The pilots rushed to land as soon as possible, leading to errors in judgment that included the crew's failure to complete the airline's pre-landing checklist before descending. This was a crucial event in the accident chain, as the crew overlooked multiple critical landing systems on the checklist. The flight crew also failed to arm the automatic spoiler system, which automatically moves the spoiler control lever, and deploys the spoilers upon landing. The pilots also failed to set the plane's automatic braking system and the landing flaps. And with the reported winds exceeding the MD-82's 20-knot (23 mph; 37 km/h) crosswind limit for landing in reduced visibility on a wet runway, Captain Buschmann still did not abandon the aircraft's approach into Little Rock, deciding to continue the approach to 4R instead. With so many red flags, it's a no brainer that the pilot still proceeded with landing the aircraft. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the probable causes of this accident were the flight crew's failure to discontinue the approach when severe thunderstorms and their associated hazards to flight operations had moved into the airport area, and the crew's failure to ensure that the spoilers had extended after touchdown. Captain Buschmann paid the ultimate price with his life, but too bad he also took 10 innocent lives with him, not to mention the dozens more who were seriously injured, some of whom who are permanently disabled.
They overshot the runway and slipped in the rain. Landing sideways and during circumstances that company policy does not allow. Not the company’s fault, they clearly had it in their policy that that model airplane can not land in those circumstances.
Minor point: Spoilers are armed not turned on 😁 Crew is split between pilot flying and pilot monitoring but ultimately the captain is the commander of the aircraft.
This incident has Greg Feith the most animated about the mistakes made by the crew. He scolded the pilots and American Airlines. Of course, looking back is 20/20. I feel for the passengers. Reduce Get Home Itis.
Yes but then youd have ti stay in the air and fly through the storm. They were trying to get on the ground as fast as possible. If they go to a different airport, they have to fly longer.
Yeah, the pilots obviously made a grave mistake by not deploying the spoilers among a number of others, I get it. We've all been there one way or another. The pilot lost his own life over that. I guess he'd wish he had a 2nd chance for himself and all the passengers, who perished with him. Can't help but ask the question, who built a massive catwalk in the direct line of the runway ? This particular tragedy is a little bit more than just pilot error. We all need to learn our lessons from this (and all other tragedies).
It seems that what upsets Renee Salman the most is that her illusion of guaranteed 100% safety was shattered. She did not lose any member of her family and yet the next day could not believe life was going on (her words) as normal for the rest of the world. Every single day on every continent, in every country, people face life threatening events. Some times they survive some times they don't. But the fact that she went through a life threatening event with her two children has shattered her little world of 100% safe 100% of the time. That safety is an illusion. There are no guarantees in life, life is dangerous. Several years ago I saw on our local news a small plane from the municipal airport had crashed in a neighborhood. There were two casualties, the pilot, and a man sitting in his living room watching TV drinking a beer. You would think your own living room is the safest place in the world you could be. Life is dangerous, there are no guarantees.
If the actors are portraying what was said exactly the way they said it, with the tones and inflections in the voice, it really sounds like you had an insecure Captain and a cocky co-pilot wanting to land at this airport. That is definitely a recipe for disaster. The Captain should have decided to go to their alternate. The co-pilot should have been pay attention to his job. It sounds like they disobeyed their companies regulations also. I can't imagine what they were thinking. It is sad that those 11 people died, because the pilot and co-pilot may have not enter the right career. This is truly sad.
It suck for pilots cause they’re people pleasers they wanna get you there as fast as possible as most people are impatient, but that should never outweigh safety. Depending on their fuel surplus they could’ve potentially went into a holding pattern while the storm passes through. Usually the more intense the storm the shorter the duration. At the very least the conditions could’ve improved for them
A sad situation that could have been easily avoided. 😒😔The fact that the captain seemed to lose his situational awareness and the airport was very disturbing especially when the copilot told him where it was. They messed up their checklist and both were tired, which led to mistakes. The illegally fixed lights at the end of the runway was the icing on the cake and ended that plane. So sad. 😢
MAN! It is sad to see that the company valued getting payed over the lives of those people! Never rush through something! Take your time and do it right!
@33moneyball too bad...they would still be here to be mad. There's always another flight...I'd rather have a flight canceled than to put my life in jeopardy!
Airlines that cancel flights and divert to other cities for safety, more than other airlines, have a better safety record and they also lose passengers to the other airlines eventually going out of business. So many of you "armchair pilots" are quick to attack airlines & pilots when a crash happens but you would also be the first person to tell your family and friends "We are never flying that airline again. Other airlines made it through that storm. But noooo they were afraid of a little storm. We'll never fly that airline again."
I have watched dozens of these, rarely is it the plane, more often bad mechanics doing things wrong or not carrying out a repair that is needed, or bad piloting.
This had to have been terrifying!!! As a passenger this had to be scarier than the plane with the stuck landing gear watching themselves land on live TV!!! Right? Yes I’m right
17:15 No. Airlines pilots make their money sitting on autopilot most of the time. These treacherous landing weather scenarios come only once in a while... /In the Newtonian World.
They need to make it a law that you should not be a professional and not know what the hell you going at but still try to go the way you know you can't go at because you don't know where you're going at you should have turned the hell around and went somewhere else and landed that bad boy and just delayed the situation but the reason why you probably didn't do that because of them damn people you work for they're greedy they think about money more than they think about their life of a person

The fact that American Airlines refused to comment in this episode speaks volumes.
Simply adhering to the advice of legal counsel. Why is that a mystery, especially in the United States of Litigation?
Objection!
Well USAir bought out American, so I wouldn’t think they’d have any need to comment. They just kept the American name.
Speaks no volume. A television production has motives,no Corporation in their right mind would voluntarily participate in a potential liability trap.
Fun fact: The actor who played the first officer is Stephen Bogaert who's also this show's narrator on discovery channel.
he was also in American psycho
Why did ATC allow them to take off? WTH? From the ATC and pilots refusing to wait is absurd!
The Pilots had a major case of get-thereitis
They overshot the runway and slipped in the rain. Landing sideways and during circumstances that company policy does not allow. Not the company’s fault, they clearly had it in their policy that that model airplane can not land in those circumstances.
But the company's responsible for what their employee's do on company ⌚
It was the company’s fault for allowing them to depart in the first place
Not turning on spoilers when landing was their final nail in coffin. I thought that was what co-pilot is there for to help the pilot with controls.
In the end the captain is responsible for any and all things that did or did not occur.
It is

🤣🤣🤣🤣. I love random George Costanza quotes.

My humble opinion is that the pilot didn't cancel the landing and go to a different airport to do so
Huge storm like that you'd think they'd circle away from the storm or land at another airport

Yes...runways need long overrun areas and nothing too close to the airport!
Those two pilots were nervous and acting like amateurs. I would have been nervous too.
When there is a Storm there will be a threat. Even if he is a experienced pilot. Only God can save them from crash.

Looking at the airport on Google maps they would've had a better survival rate on 22r no catwalk only rr tracks
