    It’s not always about whos the best, it’s about the impact they made for their team, that guy didn’t have a lot of points but it’s not always about that, nowadays people seem to be blinded by the best and forget about players like that guy, who obviously did enough in other aspects of his game to improve the team all together . And that’s ultimately what a jersey retirement should be.

      I couldn’t agree more. Players are judged on their points now instead of their impact and play. Like for example, the James Norris trophy is given to the D man with the most points( mainly PP) instead of the D man with the most blocked shots, or 2 on 1s that are shut down, or the D man with the highest clears and exits from the D zone. Anyways, excellent point made!

    Sens fan chiming in.
    Neil is 1 of 32 players in NHL history to be a one-team guy and play over 1,000 games for that team.
    You don’t see many energy, tough guys play that many games any more. They tend to bounce around from team to team, looking for their next contract. He had opportunities to get traded or sign elsewhere as well, and always refused and wanted to remain in Ottawa (famously turned down a PTO with Montreal and just chose to retire instead lol).
    I feel like a lot of the people online that are trashing the decision are younger fans that don’t remember Ottawa in their heyday. Neil was a big part of those teams. He also has done so much in the Ottawa community and is still in the city to this day.
    This isn’t a guy going into the HoF, it’s a Sens legend that is being honoured by an individual team. Ottawa doesn’t have the 100year history to pull from like Toronto or Montreal, so the criteria for jersey retirement isn’t the same.
    There are similar players that have jerseys retired as well, just happened awhile ago. Ken Daneyko wasn’t a star player for Jersey, but he was a part of 3 Cup wins and was a fan favourite. Keith Magnuson played less then 600 games for Chicago and had less then 150 points, but was a leader and fan favourite at the time.
    End of the day, other fanbases or teams opinions don’t matter. Sens fans know he’s a legend of the team and community, and that’s all that matters.

      Market size or age of the franchise has nothing to do with it. In it's 106 years, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had 2 players to play over 1000 games exclusively for the franchise: Ron Ellis and George Armstrong.
      That's the same amount that the much smaller and younger Ottawa Senators franchise has: Chris Phillips and Chris Neil.

      @@deltagolavista1 market size definitely matters, think about how many stars left small markets to go to Big one, honestly I’d list them but I’d be here forever, and the smaller the market the more impact players have on their team, like if Toronto sucks they have the jays, raptors, and maybe even the argos to care about instead. But in small hockey markets it’s that team and that’s it. It’s more likely to notice a player staying longer if he’s on a small market where he can make more money somewhere else, obv Chris Neil isn’t a prime example but I’m sure if he played for the leafs or rangers his whole career he wouldn’t be hanging in the rafters.

    Jersey retirements is for the fans, there are no standard requirements for getting your number retired. Retiring the number of players who are not in the Hall is not uncommon. When the sabres and Ottawa had their little rivalry In his Era he was always a guy you kept your eye on. He was a force. I think its cool to retire a jersey for something other than points.

    I have always thought Detroit should retire Probert before Federov, Zetterberg, Datsyuk.. I think its wrong that we gave 24 to Chelios and now Suter.

    @HistorysRaven Рік тому

    So, in terms of points, no. But he played in Ottawa his entire career. That's important. That says something. Especially 16 years. You don't stay at a team for 16 years if you aren't important. Something like that is rare. As in only 121 players have played for a single team for at least ten years.

    Two seasons with Brian Murry. Murry put Neil at the front of the net for rebounds and tips. And in both he had 15 goals by Dec. He could of had a lot more points. Just not his role

    If Neil gets his jersey retired, then Holmstrom of Detroit should too. Do you know the amount of punishment he had to endure from his opponents and the refs, while working in his office?

  • @nc8507
    @nc8507 Рік тому

    I thought it was really cool that he got his number retired. I had no idea about it until I saw it on TSN. However, being a Habs fan I did see him play quite a bit. He always played with his heart on his sleeve and was incredibly loyal to the franchise.
    I also think given the number of teams the vast majority of players will never win a Stanley Cup. Therefore, the criteria to get a jersey retirement has to evolve and it is nice to see teams embrace their most iconic players even without that silverware.
    I think its well deserved and I also enjoy seeing a scrapper getting recognized for his status. Well deserved Chris Neil!

    I've always thought retiring a number was kind of stupid. Honoring them is awesome. Honored numbers could be reserved for special players. But, for nobody to ever get to wear that number again is ridiculous. Honor the player, but he doesn't own that number. What if someone else can represent it just as well in the future?

    People are so confused about this? Only people that have zero understanding and knowledge of the Senators and their history. It may be different than your typical retirement, but based on what he meant to the team and the length of time he was there, it 100% makes sense. I’m a Devils fan BTW.

    Raising a number is about any player the franchise wishes to recognize for their contributions to the organization. Full stop. Don't understand that gatekeeping as to what those contributions are.

    Dude CHRIS PHILLIP’S jersey is retired. He had far less of an impact than Neil in his prime. And the other guy other than Allie is a dude who died in a car accident a hundred years ago. Penguins also have a retired number for a kid who died the same way. Jersey retirements are about respect not skill.

    Your argument applies to Hall of Fame it does not apply to jersey retirements.
    A player who embodies the team, played a majority if not all his career for this team, poured his blood sweat and tears for that team. Skill and points is a nice added bonus. Loyalty is more important than anything. Case in point, Sergei Fedorov, his jersey SHOULD be retired by the Wings, but some of his decisions were contradictory to the benefit of the Wings Franchise
