Emil Gilels berührt mich immer wieder zutiefst. Für mich der größte Pianist des 20. Jahrhunderts.

The sound Gilels gets from the piano is like no other.

Lovely Gilles and his great sound always will be the best through the cencerys!
    Bravo Szell!!

Gilels was my idol and this represents an excellent collaboration that he had with Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. They did concertos 1-5 and it was brilliant. He was able to show emotion and technical prowess. This is a Gilels that is more matured and able to take time out to enjoy the music--not pressured to produce for propaganda reasons showing the troops why Russia was at war. He was a lovely man also. The Steinway is beautiful and he brings out its greatest attributes, the brilliance, depth, base and gorgeous sound. His upper trills are like glistening icicles. So beautiful.
    Thank you for this post.

In 1944 Gilels was “strongly encouraged” to perform in the open air to Soviet troops, sometimes during the raids in 1944. Why? What for? To boost morale was the usual explanation. That is pure propaganda.

What a rear, incredible unison between pianist and orchestra! No rushing or catching up! Just listening each other.
Some find 2nd part too slow, but this is reminder of the true meaning” slow down, stop and smell the roses!”

Emil Gilels was certainly one of the top pianists of the XX century. George Szell and his Cleveland orchestra were among the best as well. The combination was superb; the series of 5 Beethoven piano concerti are at the very summit, together with Arrau, Backhaus, Richter, Kempff, and a few others. The relatively slow tempo of this 1968 recording allows for a more meditative, introspective feeling. The sadness of the andante is overwhelming.

The orchestra and the rendering of the work by the peerless Gilels are profoundly reflective. A mirror on our perplexity and a consolation in suffering. Gilels has such perception and grace. Such patience and forgiveness

Giant, loud Steinway. Bright. I adore Mr. Gilels. The finest Beethoven #4 ever. Szell's taskmaster self with Gilels' inventive, always sound first spirit self, makes for the perfect partnership.

Any list is surely far from being complate without Wilhelm Backhaus, Karl Bohm & Wienner Symphoniker from 1967. This is IT. The benchmark for any interpretations of this splendid piano concerto so far and no mistake.

Definitely. The Zimerman + Bernstein recordings are pretty well known so certain snobs will always consider them too mainstream to admit liking them, but Zimerman is undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists on record. Everything he touches is gold. Same goes for Gilels.

Been visiting ALL Gilels pc 4 recordings on the Tube.... and there's quite a few. ( I think it can be safely said that Gilels OWNS this concerto.)
THIS recording, which I have on CD, is WAY too laid back! Was Gilels, or Szell, into the Vodka on this one?
The Giles/Sanderling recording, horrific technology..... that's where the action is!

You are so right. I have never heard another individual play this as he does bringing out all its beauty and depth. Most pianists avoid this concerto as did I, until I heard him perform it. Beethoven gave the pianist the real highlight here. Gorgeous. And Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra collaborate so well on this that it is the gold standard.

      Agreed.on being too laid back.
      For contrast, there is Perahia/Haitink/Concertgebouw.

Bloody Germans, i have to admit it : You are the gods of music. But the Russians soloists are the best interpreters of your masterpieces.

There isn't anything that surpasses the second movement in this interpretation, it should have been sent in a space capsule to aliens as an introduction or buried inside the pyramid as a legacy for future generations.

Wow, this is SLOW. This is perhaps the slowest interpretation of Beethoven 4. 😝😝😂🍷🍷🍷🍷
    The fastest interpretation?: Kovacevich-Davis; Serkin-Toscanini.

It depends on the artist's feelings, doesn't it? Zimerman & Bernstein 1989 played for almost as long. The difference was that Zimerman used a different Cadenza than Gilels did.
