  • Hey all,
    Quick review of the DRZ400SM
The Cons list is short but essentially its a little heavier than some of its racing competitors that are converted for road use and its slightly down on power but bearing in mind its power upgrade list is endless and its easily the cheapest to maintain and own... We can't recommend this bike enough, reliable, tough as nails, a tonne of fun, bang for buck one of the best motorcycles available, ride one for yourself!
    Thanks for watching, enjoy!

6 foot and about 5 10, it'd suit anywhere from 5 6 ish beyond without lowering the seat

Hey man, I've just put a deposit down on a 2014 drz400 - what mods do you suggest I start off with? I've heard people recommend the 3x3 mod on the airfilter... what do you think?
    Great vid by the way.

Hey mate, cheers for that, I'll assume you're getting the supermotard version? yep the 3x3 mod is a good place to start, it's not hugely noticeable by itself but it sets you up well for other mods, this one has an exhaust that has been opened up and the 3x3 mod, the two together make it feel a lot less restricted as far as air flow goes but to really get into making it perform the flat slide 39mm or 41mm carb is the first really noticeable step, then hot cams will take you up to the power of the enduro model or possibly a little over with the 3x3, a full exhaust system, something like the fmf powerbomb and power core with the larger header will help plenty as well, from there you can go on to big bore kits and better cams but the best thing about these bikes is the reliability and the more you try to squeeze out of it the less durable they are likely to become, this doesn't apply to the carb, exhaust and air box mods, more so the choice of cams and big bore kit, but keep that in mind, they are an awesome bike and they are as popular as they are for a good reason, well built and good balance of power and reliability, if you want a super fast motard that will handle exceptionally well the DRZ isn't the bike for the task, but those bikes need an oil change every 7 seconds and a much tighter service schedule, personally we'd rather be riding than servicing and the DRZ is king for that, also consider how often you will be doing high speeds as a gearing adjustment can do wonders for response and acceleration, enjoy!

My 2020 came with Excel wheels stock. I wonder what year they started putting them on?

Hi mate, they will sit happily on 110kmh all day they just rev a bit, you can always change the gearing if you do a fair bit of highway but on the sm model which has taller gearing they are okay as is, if you do mostly big tours I wouldn't recommend them, it's not what they're made for, they are a great all rounder and will do a big tour if needed but there are bikes more suited to that job if thats your primary purpose. you'd need to abuse the hell out of it to make a drz motor go boom man, they're tough as nails.
