I don't listen to The Midnight anymore, so I'm good. But Gunship is on my playlist with a couple of other bands or artists that recreate the sound of the 80s (e.g., Miami 1984, Droid Bishop, Le Cassette, Free Weights, and others).
The video reminds me of Zdzisław Beksiński Polish painter. Alot of Death Metal bands use his artwork. Two favorite music genres. Death Metal and Synthwave. Weird combo, but I am me!
I think it is absolutely intentional that the song crescendos into nothing. It just builds up and then ends. With the music video being about "what happens in the afterlife", I think it makes even more sense because in reality, we don't really know what happens after death, and so the song building up without having a "climax" is very fitting. Definitely one of my favorite songs!
Gunship is so incredibly creative, both musically and visually when it comes to their videos. The have a distinct and layered sound that occupies its own space in not just the synthwave genre, but outside of it. A band that deserves attention anytime they release new music. GUNSHIP has a way of tapping into something inside of us... this one takes that to a new level. When you watch this video it's definitely an experience that stays with you, again it's a song that has grown on me with multiple listens and the video puts it on a different level artistically (they put this out when AI image generation hadn't really been in the mainstream yet). Thanks for the great content once again!

Interesting. You and I both had the same reaction initially. It like teased it was going to have an EPIC climax after it built it up, but it just went soft again and the build up started again. I think it works for the content of the lyrics and after having heard it several more times, it's really been growing on me. But yeah, that first listen I was like wtf?! Where's the drop!?
In a weird way it kinda reminds me of some vibes that Tool would have in their symbolism and the lyrical styling, lotta deeper thought that went into the composition for sure, pretty dope all around.

You could really hear the influences of both bands and those razors were just....delicious.

A human made version of the music video would've been better. Now it's just too...AI uncanny valley meets hallucinatory waking nightmare, with extra fingers. Simpler would've been better and more "readable".
