  • This falconry video discusses how to better understand the mentality of accipiters in falconry. Goshawks, coopers hawks, sharp shinned hawks, sparrowhawks and shikras are all species that display the mentality discussed in this video. Among falcons, buteos, eagles and owls, accipiters stand out as being some of the most intense species a falconer can work with. Understanding the way that accipiters think will help a falconer have far greater success.

I flew my first accipiter as a second year apprentice last year. I went for a family age coops. You're definitely correct on all counts. I've been lucky to be able apply all the knowledge that I gathered from multiple sources successfully. Zero aggression and a great hunter. I intermewed her and am enjoying another season with her. She's hunting above her trap weight this season!

It's an honor for me when The Shikra had mentioned, i have flown shikras, and i think they are the most nervous Accipiter than another.
This video helps me a lot. Good job and i wish you will make a special video about shikra.
    Much love!❤️

Another good one Ben. I enjoy your species comparison videos. Would love to see one comparing aplomados vs lanners. Seems like they have a lot in common but some noticeable difference. Thanks again

Agreed. My imprint sharpie was off the charts in reaction speed. Totally unreal. I flew a Merlin off the fist she was quick to react as well but probably only half as fast when a bird would get up.

Very good Ben, very well explained.McDermotts book is amazing, maybe a bit graphic for some, but doesn't sugar coat the reality of dealing with accipiter mentality.👍

I have to give you credit Ben, tackling the subject of accipiters. I flew them for a good part of 25 years, and I still don't know what makes them tick. The only advice I could possibly give is, if you want to fly an accipiter, start with a imprint goshawk. If you pick one of the other two first, you might get discouraged real fast. And other piece of advice, if you pick an eyas goshawk, you better have understanding neighbors, because 90% of them get vocal.
    Food for thought.🤔

Hey Ben! Have always loved the videos. Could you make a video on falconry abatement? The process of getting involved in it, the work they do, and best species for the job. Things of that nature!

I'm just a coincidental birdwatcher with lots of raptors (most the species in my state) resident or passing often through our subdivision, and I've always been very slow around the resident cooper's female and her mates and clutches in my back yard when they come perch nearby while I'm gardening. (More than 20 years now, female 2 or 3 in that time) I can't imagine how that must look to them, now. 😂 "Why did you just turn into a stone?"

Good to see a non-short video. I'm worried that this channel is starting to become more centered towards ticktock, 10 second tidbit, quick-cut videos.
Anyway... Are you going to be doing more trapping videos?

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  Рік тому +2

I will still be doing my weekly falconry videos. Just putting the shorts in between as well to try to boost the algorithm for people who are searching for falconry videos. John and I are also going to start up the falconry podcasts again, and I will start adding camelid training videos too.
The shorts is just an experiment to see if it leads to a broader reach with my regular full length videos. I promise to never make this channel just be shorts.

Oh yes and trapping videos will be forthcoming. It has been soooooo hot here that trapping has been ineffective until now. So my friends and I are finally shooting trapping footage.

I've used the words "clock speed" in the same way at times.
"Caffeinated" or "hyper-caffeinated" or "the most caffeinated birds of prey" might be descriptive or evocative.
"The Christopher Walkens of the bird world" has been used.
I like "the psychotic loose cannons of the bird world."
