  • "The Ukraine Crisis and Europe’s Future: A New Cold War?"
    About the Speaker:
Dr. Roland Paris is a professor of international affairs and the director of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, an associate fellow of Chatham House, and a former senior adviser on foreign policy to the Prime Minister of Canada. His research on international relations has won numerous awards and citations, including the Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order. He also regularly analyzes foreign affairs for national and international media.
    About the talk:
Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has upended the post-Cold War security order in Europe, which had been based on the assumption that Russia did not pose a direct threat to the peace of the continent. What does the invasion portend for Europe’s future and for relations between “the west” and Russia? Are we heading towards a new Cold War, or something else? And what does it mean for Canada?
The class is free and open to the broader UBC community, but participants are asked to register in advance. The Masterclass will be moderated by Dr. Lisa Sundstrom, Professor in the UBC Department of Political Science.
