As a Yank, and a Newcastle supporter, this is a blast to watch. Our big rivalries in the US are tied to college sports (Army-Navy, Texas-Oklahoma, Michigan-Ohio State), but I loved this. And to be honest, I'm glad the day saw no real violence or dickhead moves. Well done to both sides. Howay the Lads.
I’m a Liverpool fan but I’m a big fan of the NBA but I feel like when you guys go to watch a sport it’s very similar to going to the cinema or a theatre. You go to be entertained. In Europe, it’s so much more tribal, personal and prideful in the team you support and the city you come from. Lakers fans don’t like Boston but it’s more of a kind of dislike out of success it’s not hatred whereas like Sunderland and Newcastle whether you’re a Maccam or a Geordie just a mere mention of the other party is frowned upon and I know that coz my mam is a Geordie and I’ve lived in Newcastle the last two years. Obviously, you’re American so you can probably explain it better first hand but just the intensity of the football rivalry can’t be beaten. Like for me personally there’s nothing like Manchester United vs Liverpool and I’m sure Newcastle fans would say the same for Sunderland
There are always doubters but it’s my opinion that we are a club in unity , Amanda Staveley is pure class as is the rest of the club , owners and supporters and thanks to the to the SMB’s for such a warm welcome , I’m sure that actually helped your cause immensely 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
The history, and hatred of these two cities go, as far back as the English civil war. Royalists Vs Parliamentarians, then to ship building, and mines, etc later on. Even though alot of fans on both sides probably didn't even know this, and why some fans take this game so serious. Great question, but you can tell they didn't even know why hahaha. Anyway great win for us, and now you can all answer that question in the future 😉
But it's pathetic, isn't. The civil war? Give me a break. It's a fake rivalry because let's face it, culturally the people of Tyneside and Wearside are indistinguishable from each other regardless of what the haters like to preach. There's enough genuine hatred around the world and in the news at the minute without this bullshit.
As a Sunderland supporter I accept we lost but to refer to men against boys is insulting and "could" be responded to by "more money against less money". We weathered a battering up to half time and the killer goal at the start of the second half really knocked the wind out of us. I have been to many derbies in my 75 years of supporting Sunderland a generally it was to evenly matched teams with local lads playing, we will never see this again as Newcastle are now with the big boys and unless our owners sell us to even richer foreigners we are the poor relations. I know many Newcastle supporters and they are embarrassed by the wealth of the club because it is destroying the spirit and banter. The way forward is teams like Newcastle leave the Premier League and form an international Arab and Chinese money League.
They have flags of her calling her plastic... they really are a dispicable bunch. Like calling Tripps a nonce based on a made up story by a Mackem when these same clowns sang *"Adam Johnson - he f***s who he want's"* in defence of their actual convicted peado winger.
Darby games are not l repeat not the same as they were in the 70s and 80s corporate fans at all clubs now waving silly flags handed out by the club not a working class game anymore even up there in pigeon land clad l don't go anymore same up and down the country bring back the real fans ban cctv

How can this be called a Derby if the the two clubs are from two different citys. Is it a derby if liverpool play city even tho the grounds are close ? . Celtic and rangers is a derby Liverpool and everton or man united play man city is to but this isnt
The cities are near neighbours and were direct rivals in the shipbuilding trade in their industrial heyday, every contract going to one mentioned less going to the other, both ultimately lost out in the end.
These two cities also went to war with each other in the English civil war. Royalists Vs Parliamentarians. Most British people have no Idea of the hatred between these two clubs, and cities.
The geordie fans went “ mild” when they scored. Polite applause broke out. Used to have incredible away support but yesterday they were poor and not a patch on Sunderland’s support. ( from a neutral)
Your not gonna take my opinion seriously cos am a Sunderland fan but yesterday I thought yous were really poor until the 2nd goal was expecting more tbh

Ain’t that the truth 👍😂😂😂
Is this the English equivalent to the old firm derby?
No its not simply because its not based on bigotry and religeous hatred
It certainly wasn’t “ bouncing” very poor support from New fans. Very elderly support in that away end
When Newcastle last visited Sunderland some of the fans destroyed the toilets and ripped seats
The SOL is a toilet

Fair play to the Mackems - they were loud and made some serious noise. I think the early start quietended the mags.
