Great idea to steam bread. I once found a 5 gallon square can on a camping trip. I cut three sides of top and turned it into an oven. Baked bread twice in it. I just put it beside the fire and covered most of the can with dirt. Worked great.
I want to take a moment to thank Connie for all the work she does in making these videos. She does a terrific job holding the camera and supporting what you do. You two make a wonderful team. Happy Camping y'all.

This method of baking bread has become my favorite bread by far at home or in the woods. Give it a try some time if you care to. You just may enjoy it as much as we do.

First off, thanks for all of your fantastic videos!
I like the idea with the steaming concept.
I've been baking bread a few times, with an inch of sand and baking paper or similar, to keep the bread clean. I've had a fire going to produce a few inches of coals and then just sit the pot on top of that. The sand will distribute the heat a bit, and if you turn your pot every now and then, it turns out great, with an awesome crust.
I believe it was baking for somewhere between 1 and 2 hours, but I don't really recall. It should sound hollow, when knocking on it :)
This approach is probably less fail safe, but it lets you bake with just a pot.
I hope you get my point, even though I'm not native in english.
Thanks again, and keep up edutaining us :)
    Best regards
    Rune from Denmark

To bake the bread with baking soda is a great opportunity when you're in the woods.

We have done similar for many years using cinnamon rolls or dinner rolls in get in the tubes in the refer section. The only difference in what we did was to very slowly pan bake over very low heat and turn the rolls several times. It seems like that is the best food you can have when its cold and you're hungry. I'll have to try your method and see how it works.

The use of the steamer to maintain a constant temperature is very useful on its own and we will try to make some mixes ourselves for use on our little boat. I have a folding colman oven that works on a camp stove and on a fire over a griddle but it's too big and heavy for packing. Using water to regulate temperature is a great idea. I carry a zebra pot so making a homemade grate with legs would be a simple task. I use all in one pancake and biscuit mix that should work well. I'll try it on the barbecue and see how it goes. Thanks for the idea.
