In the last 11 The Gypsy Queens have performed over 3000 gigs across the world without management, agent or set list, but their story begins over 15 years ago in Nice, France.
As individuals, the five members of the Gypsy Queens came to France in 1996, drawn by the rich and diverse busking scene that has given us artists from Edith Piaf to Madeleine Peyroux.
Performing along the restaurant terraces of Nice and playing to anyone and everyone they could in a town firmly rooted in the tradition of street musicians, they became ingrained in the same scene that Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot were learning their trades in.
Consisting of an Italian singer, a British double-bassist, a Mexican drummer, an American saxophonist and a Norwegian guitarist -- the Gypsy Queens decided to form a band in 2001.
Whilst still busking on the streets wherever they go, they have performed for Bono and Elton, for Robert De Niro and Chris Martin, for David Beckham & Prince Harry, REM and Quincy Jones.
Deciding to build on their success they have enlisted the help of Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Melody Gardot) on their debut album and together they are recording their debut album in Los Angeles, with features from Gerry Beckley (America), Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills and Nash), and their old counterpart Madeleine Peyroux.
"Our repertoire is so big we could start at 10 at night and go on, easily, until 4am. Give us a shot of Captain Morgan and we'll be ready to go all over again. We know that us making a record is a risk and that everything is about to change for us. Even songs we've performed 10000 times will change, but the music we play is eternal."
