No need to buy a x in one board with Jamma headaches. Cheaper to get a HDMI to VGA dongle (any will do) and use a Pizero(W) with RetroPi. Use GPIO for the controls. Works great with this little VCB. $20 all in.
Perfect and cost-effective solution for this small cabinet. I prefer a 2-player bartop or full-size cabinet. However, if one have no friends to play with, this modded countercade would do it! Thanks for the video!
Glad to see you are more enthusiastic about the countercades. On the Pac Man countercade review and mod video, you were very down on the countercade. I've got an astroids on the way:)
I just bought the Miss Pacman countercade for 200$, not cheap, but came with a 200$ store credit, which means it was free!! This video was great, but 4 years old, I'll have to see what's out there now but this mod seems fairy plug and play, can't beat it!!
Going to do this build. Was wondering where you got the power switch and outlet strip? Also where can i see where you show wiring the buttons and how to handle sound?
What a fantastic question? Let’s sit back and see if Ralph will power switch on his eyes and fingers and finally answer. We can’t eat cereal with out the bowl Ralph!
Hey Ralph? Where is the link for the power switch thingy you made for the back? I’ve been to all these links and don’t see it. Also a link for a modded controller would be nice too. Or anyone else know? Where can I buy a kit or already modded friendly control panel? And controller and buttons. I have the Galaga machine so the controller is galagarbage limited. (Only moves left and right) Since this video is a year old? Does anyone know a good maker/seller of custom friendly boards for this Elf 415 or whatever the number is setup?
This video is 4 years old, so I would consider this data to be stale at this point. I would update it, but I honestly haven't remained current in the Arcade1up modding scene. I appreciate you letting me know though and thank you for watching.
Hey Ralph, long time watcher of this video, first time caller. My son and I haven been planning on doing this for awhile now. We’ve ordered and got most the parts. (Waiting on Elf 512 thingy) But now I’m worried, does this mod work on ALL countercades or only some? Also don’t see link to what we need to get/order the mod for the controller panel. Has anyone started making custom ones or kits since you posted this vid?
Im in the middle of building this and have non working controls when game elf is booted to menu. If i go to test menu and do the jamma io test everything is mapped correctly. Any ideas?
6:01 It seems like Galaga is visibly lagging with directionals--even visible sped up like that. Holy cow is that a bad sign. I was just complaining about a1up's galaga countercade doing it stock, and was looking for alternate uses for the thing--but this might even be worse. Is it the game elf doing it or the video board?
With the 60in1 (just want the classic 80th verticals which are playable with one button) it would work the same way? Because the 60in1 has VGA output, too. I already have Jamma Hardness and scanline generator here and these boards in the video are sold for like 10 Bucks on Ali.
So is there a way to take the Dig Dug board in the countercade and transfer it to a fullsize arcade1up now? Would be cool to be able to put that board in say a full size Galaga arcade1up just to change it up for a bit?!?
No that would be a different change - The countercade PCB for is set at the resolution of the 8" screen and can not be changed so will not run on the higher resolution that the 17" screen uses - so will not run on the stand up cab - would need to be able to change the config files on the PCB ( might be something that can be done eventually)
Such a bummer....would love to play digdug on a upright cab....the pacman cocktail has it on it but really for $500 its not worth it...a Ms Pacman black friday exclusive with digdug on it would be amazing.....with digdug just a missed opportunity. Thank you both for responding
@@daviddeming1916 - WIth this driver board for $6 and a cheap 60 in 1 board (about $30 on Ebay or Aliexpress ) and a Jamma harnes (another $10) you could mod one of the uprights to have all of the games you mention - THat is what I intend to do with the Centipede cab I picked up for $75 ( though it will also need a joystick and the Control panel made for it ( about $5 worth of MDF and $5 worth of vinyl or $20 -$25 if I get the art printed for it ) - SO for about $150 I'll have a vertical cab with the 60 games.
What power supply are you using for the screen? The arcade 1up standard power supply? The specs on aliexpress either don't state the voltage or it does so in Chinese-encrypted
Curious if you could take the guts out of the recently purchased marvel superheroes countercade (got for $100) and move it into a diy full sized cab so I can use the pcb and such. Thoughts?
Very cool indeed. I wonder if Berry Berry Sneaky knows of any video boards that will fix the problem you ran into awhile back with using larger monitors with stock Arcade1up PCBs. I've been looking to upgrade one of my cabs, but the asking price on the Holland Computers monitor is not cheap. Either way, glad to hear this works for the countercades, because they're not a great value otherwise.
Just Did this Mod to my Pacman 1st Gen Countercade. I have the 2021 updated LCD converter board. Does this still need to Go on jumper "G" to have the correct resolution?
Ordered 2 video controllers from the link and neither worked... I did put the jumper on G also. One more thing, the video board has 2 green resistors not 1.
@@RetroRalph One more thing. where the Jumper goes on letter G, the board you are showing shows the letter H. The one I got only starts with the letter G.
@@DrPinball Old comment, I know, but I have the same issue... were you able to figure it out? My board also has A-G jumpers with no H, and it doesn't seem like any of them make the resolution work correctly. Mine also came with jumpers pre-installed to both A and B. When I remove them, that seems to do something, but I can't figure out the correct combination that makes it fill the 8" LCD properly...
Hi there, new to Arcad1up bu old to mods, electronics, games and arcades in general ehehheh the video board is not available anymore. Any link to a new version of it? Thanks
I purchased this video controller board and with emulation station it is zoomed up and I cant see the left side of screen. I tried all the resolutions and the overscan but nothing works any ideas?
Iggy Magoo Have you checked out my video on the jumper setting? Take a look at this video and I zoom close to it. ua-cam.com/video/Vi48fAZQPYQ/v-deo.html Let me know if this doesn’t help.
Yes but you need to make sure you purchase the display board I have links for in the video description, the boards used on the 17” Arcade1up displays won’t work for this 👍🏻
Is there any reason to buy the original Pac-Man countercade with two games over 40th anniversary Pac man which costs $25 more brand new? I’m curious if there is anything preventing this game mod on newer model.
I'm wiring up countercade controls which I'm sure are pretty much identical - is there a wiring diagram of where the ground and power go to each of the joystick and button inputs?
Not a fan of these priced too high, screen too small. But RR is definitely adding value with a clever mod. Thanks RR and Berry Berry! Love this community 👍
Bought all the same parts, for the same CounterCade, booted it up and the display is showing the games upside down and running Ms PacMan as soon as it starts up. Any ideas?
That’s the million dollar question that Ralph is doing busy singing and not answering. Wreck my day Raaaaaalph. C’mon man! Answer this already. Just some links to the parts would be nice of you buddy?
hi great video ralph. do you know if i can put a 3/4 aracde 1up centipede pcb in a centipede countercade will it work cause i want millipede in the countercade thanks
Retro Ralph - Does this board also work with the stand Up A1U systems 17" monitor ?? (IIRC BerryBerrySneaky had said it would and it's a cheaper option than the $30 board others recommend - though it does not have HDMI it could be a good alternative for those mods as well if it does esp. at $6 !
@ - THanks for the info - ordered one for the cab I was putting a 60 in 1 in since it uses VGA any way - was going to swap out the monitor with a refurbished PC monitor since it was cheaper than getting the $30 driver board but this makes more sense and at $5.85 is cheaper ! ( aliexpress has it on sale for $6.85 and also has a $1.00 off $5.00 purchase coupon right now so it was only $5.85 shipped ! )
I wish they would make a Final Fight and TMNT countercade, even if they are only one player. Or, the ability to swap boards and put a FF or TMNT board in an existing countercade. The normal 1ups are kind of big, I would rather have a countercade and swap boards to play different games. I think you can buy the boards separately from 1up or ebay. FF and TMNT/Time were among my most favorite arcade quarter munchers.
The game elf is effectively plug and play but will limit your expansion capabilities. It’s an easier solution than a Raspberry Pi IMO. Thanks for watching! Pi is great with the Mr. burns vertical image though. Both great options but this would technically be easier.
I would like to get one of these games that just plays pac man miss pac man and Donkey Kong If I have those 3 games I would be happy please please comment back and let me know how I could do that thank you very much for this video

Hey how did you get the sound to work for the game elf?
So have we found a way to hook the A1up board into one of these LCD controllers? That's what I REALLY need!
Boom a like for that intro song. That was bad ass bud
Thanks Bud, happy thanksgiving 🦃
It's indeed good cheap solution if you want to upgrade for more games :D
How do turn the screen 90°. ? New video board helps ? Explain please
