Americans place far more value on MB cars than other countries by a wide margin. This is a misguided approach. MB has made some truly remarkable cars over the years worth every bit of their cost premium, but not every car they have made is. I just recently bought a poverty spec W124 300D with horrible paint, a badly running engine, bald dry-rotted tires and a climate control system that would work a lot better if the windows did. BUT, its a good basis for a daily driver with some work. There's no real reason to spend tons of money on restoring this car. It's not uncommon, it's not unique in any way, and there will be no return on the investment outside of it's longevity.
I replaced every inch of vacuum lines to discover that it's cutting boost due to a shorted out vacuum transducer Y31/5. That part is extremely expensive, and a used part will be 30 years old and a gamble. For $100, I replaced the wastegate actuator with a pressure actuated one. This eliminated the entire vacuum circuit for that transducer and with a little adjustment to the actuator, the car runs like the day it left the factory. I feel great about doing it. Some inexpensive RockAuto motor mounts to replace the blown out 30 year old factory ones, a bunch of bushings and aftermarket suspension components to clean up the wobbly ride, and it's a true dream to drive. Im into the car for less than $5k total and it's worth every bit. I'm certain that if I hadn't bought it, the next owner would have sent it to the yard it was so horrible. I love this car as much as the original owner did who got it it's first mileage badge. I'll get it it's second, but I'm not going to restore it.

I love how Pierre's own editior just "dissapeard" him mid-sentence at the very end of the video. Like, you guys do realize that you didn't have to break for commercial hard break or other time constraints like that, right?

I just bought a 1996 C250 turbodiesel wagon. I know you don't like the W202, but it was really my only option, since I require a station wagon and the S124 is just too long for my garage. I am determined to make the thing run forever! It's a good one too - elegance trim with self leveling suspension

Some years ago, I gave my beloved 300sdl to me nephew. I told him, this car would last his entire life if he took care of it. Some months later, I witnessed it parked in his driveway with the drivers window all the way down and the sheepskin seat covers completely saturated. Never again.

The climate in Northern Europe, to which I include my country of England as a lot to answer for when it comes to the longevity, or lack of it on older cars, so original cars are perhaps rarer, and hence restoration is the only option. Enthusiasts are forced to replace many body and chassis parts due to corrosion. Unfortunately some 'restorers' go off piste and do not maintain the factory originality, one thinks of the ridiculous 'slamming' fad, and the American idea of chroming the hell out of everything on a car, this to me is heresy. I have an original W108, which lived its first 46 years in Sydney, Australia so with proper care it will never require any welding etc, other than accident damage. Italians and Spaniards have climates that are kind to steel body cars, and therefore a better choice of old originals, they don't love cars any more than the Germans or the English. As for France, the number of dents on all their cars gives you a good impression of their car care, and I say that being a bit of a Francophile.

Always use original parts (or OEM). Always leave an old/classic car in the garage.

Can you expand on the blue jeans thing? I'd never head of that. I've worn jeans for years with four Benz's and never noticed any seat degredation.

Pierre. I have a 1985 380SL, which when cold the revs go up and down. If I accelerate 1000 to 1200 rpms, this stops. Once it warms up, the revs stabilize. What causes this problem?

For old houses, antique items of all types and high quality cars-preservation or restoration to original state is THE premium concern.

People get very excited when they see W115 and W123 in Greece now. Probably because these cars were fairly common there at the time and people feel a certain connection with them so when they find examples that are in nice shape they get very emotional.

In South Africa these cars are well preserved and presented. There's a temptation to bling them up sometimes, chrome pipes, rims, arches and that weird shit they wrap around steering wheels..

Such vulgar treatments are performed by the ignorant. Very sad and it happens with all classic and antique items from Victorian homes through to quality vehicles. My 1902 home, packed with irreplaceable features was originally protected from the ignorant by a Covenant. This protection was stripped away-now few such amazing homes exist. I remember a house restoration specialist told me that most people wouldn’t put the latest Lexus doors on a classic Mercedes-but they do this kind of stuff all the time with antique homes.
