To be honest, this was Tower's mistake. Tower told him to contact Tower. He was on the Tower frequency. That instruction makes no sense. Tower should have either told him to advise when ready to copy a phone number or (probably preferred since he was already in the traffic pattern where he doesn't need to be distracted) told him to expect a phone number to copy upon landing.

I had a very similar experience. I had been cleared to hold short (Cessna 152), and as I was crossing the taxiway I noticed a shadow passing over from my left. I looked to my right in time to see a 172 touching down on the taxiway. He had landed right over my wing. Tower asked him if the runway seemed a bit narrow today. Dummy landed on a narrow little 'runway' with a yellow line down the centre, right next to a big wide runway with all sorts of runway markings (and no aircraft sitting cross-ways). Nice sunny day too. If he had landed just a bit shorter, we could have shared cockpits.

Y'know, there's no law that says taxiway A needs to be straight and run the length of the runway. Obviously, it confused Harrison Ford. That's a choice to make Alpha a parallel made by planners without the pressure of landing an airplane, possibly after a long flight. Murphys law - if it can be confused as a runway, it will. There might be a better layout; while we're at it, maybe avoid multiple choice intersections near two runways. Etc... maybe offset the threshold enough that airplanes landing aren't a threat to those holding short. In short, there are decisions that can improve safety - make those first before complaining that sometimes people make errors.

Sounded like an older person but it must be their first time going to a fly-in event like this. They should have been clued in a long time ago that something was wrong. These events say don't call in but they do say monitor (as the pilots said he was on frequency) because the tower still issues you a landing clearance. You don't just land on your own. They identify your aircraft color and type (or "high-wing" or "low-wing") to give you landing clearance on a colored dot (like in the satellite image) and acknowledge by rocking your wings. The fact that he heard nothing because it was too early, should have been the first sign that something was up. He chose to land anyway.

However, in this case, the aircraft was currently flying back around the pattern to land at the same airport after doing a go-around. Even in general aviation, this is a high workload time with several checklists that need to be run, plus looking for traffic, and, of course, actually flying the plane. Lots of flights coming in trying to figure out 10R/28L because it's not on their chart that way. Also a lot of pilots asking Tower for fly-in info that the tower doesn't know.
They do run a special ATIS when people are arriving. The FAA even put out an arrival procedure video a few weeks ago. It's going to be fun to watch the exodus tomorrow after the show ends.

  • @MidEx216
    @MidEx216 Місяць тому +5

To be honest, this is just a demonstration of a pretty standard issue nowadays:
Pilots getting their information via other methods. Even though we still have an ATIS broadcasting all the time, pilots will still use information from online weather sources (that don't have NOTAMs), markers on moving maps that show TFRs (but didn't read the actual information of the TFR), and widely distributed event information (rather than the live broadcasts of information).
I'm not someone who's going to rant about Foreflight or those things - they're great tools - but too much ease of access to some information has meant the easy to attain information often is used over the most detailed information.

Most of the major fly ins like this have specific procedures to keep pilots from talking over ATC while they're trying to handle a much larger volume of traffic inbound to the airport. From the 2024 SNF PDF: "ATC will contact you in the vicinity of Lake Parker’s north shore, using your aircraft “color” and “type” to
provide sequencing and other arrival information. ATC may ask you to “rock your wings” as an acknowledgment of instructions. Do not transmit unless

I don't know what happened in this situation.
That said, the operation at the show was extremely disorganized. For example, the Notice to Airmen stated the airport opens each day at 0700, listing times for each day individually. But on Saturday, they were holding a 5k race on the runway at 0700, and the runway was closed. Tower advertised ATIS NOVEMBER, with runway 28L in use, and said nothing about a closed runway or closed airport for the race. Nor did many of the volunteer marshallers around the field know that the runway was closed for a race, and they did their job directing departing aircraft to the runway. So a long conga line of aircraft who planned to depart had to shut down for over an hour at the hold short line, and nobody, including the marshallers knew anything about the race; and LAL ground didn't respond to radio calls during this time.
Then the ride sharing spot at the main entrance -- at a sharp curve on a narrow two lane road -- is downright dangerous. They should have them use a parking lot like most modern airports. Or better yet, operate a shuttle to the nearby hotels, some of which are actually on the field.
Without a shuttle, there is no reason to pay the significant premium for an LAL airport hotel if you're going to the show. It will cost you 30 bucks a day for Ubers to get less than a mile across the field. Not a welcoming experience.

Why am I not surprised this aircraft is registered to a ministry? Missionary pilots seem to be the centre of a lot of these incidents.

Hopefully the other pilot also filed a report along with the tower.

I'll never understand how any competent pilot could mistake a taxiway for a runway. That being said I'm still shocked Harrison Ford still has his license.

For those wondering, N5141R is owned and operated by a conservative evangelical Christian "ministry" whose stated mission is to "provide air transportation" but whose members seem to spend most of their time aggressively proselytizing at air shows.

Common, a taxiway isn't so bad.
    ...At night,
I had one student during a stage-check line me up to land on a mall's parking lot. :)

      Let’s see
One has blue and green lights
One is festooned with off white, green, and PAPI’s
One has strangely positioned white lights

I was wondering how that many mistakes could've been made in such a short period of time. The pilot is *definitely* still at fault, but man was there a lot going on. It's the same at Oshkosh every year: there's always going to be an idiot, making it harder for them to do something dangerous is sometimes the best way to prevent them from doing something stupid

The only way he could've handled that worse was telling ATC to send him an email about it
