It is a shame this didn't run longer considering the immense talent of the cast and the director (who went on to direct Thoroughly Modern Millie & Spring Awakening!). But it did snag Tonys for both Roger Bart as Snoopy and Kristin Chenoweth as Sally making them big time Broadway stars before their more famous shows (The Producers and Wicked, respectively). I also love hearing Chenoweth AS Sally go into her soprano. I mean the idea of this little girl with this big operatic voice...no wonder Ben Brantley fell in love with her.
Also, having found out that B.D. Wong, the actor playing Linus, also plays Dr. Wu in the Jurassic Park series. Now all I can think of is how Dr. Wu is singing about his blanket.
I just gotta say,Ms Aurora, Of all the rabbit holes I have fallen into, yours is the very best trip ever! I played Charlie Brown....my Charlie Brown needed Prozac.
I remember seeing a clip of the show on the Tony's. Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this role in "Charlie Brown" with Kristin Chenoweth as Sally more or less her became her "big break" when the doors started opening on Broadway for her as a top performer? I don't know what she played between this show and "Wicked" but soon she became a big star--musical theater, TV & film. I have always liked B.D. Wong. Most beautiful speaking voice for the theater but I liked him voicing the male lead Shang in "Mulan" so much. Thanks for posting! :)
Thanks so much for all you share! I am from Oklahoma and ironically my manager had a stepdaughter and Kristin was her babysitter. I think it must have been while she was a student at Oklahoma City University.
There really wasn't anything wrong with it. Perhaps it's too small a show for a Broadway revival. But it was also slightly ahead of its time, as the market for family shows has grown quite a bit since '99. And Brantley in the Times liked only Chenoweth (same for "Wicked").
Daniel The Wolf They felt there was too much production value. The 6 actors didn’t really fill the enormous Broadway house. Some shows just aren’t made for broadway and unless they expand the cast, Charlie Brown isn’t one of them, even though it’s one of the classics, which is saying a lot given the fact that this particular version is only 20 years old. The director took a huge risk “Broadway-ifying” this show, and it didn’t work.
The original version was far more simplistic and minimalist than the revival, but it lasted way longer. Even though nowadays, this version is the one that’s often done by regional, professional, and children’s theatre.
Believe it or not.....its boring. The pace is uneven, songs are just ok (thank god for HAPPINESS) and the production value is next to none. This is meant for OFF Broadway like THE FANTASTIKS.
Interesting story from the BroadwayCon reunion panel: the producers decided they were going to close the show the week after the Tonys that year if it didn't win Best Revival. Then Chenoweth and Bart won and the ticket sales shot up, but apparently the producers kept their word. It was a bittersweet experience for the cast: they felt like they got this victory with two of their own being recognized, only to immediately close.
Hope Clarke this was made in 99 so because of copyrights it unlikely that a full production of this is still floating around. They just did a revival too. So I doubt it.
Why don’t they release any broadway shows on dvd???? I want this so bad!!! Also, the character of Schroeder shouldn’t have been black... the only black character is Franklin... the guy who plays snoopy is amazing! Lucy is too, Kristen is the best though. Charlie is eh... and idk if his cross eyes are on purpose or what but he doesn’t embody the character at all
They mostly choose characters on the Directors choice. The Director thought that he was the best choice, regardless of race. I also believe that Anthony Rapp, Charlie Brown, wears glasses. He might have a lazy eye or something. And I want this on DVD too, oml-
You're right, Franklin was the black character. Since Franklin is one of the characters omitted from the play, I appreciate the character change. And love that the value of representation continues with the 3 HS versions I've seen. They all had a 1 or 2 black characters. It also is in keeping with the spirit of Charles Schultz, who created Franklin to better serve/represent his complete audience. You didn't note that Linus isn't of Asian decent in comic strip - 🤔

I love how Kristin plays it as Sally’s ‘grown up’ voice, and how it almost surprises her when it comes out
Also, having found out that B.D. Wong, the actor playing Linus, also plays Dr. Wu in the Jurassic Park series. Now all I can think of is how Dr. Wu is singing about his blanket.
Daniel The Wolf and he did the voice for Sheng in Mulan (Not his singing voice)
I don't know how such an innocent song could actually make me cry.
this is just A+ musical theatre man! I'm sure SO fulfilling to do this show.

And here I am waiting for BD Wong to get the hell back on Broadway in 2024
I just gotta say,Ms Aurora, Of all the rabbit holes I have fallen into, yours is the very best trip ever! I played Charlie Brown....my Charlie Brown needed Prozac.

Yes, this was KC's big Broadway break, and began Ben Brantley's worship of her.

Anthony rapp's placement is CRAZY
This cast is so silly
This is how I imagined all of the characters to sound 😭
Not to mention they’re all amazing actors omg
People always forget about the guy who plays charlie brown
Quick question...How did this fail!?!?! You have great actors, great script and sets, and even Kristin Chenoweth! How did you fail?!?

Amazing, thank you! Do you have a link to the full production?

Well you're in luck because someone posted the full Broadway version 😁👍
Bryce Johnson where was it posted?
@@jonathanjacob7557 I always held out hope the producers had a full performance copy or the licensing company, United Media. I would buy it
@@imaginatenation3697 where did you find it?
I’ve been looking all over for this!!! Do you have a link to the full show?
I love kristen chenoweth and Anthony rapp 💕
I'm gonna be playing Linus in an upcoming production!
Do you have the kite song and/or happiness?
Do you have anymore clips of the *brilliant* K. Cheno in this? I would LOVE to see more...
You can probably guess that I haven't posted "My New Philosophy" as she did it on the Tonys.
Obviously! I've seen that performance MANY times, but I was hoping there would be more documentation of other scenes....
Anthony Rapp!! 😍
Anywhere I can find the rest? This is great quality

@@HRHRUIZ The black character here wasn’t Franklin. It was Schroeder.
The original off-broadway production was so sweet and innocent... just like the strip. This seems quite... cruel. Sorry, Charlie.
Do you have the full show in this quality??
0:50 😂
0:51 😂
Do you have the whole thing?
