    I'm born, raised, and still live in Dallas so I know all about the franchise pre-Dirk. Drafting spares like Randy White and Doug Smith set them back a few years. The 3 Js were great, but couldn't get along so that set them back even further. I remember when they drafted Dirk and people were calling him a bust his first year. Oops.

      We honestly didn't deserve dirk. The Mavs were horrible at getting free agents that would help him win and would settle for players that are past their prime.

    Before Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks had excellent players in Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman,Brad Davis,Jay Vincent, Derek Harper
    and Sam Perkins.
    Davis came from the CBA, and played in the team's maiden season in 1980-81. Aguirre was an excellent scorer, but was also known for being a bad
    seed off the court. Regardless, the Mavs had some good teams, but they could not escape the specter of the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs.

  • @Albert8044

    The mid 90's Mavs team with Jason Kidd,Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson could've been the Mavs long term future but their off-court issues got them all traded out of Dallas.
    In the late 1980's as a lifelong Pistons fan during the Bad Boys era,the trade Mark Agguire for Adrian Dantley was a gift for the Pistons,from that point onwards like they always say the rest is history.

    Kidd was awesome as a rookie in Dallas! Kidd had a Luka-like 38 point triple-double in a clutch win over a good Rockets team in route to being the first Mavericks player to win Rookie of the Year.
    It was heartbreaking 💔 when they broke that team up and traded Kidd who was so obviously destined for for the Hall of Fame. Thank God he made it back to Dallas in time to help Dirk get them both rings.

      I think he was unfairly criticized at times. He was a very good coach for a long time and was mostly successful until the ‘90s. Some say that if he had still been the coach in 1987-88, the team would’ve played even better in the playoffs that year snd gone past the Lakers. We’ll never know, but perhaps it’s true.

      There’s no evidence that Kidd and Jackson met Braxton in Atlanta. And the Triple J’s denied this.

I remember a lot of great talent wasted during the "cocaine era" Tarp, Orlando Woolridge ( who did the between the legs dunk way back in the '84 dunk contest) Michael Ray Richardson, John Lucas, although much latter you could throw Richard Dumas in there too, how the Lakers were even able too play much less win championships is a small miracle... He missed the story of the 80's Mavs. They were a role model for clubs until the Roy Tarpley draft and career. Tarpley started the downfall with his drug use and suspensions and then they started overthinking the draft and you get Randy White, Doug Smith, Jim Farmer, Steve Alford, Cherokee Parks and Samaki Walker. Add in the team being cheap in the 90's plus bad draft picks and you get a wasted decade. Don Nelson was starting the turnaround and then Cuban willing to spend to be good started the rebuild. You also have to mention Aguirre became a cancer in the locker room and Dantley was as bad in Detroit. The mid 80's Mavs was a blast to watch and should have been good into the early 90's. Its similar to the Celtics and Len Bias dying. They just were a stronger franchise and recovered faster.

    Before Dirk was there, the Mavs were basically an irrelevant franchise despite having some of its best years in the 80s. Dirk was simply that good and he singlehandedly made them a relevant franchise and thank goodness for that. Oh Mark Cuban also deserves some credit too.

    If the Mavs exist from 1980, that means Dirk was there for the bigger part of their existence (18 years without Dirk, 21 years with Dirk). Damn.

    No matter you are LeBron fans/haters, KD’s, Curry’s. You have to admit, Dirk’s ring is worth more than any of Bron’s, KD’s, Curry’s. Maybe not Bron’s 2016 ring.

    • @RuiRuichi
      @RuiRuichi 5 років тому +2

      Nah they all deserve their rings. Fans are getting too soft invalidating championships just because most owners,gms,coaches and players of other teams aren't doing their jobs properly.

    • @a.wyattmann4370
      @a.wyattmann4370 5 років тому +2

      @@RuiRuichi He isn't saying they don't deserve it, if you look at Dirk's 2011 run it was just him carrying the team and he torched the Blazers, Lakers, and the Heat and those 3 teams were stacked that year. Most people don't give Dirk a lot of credit for how insane that playoffs run was for the Mavs.

    • @joesmith8725
      @joesmith8725 5 років тому +1

      Dont forget David Robinson of the Spurs. All of those tuff years in his first 10 seasons in the playoffs and that one down year (injured, where the Spurs hit the lottery in '97), before finally winning the Spurs 1st NBA title in 1999. With a young Tim Duncan. The Spurs were a bad lottery team from the mid - late '80s. Robinson was coming to a treadmill small market franchise, but they finally broke thru big time since then!

  • @smoothALOE

    There was a variety of reasons why the Mavs couldn’t get over the hump in the late ‘80s and ultimately stayed in the gutter for most of the ‘90s. Mark Aguirre, as good as he was, could’ve been even better. As the leader, he set a bad example from time to time, which cost the team, especially in 1988. The team in the early ‘90s had a lot of talent, but they couldn’t stay healthy. Then, they had bad luck in the Lottery and drafted poorly most of the time. To me, Jim Jackson was the biggest problem between he and Kidd and Mash. They played better w/o him in ‘95 and probably should’ve traded him in the off-season that year. He also held out for most of ‘93, which led to the team going 11-71, along with bad coaching along the way. Don Nelson changed everything for the better and Mark Cuban was the icing on the whole cake. It was a perfect match. God bless them for what they did for the Dallas Mavericks 👍
