, not trusting others, trying not to turn too feral. The more prepared the better when it's time to hit the road.
Sounds like a good plan, How did your kids & sister take the news? Hopefully they were supportive! If you have any questions on starting please let me know. I added the video I made called "25 places to park when living in your car" In the description box in the video so check that out. Cheers Mike
The most honest and open vid I’ve seen in a LONG time. You spoke of both the joys and struggles, the heartaches and fun. Nothing is perfect, and too many judge a person by how “conventional “ they are, and how much 💵💵 they may or may not have. This was an excellent review of car living. I built an adventure rig out of an old SUV and for the last few years (after an awful divorce) I have gone to "live in the woods" for 5-10 days at a time when I could get away because I felt more free there than in my nice big house in a really nice neighborhood. My kids and friends do make jokes about me being a sasquatch, but it helped me to realize ALL OF the money I was flushing each month for a house that felt like a prison, when my rig felt like coziest cabin in the woods. The kids "grew up" and I sold the house, am renting 1 room in an apartment, saving soooo much $$ and getting out the apartment is my next goal. I am sorry to hear about the vacuous people you are encountering in the dating world. That sucks that your courage and decency aren't valued, but it is a really good litmus test for people that would suck to be with in the long run. Hope you have better luck with dating in the future :)
@@stphns1737 thank you so much for sharing that and good for you for realizing what’s really important in life and where true happiness comes from. I realize it only takes one good one for a partner so hopefully that will happen some day. Cheers
“Be curious not judgmental.” Thank you Ted Lasso. Mike, there are all kinds of people out there. When they don’t ask you about your dreams and hopes, move on. There are good people; hopefully, you’ll find them.
Thank you Susan and of course instinctually I know that but haven't run into too many people that have their priorities in order. I won't settle for less than I deserve! Thanks for your kind words!
I bought a $50 cot mattress from WalMart, and put a foam sleeping bag mat underneath. I use a quilted waterproof pad on top of the mattress, and nest with blankets, quilts, and comforters. Really comfortable!
@@pauldiestelhorst7681 wow impressive thanks for sharing that. You’ve become a pro at it. Hopefully the garnishment will be removed soon so you can have more options in terms of where you live.
You are you no matter where/how you live. Nobody should judge you for your reasons to bring down debt and get ahead a bit for your future as well. If you ever plan on getting back into a home or apartment one day, that’s a goal you worked for and good on you! If you still like living in a vehicle, still, good on you. Let no man judge you except yourself. If I were to live in a vehicle, I would probably upgrade to a type of van (for a bit more room) I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing and I wish the very best for you!
Thank you so much for your insight and kind words. I can't control how others feel so I am mostly very fine with my life choice. My goal is a van someday since I am tall but for now this vehicle will have to do. The van would be amazing after living in a car for two years...
@MarmaladeOutdoors I go car camping when I can. I just love it. I suppose I could live out of it if I had to as long as I made those adjustments needed to do that, which are big big ones! I totally respect your decision and courage that you are doing it and thriving! I guess everything has its ups and downs but doing what you’re doing will definitely help you to catch up fast to your goals. Just stay safe and keep your head up. You’re doing great! Thanks for taking us along and sharing your stories. God bless.
Lived out of my truck and little trailer for a yr. Hated hauling it. So I traded them in for van. Prepping that very cheaply. Soon to hit the road again. ❤
@ Good luck with that and I think you’ll really enjoy the van comparably to the trailer. I think towing something brings a lot of other considerations and difficulties into the picture for sure. I hope you really enjoy it
I travel across Canada for 2 - 3 months a year in my little Pontiac Vibe. I travel with my small dog. I've arranged my setup so that my bed is always set up. I would hate to have to set it up every night! I have a foam trifold mattress (from Walmart I think) with a ThermaRest camping mattress on top. Super comfortable. I am only 5'2" and not very heavy, so it works well for me.
Sounds wonderful! You’re lucky you’re smaller! Just like my tent for backpacking, I’m always battling the bed (and tent) not being large enough or comfortable enough . Thanks for the nice message
Hello, I came across your channel today and admire your honesty, for being you and inspired of your lifestyle. I am retired and been contemplating on outdoor life in nature. Learn so much by watching you just in this segment. Yes, some people are all about material things to make them happy, but never tried anything else in their life. Best of luck to you and maybe someday I cross your path if I ever start my travel wish for my bucket list. Blessings!!!
The biggest hurdle is overcoming the fact that other people are going to judge you for being houseless plus the fact that you've always lived in a house since you were born

I have drove from Georgia to Washington camped of the cliff of Badlands this my life I want land in the desert one day I love Mountains

Enjoyed your video. I am in the transition of what direction I want to go. My Car is ready, going to give it a good try. Thanks for your insight. I bought my first home at 18. Now I don,t know I am kind of a princess and the pea.
Good luck to you! It’s funny but once you become a nomad a home or apartment can seem like an anchor that ties you to one place. It’s all in the perspective
Thanks for providing some valued insight into car living! It sounds like you are living your best life authentically. There must be at least one woman you could meet who isn't material and enjoys hiking and the outdoors. It only takes one.
Let your partner come to you. Whether it is years or decades or perhaps never. Just be yourself and hopefully someone will follow suit. Don't chase them, you will only hurt your pride and question yourself. I'm sure you know this already but a reminder doesn't hurt :)
Thank you and that’s exactly how I am. It will happen naturally if it’s meant to be. I do not chase people. I’ve had women tell me they wished I had pursued them more because although I’m absolutely not shy I’m not needy and won’t chase people. Thanks for the great advice and nice comment. Happy holidays
You talked about the woman you spoke to in a way that made me feel that even though you said you had so much in common, the truth is that you didn’t. No judgement here but there was an important difference. Some of us, like you are willing to sacrifice almost everything for freedom and believe you will be OK. Maybe even better for the freedom. Others value security and have sacrificed the kind of freedom you have for the security of good health insurance and a home base. Perhaps that is why some people choose to live in tiny homes and cover the wheels whereas others who seem similar live in homes on wheels and keep moving. There is a man, Bob Wells of Cheap RV, interviewed I think his name is Randi not sure about his name, anyway he wrote a book called 40 years a Nomad. What a life he has lived. Book costs $1.00 on Amazon. Good luck to you. I hope you get a chance to build the kind of community that will sustain you on this part of your life adventure.
@@shirleymatthews6692 point well taken… I simply met our passions, hobbies and things we liked to do were very inline with each other. I knew early on we were probably not a match but talked to her a few times to get to know her better. I wasn’t going any further with her because she seemed to be very set in her ways (which I know happens as we get older) but extremely opinionated and she only saw things her way which would NEVER work for me. As I said I wasn’t interested but it would have been nice to have an adult conversation about it instead of just disappearing. We’re not in high school anymore lol. Anyways thank you for the thoughtful message and have a very happy holiday
I'd add mailing address for car registration and insurance. You can ask friends/family or a PO box as last option. Also a small public storage is very useful to store off season clothes, tools, etc.
Thank you and I too have a storage unit and use a friends address. The purpose of this video was to give some of what I felt were the most important suggestions and my feelings and. It list every single last thing you’ll need to live on the road. I’ve made that video already but was just going over what to expect and my take aways from my two years in the car. Thanks for the message happy holiday!
Great video, I see it’s getting a lot of views and that’s because it’s got a lot of great information in it, and the information is very concise and well organized.
Excellent vid, authenticity is priceless these days in our plastic matrix world, bravo on discovering what really matters in life! Rejection is God’s protection.. still, it sucks we live in such a throw away, disrespectful world.. Go to the RTR in Quartzite where you’ll be surrounded by like minded people, there are so many nomadic groups to join these days.. it’s human to want to be accepted, but I’ve learned the people who are meant to be in my life, accept me.. God Bless!
Thank you Tammy for that message and the positivity. I’ve been to the RTR the last two years so I have experienced it a little. I really enjoying touring all the rigs to get ideas and dream. Yes we all seem to be disposable anymore… thanks again and have a happy holiday
I watched a lot of these types of videos, and the one thing that always stands out is that no one talks about health. A lot of folks are older, and the body does break down. What do folks do about teeth problems, severe backaches, and shoulder pain? What happens when there is a bad number two accident in the front seat or a bad case of gout? What do folks do when they can not see at night? sinus problems? Bladder problems where you have to go to the restroom two, or three times a night, keeping track of high blood pressure and the like? What about a medical plan? lol oh" folks like me do notice you sleeping in your car / van.

Great video!! Thank you! Are you in any of the van life groups down in SD? I would love to meet you. I'm in Orange County starting my van life journey 1-2025. Hopefully we can meet some day! Your future van life friend.
Hey there no not really. I’ve joined a few nomadic van life groups on facebook but they’re not specific to Southern California. Where do you find these groups? Would love to meet you sometime… I really enjoy meeting people who follow me here. It surprisingly happens a lot out on trail locally. You must be so excited to start soon? You ready?
Ok, you are not alone in interview pre-dates. Man lost interest when he found out I didn’t want to be in management. He proceeded to tell me how his ex wife moved up the ladder. I said, I have zero interest in managing people cuz I don’t do petty. He had zero interest in learning about me in any other capacity. His behavior was rude and dismissive. Glad it didn’t work out cuz he was annoying as well as judgmental. I too know my worth. Too bad I didn’t live closer as I’m fairly certain that at the very least, we’d be friends. When you travel more, you’ll have to see what I’m building. It’s called a “foamie camper”. I too am driving what will most likely be my first and last ford. Still, thankful for transportation that I own. Lots of good info btw! Glad to hear your experience. The RTR was part of my trial. I lived in my rental car. The hardest part was the night time bathroom. Now I know I can do it, so there is that. I find sleeping/napping in my car sort of relaxing (need a bit more lumbar support) ….when it’s not 30F out. Stay you, stay true! Great attitude!
Hey thanks for that great message MJ, where do you live? What area? We can never have enough friends right? lol yeah it was for the best anyways because I would of let her know I was no longer interested and told her exactly why If she were to ask. Thanks for the share. If a person treats you different based on whether you want to live in a house, rent an apartment, or live in a vehicle, that says something about that person. I don't know about you but personally I wouldn't want to keep friends around that I knew were going to treat me one way or another based on these kinds of external things...
Memory foam lost its memory LOLOLOLOLOLOL , i paid $200. For a deep sleep made for a jeep 3mo it's crap they would not even replace this trash so never again will I spend that much. 1.5 years of car living in CA, 37 yo. I have no clue why people complaint about this way of living bc I'm really enjoying it! While people dreaming of get into the mortgage for the rest of their life or get into the rent of the 4-walls-and-bathroom apts for the half of their income - I'm living where I want at almost no cost. Saving money on no-rent lifestyle allows me to treat my self good and have enough spare time for my hobbies and just for a time to think about. No rat races for me anymore. But the bad thing here - living in the car is pretty stigmatized nowadays. I wish people would keep it simple and be less pretentiousness be more real.
Hello and very well said. I think because I’m a long distance remote wilderness backpacker, those walls are super confining. You’re right if you get a mortgage or long lease you’re not locked in and stuck there and to the man. Our society see the way we live is homeless and a bum. It says you’re only happy and successful if you own lots of things. Those things worried and stressed me out all the time. You’re exactly right that now I have so much more free time to do whatever I want… it’s been an awesome experiment. Thanks for that! Happy holidays
Is the Ford escape cargo area long enough to fit you length wise? If its a hybrid Escape you have climate control all the time as the engine shuts off and on while you sleep.
I barely and I mean barely fit in the Bronco Sport. Yeah the hybrid escape may be what I get since I’ve filed for the lemon law on this car. I thought only electric cars like the Prius turn on and off not hybrids. Am I incorrect?

That’s such awesome news! Trust me it will be the adventure of a lifetime. The freedom is like nothing you have experienced. We’re all taught that success is owning a home but in reality it can be an anchor that you’re tied too. You’ll be able to go and do literally whatever you want now. One thing you could do is visit every state.. that’s my goal. I agree 💯 in terms of the car dealership. I’ve been dealing with them for two months, 8 loner cars and they still haven’t been able fix it so I’m in the middle of filing a lemon law so hopefully that goes through but because of this I have had to deal with the dealership for two straight months almost everyday and they are as about as shady and unprofessional as it gets… I literally HATE stepping foot on that place but it’s currently a necessary evil 😈 for now. Good luck to you and if you haven’t, start planning your escape now! Happy holidays

Isn’t that what California women are like though, materialistic. I’ve been single so long I’d just like to have a partner to share with, it’s not what you own that makes you a decent human and the women that put you through a “interview” just to go on a date should be your first red flag that that union won’t be for you. Thanks for your honesty. Unfortunately,it's a small percentage mature women in the US for whom resources and security are their top requirements. Some great tips thanks for sharing your journey with us. As for finding a like minded partner, try going to events and social connections with those already living this lifestyle. Those still in the matrix just don't get it. There are lots of nomad women in San Diego and I hope you find a beautiful soul to spend your hiking and future with. Maybe try going to Quartzite for the RTR in Jan and meet others. Sorry to hear about your vehicle, an air mattress really does suck and leak. Maybe a minivan would give you more room to sleep comfortably. Best of luck to you!!

I enjoy watching your video when you do decide to retire go visit another country like Thailand you can rent a nice condo on the beach for $300 include wi fi and water food approx $300 per month you don’t need transportation because everything is with in walking distance Thailand is world class in good dental and health care you can get a international health plan at a cheap cost or you can fly back to the united state for your health care most foreigners that move to Thailand ride a scooter or take public transportation or walk. You have lots of good option at a cheap cost. And most woman don’t care about material things there very good and nice woman. Thailand is a country where there is no racism or judge a mental people thailand is a beautiful country with beautiful beaches and for under $1000 per month you can live a very good life as long as you don’t drink alcohol smoke or chase the bar girls. This is my plan when I reach 62 my social security about $2500 per month I can live on $1000 and save $1500 per month it’s a win win situation and you will be a happy man.
Sad but true once you reach a certain age women are not interested in romance just finance. You can't blame them because I'm not looking for someone to take care of either 🤷

Thank you and yes it is! That's true in anything you do...
Cheers

If I were to live in a vehicle, I would probably upgrade to a type of van (for a bit more room)
I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing and I wish the very best for you!
Thank you so much for your insight and kind words. I can't control how others feel so I am mostly very fine with my life choice. My goal is a van someday since I am tall but for now this vehicle will have to do. The van would be amazing after living in a car for two years...
@MarmaladeOutdoors
I go car camping when I can. Lived out of my truck and little trailer for a yr. Hated hauling it. So I traded them in for van. Prepping that very cheaply. Soon to hit the road again. ❤

We can never have enough friends right? lol yeah it was for the best anyways because I would of let her know I was no longer interested and told her exactly why If she were to ask.

Isn’t that what California women are like though, materialistic. I’ve been single so long I’d just like to have a partner to share with, it’s not what you own that makes you a decent human and the women that put you through a “interview” just to go on a date should be your first red flag that that union won’t be for you. I use a friends local address but I realize that’s tough. I’m being told by others you can pay for an address at UPS and I guess it looks like an actual address. Not sure exactly how it works so maybe others here can share their knowledge.. thanks for the question! Happy holidays
@ yes that’s the best. Find a family or friend for mail. Friend or family seems the better option. I believe you’re right about an address with fed ex or ups.
Thanks for your honesty. Unfortunately,it's a small percentage mature women in the US for whom resources and security are their top requirements. A foreign born and/or younger woman might accept you for who you are and for the adventure. Guy friends a nomad group or a dog are a better bet for companionship. 👍💛🏆
Trust me I realize that reality. The way I look at it is that I don’t need to have a lot of different candidates, just one great one!
Do you tint your windows? Or is that not a good idea?
Each state is different but here’s California’s laws:
California's window tinting laws regulate the darkness and reflectivity of window tint based on the location of the window on the vehicle:
Front side windows: Must allow at least 70% of light to pass through, or have a Visible Light Transmission (VLT) of at least 70%
Front windshield: Tint is limited to the top four inches of the windshield
Back and rear windows: Any tint darkness is permitted
Tinting color: Amber, blue, and red tinting are prohibited
Reflectiveness: Tinting must not be more reflective than a standard window
Certification: Drivers must carry manufacturer certification for their tint to show that it complies with state law
Penalties for violating California's window tinting laws include:
First offense: A "fix-it ticket"
Second offense: A $25 fine and an order to remove the tint
Third offense: An infraction and a $197 fine

I’m seriously considering living in my car. I recently moved to Indiana, and went from paying $600 a month for a 3br 1 1/2 bath brick house to paying $1000 a month for a room in someone else’s house! Indiana thinks it’s NY or California 😂
That is crazy and yeah if you were in the same place here in SoCal it would be between double or triple that.. they are literally pricing people out of places to live now
Come retire in Ensenada baja Mexico.
Cheaper and same wheather.
It’s beautiful down there but I don’t speak any Spanish
Aman
This guy needs to date his dentist..😅
@@asherrutledge1801 great idea! Maybe I’d get a discount!!! lol
I recently got dental work in Tijuana. it's way more affordable than America
Ask Jesus. He'll bring you the right companion. He is the creator of everything and the Savior of us all.
Thanks for the video. I can relate to the loneliness. It is hard. You know you can always reach out to us/your community if you need some social.
@@justinvardas8654 thank you so much… I think I tend to not reach out to people here for help. They watch channels for entertainment or education but not a persons problems so I keep them for myself for the most part. Happy holidays
You are the most intelligent homeless man I ever known...I think u r homeless cause I want to.
WHY "MARMALADE"???
Women just want a meal ticket. Most of them anyway.
A lot of them do but not all, only takes one good one! Happy holidays
Sad but true once you reach a certain age women are not interested in romance just finance. You can't blame them because I'm not looking for someone to take care of either 🤷
I’m not looking for anyone to take care of me, but it seems to be ok for women to want that… I can take care of myself
I respect your choices, but if you don’t want to continue get disappointed by women please look for one that has your lifestyle otherwise you’re fu*ed…🤷♂️
