The Bateria warm-up is one of the most exciting moments before the Rio Carnival Parade. The bateria warm up, as the name suggests, happens before the official carnival parade starts. Bateria is the name given to the samba percussion sector within a samba school, also called samba drumming. The bateria seen on this video is from Caprichosos de Pilares samba school.
Zooming inside the samba drums is an interesting experience. We feel the energy of the samba drumming as it reverberates across the atmosphere. The expressions of the samba drummers give us a glimpse of the energetic dimension of this expression. This Brazilian Carnival bateria is composed of the surdo (surdo de samba ), tamborim wing, the caixa ( snare drum ), the small frying pan, the samba agogo ( similar to cowbells ), the “chocalho”, the cuica to mention some of the samba drums instruments. We can see all of them inside the samba drumming. It is impossible not to feel the goosebumps!
Each samba school has a Bateria Director. In this case, the bateria is directed by Alexandre Brandão, the Mestre de Bateria, we can not only see but integrate ourselves with the rhythm of samba drumming. This year, Caprichosos de Pilares made a theme called “Tem Gringo no Samba”, a homage to Servian soccer player Dejan Petković. We can also see the different Mestres de Bateria. A bateria de carnaval has not only an overall director but also specific masters, which are the sub-directors of the Bateria. There is a master for the Surdo drum, the caixa, the agogo, the cuica section, and so forth. The nickname of Caprichosos de Pilares Drum Section is Called Venenos de Pilares. Great vibes!
