I read Albert Speer's account of his years being held in Spandau Prison. Spandau Prison was known for extremely strict conditions for the Nazi prisoners. Speer referred to one especially strict American officer who showed no leniency toward the prisoners. That officer was the camp commandant Capt. Ronald Speers of Band of Brothers fame. He was a well respected leader during the war, saw lots of combat, and had seen the German dirty work at Dachau. He hated the Nazis.

Since crime and punishment often start out with a relatively competent individual, they included the information that the Langberg prison was built from 1905 to 1908, when my grandparents were born. My grandmother was in a German family who was sent to the United States, and her father; a butcher, died of blood poisoning, but he already looked like he had blood poisoning. Her mother died of hypertension. It's hard for us to get organized after those things happen but the Internet offers a lot. Thank you for this blog. Was the failure to catch criminals at Nuremburg because there wasn't a place to house them? Today, there are stories of doctors who didn't know what they were getting into.

At the very start of this prison's use as execution site for war criminals they had not yet built a gallows in the courtyard behind the main building. So those first condemned were simply shot. Then after the gallows was built the ones after that were hanged. Most ended up in the cemetery across the road from the prison unless their family claimed the body. This info comes from a clip where an American narrator gives a tour of that cemetery--- Spottinger cemetery-- I believe it was called.

7.09 During the last clip of an execution, it is interesting to note that the executioner was Johann Reichardt, the German chief executioner. He laways wore a bow-tie and long-tailed coat to perform his office. He was a stickler for dignity and correct procedure during the executions he performed. He used the guillotine for all his executions before the end of the war. He learned about the measured drop method of hanging prisoners from Albert Pierrepoint, but was not allowed to practise it during these executions. However he always placed the noose to the left, in order to ensure that the neck was broken, even though he was not able to use anything other than the standard drop. The American executioners placed the noose behind the neck.

I've always wondered why Mr.Pierrepoint wasn't appointed to execute the major Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg, given that the Yanks hideously botched them
and given Mr.Pierrepoint's proven record of 100% efficiency. I suppose it must have been an American ego thing.
In fact, Mr.Pierrepoint, when he carried out executions for the US Army at Shepperton Prison, was always uneasy at the length of the procedure. It took several minutes. (see 1)
Also, I think the American method of hanging has to be seen in two contexts.
      1) The Americans 'have their own way of doing things'...I mean, blimey..the electric chair? the gas-chamber, for crying out loud!!?....I hope I've made my point!
      2) When USA expanded and bullets cost money, the way miscreants were dispatched was by being strung up from the nearest tree.
Everything rough and ready; the justice and the rope.
