Orchestral Buildups - 6 Levels
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 вер 2024
- In this video I'm going through 6 levels of orchestral buildups. Starting from something simple just using strings and slowly sneaking in the rest of the sections, brass, woodwinds and percussions. I try to create different levels of intensity in real time, from soft, to medium to loud.

Please consider making more of these 6 levels to orchestral buildups. This was incredibly insightful. Learned a lot in a space of 24 minutes.
Thanks! I’ve done a lot of this kind of stuff using a different format in my orchestration techniques series, particularly the early episodes have a more raw presentation with examples more similar to each other. I’m not sure if you’re new to the channel but I just thought I’d let you know.
@@MattiaChiappa I'm very new to the channel and can't thank you enough. Subscribed with notifications on.
after being continually discouraged by finding endless tutorials of no real value on YT, I stumbled upon this gold mine. You, sir, are a legend!! Thank you SO much. 💖
You’re welcome!
If I found your channel in my early studying orchestral music, I probably will get influence by your beautiful composing style. But now I still learn a lot from you, keep sharing a knowledge. Thanks Mattia
Thanks man!
Great video showing how proper orchestration makes a huge difference. Still diving into this subject and learning a lot by studying scores from other composers. This was very insightful, thank you for sharing!
I think one of the most crucial aspects of a good build-up is the orchestration it's based on. If it doesn't deliver any harmonic tension to begin with, just adding dynamics is probably not going to cut it: garbage in garbage out basically.
Very insightful to see you writing each part out and talking through the reasons behind why they’re there, thanks!
Always a pleasure to see a video from you popping up in my feed. And a great learning experience as well. Thanks for making these.
Thanks!
Dr. Chiappa, you never disappoint. Always fresh and clean orchestration techniques. I'm going to have BIG FUN scoring this one (for study purposes only). Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
Very very very instructive ! Thank you very much Mattia, you should definitely create more videos like this !
Professional and impressive! Redolent of the Columbia Pictures Jingle. Even the same pitch. 🙂
Awesome demonstration Mattia. I really enjoyed seeing you layer it one at a time. Makes sense.
Thanks!
3rd version to me is very powerful and elegant. Also the second to the last is also fantastic. Thank you so much for these wonderful insights on getting the most out of a virtual orchestra, You are a treasure!
Thanks Scott!
This is fantastic. Thank you.
Right! Yet another Mattia bookmark in my file for musical insights - impressive work! Thank you!
i only got into orchestral composition quite recently ,these videos are incredibly helpful and inspiring, so glad i found this channel,i keep seeing improvement in my work since i started watching these .... i sound like a sponsored bot but its fucking true, keep up the amazing work !!
Thanks man, appreciate it!
A master of the craft as ever Matti. Your videos always massively inspire me. It's a shame when I come to act on that inspiration, I quickly remember that I lack most of the skill to pull it off 😂 But you give me hope my friend!
Perseverance, sweat and tears my friend! Don’t give up and all the sacrifices will pay off eventually
Very helpful ! thank you Mattia - Building Run and arpeggio will be great too !
Thanks!
Excellent Matias! ..this path-of being able to build a complete idea through a simple sketch ... it is wonderful! ..and honestly what we most need in the coherent management of an orchestra! ...Thank you in advance !!
Thanks!
So much great stuff to take away here. But I have to say, the single biggest epiphany moment for me was... recreating the harp gliss via the keyboard, then letting setting them to a scale automatically. Historically, I would manually add each midi note of the scale, then manually adjust the timing or 'curve' to get the feel right, and it was always such a laborious and tedious process. Such a simple trick in hindsight but a good one. Thank you!
Awesome video as usual. I get a John Williams vibes from this video.
Thanks!
much appreciated Mattia... always helpful revelations and inspirations on a variety of aspects of making things sound better!!.
Thanks!
Really good. You can create an original movie mood with any detail. So many variations on one topic. Bravo.
Thanks!
Great great tutorial!!
Mattia, im not sure if im said that before but i would like to say that Your channel and Yours videos of course at (least for me) is definitly one of the best if not the best (comoser/orchestration) kind of channel. This one is fantastic as usuall. If i may i would love to ask You to make video something like this one, about how to create "realistic" runs (strings, woodwinds and harps) That would be fantastic. Anyway as i say im always looking for for Your next video. Greetings from Poland
Thanks man, really appreciate it
I love the six levels approach. Please do more!!!!
Very inspiring and helpful Mattia! Your mockups are very convincing. Hope you keep producing great content like this.
Great stuff. Thanks. Very James Horner type sound ❤️
Thanks!
Your contents always make me happy. I'm so proud of being your subscriber. Thanks a lot Mattia.
Thanks!
It is a great art to explain complex things clearly and understandably. As always, very well done! Thank you, Mattia! :) Greetings from Salzburg, Blago
Thanks!
That was absolutely fantastic!🎉
I will be coming back to this video! Very helpful and insightful, thank you!
Thanks!
I'm speechless !
Great approach to build it up, piece by piece. Thanks!
Thanks!
Fantastic sound Mattia - beautiful economy and balance!
Thanks!
Very nice Sony Columbia Music Logos orchestration. Thanks
Thanks!
"Capture record" shortcut for the WIN 😉 Fantastic as always man, great insights!!
P.S. Your mock-ups are sounding phenomenal!!
Capture recording in my sleep 😂
@@MattiaChiappa 😂
thank you Mattia, I really learned a lot form this video.
You’re welcome, glad it’s helpful!
Very interesting, Mattia.
Thank you
Thanks!
Grande Mattia!
This is really good stuff Mattia. I learnt a lot thorough this video. I would request a video where you go through some music theory about how you harmonize a melody, choose chords for a melody maybe?
Thanks!
Thanks Mattia for your videos! I really like how you write the harp part at 12:13. I have to check on my Cubase the scale feature too.
Thanks!
Great video Mattia!
Thanks!
Thanks Matt, great video
Thanks!
Wow! That was enlightening.
Thanks!
This is great! Thank you so much, Mattia!
I am learning orchestral programming, and this is gold to me. Going to subscribe right now.
I was just wondering, I couldn't help but notice probably around the third iteration from the end, that the master output level was so healthy with lots of headroom, even with a lot of instruments playing loudly with their track volume level at unity. Are you using any gain plugin on those tracks? How can you maintain this headroom with such loud performance?
Thanks
Most libraries are quiet by default and I never had issues with gain staging. I have a gain on the output I can use to boost or lower the volume if it’s too hot
@@MattiaChiappa thanks you so much bro.
One last thing, I know there must be a lot of library producers out there. So far I’m loving Spitfire products. I also found about Native Instruments libraries and they are amazing too. Just today I found out about Eastwest Studio’s libraries and was wondering if you had tried them.
I hit "Subscribe" immediately.
This is amazing!
Thanks!
LOVE THIS!!!
Thanks!
Awesome work!!! what library do you use for percussion?
BBC
Muito bom!
Hi Mattia, at 17:41 what midi cc's are you using besides the modulation? The one midi cc you raise with the crescendo and then release on the decrescendo and leave it at the top. Which one is that? As always, this channel is gold.
Hey! What you see me using is modulation, expression and vibrato. The fader I leave at the top is vibrato.
For horns and trumpets, are you using multiple solo patches? Edit** I see now that it’s sample modeling brass. Cool! :)
I was wondering how to explain your cadens. I love it, but I don't quite understand why it works so well. It's basically a II-V resolving in a major chord on the mediant. How would you call this last chord? Dmi-G7-E(#11). Could it be III major, or a kind of borrowed V from A minor (which is the parallel scale of C)? I cannot really explain it from the scale of E, there is not one substitute of G7 (Bb7, Db7, E7) that can be a dominant, and Dminor has no real place in E as well. How would you call this one? Love your tutorials. Thanks!
Mmm you’re probably overthinking it. It’s basically a 2 5 3 in C major. With 5 being a dominant chord you can get away with a lot dissonance, so I used a Dm7b5/G or G11(b9). The last chord is a false cadence but I wouldn’t think in those terms. The musical phrase I played, naturally lands on a chord tone of E major but I could have as easily modulated to a different key just by using the same pivot note as long as it’s still a chord tone of whatever chord I’d pick.
@@MattiaChiappa That makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Hello Mattia! Very helpful, but one thing could make things even better. Please identify the instrument and articulation you are using. I'm having trouble figuring out what horn you were using in Level 3.
It’s sample modeling horns. It’s a performance library with only one articulation
What camera and lens are you using Mattia? Awesome content as always
Thanks! I use a Sony
a6400 with a sigma 30mm f1.4. The overhead is just my iPhone 12 camera.
Wait, am I the only one who thought about the Columbia Pictures Intro when listening to this sketch?
I mean yeah, it’s a similar kind of progression! You’ll find in lots and lots of music not just the Columbia pictures intro. Even that little melodic cell at the end is in countless scores.
@@MattiaChiappa yeah, this cell made me think of Columbia Pictures, but your work here also sounds unique and distinctive. To be honest, I used this cell several times in my music too :)
Sounds great! What brass library are you using? I saw the Cinematic Studio series strings and woodwinds, but didn't see what you used for the brass.
Thanks, it’s sample modeling horns and trumpet
Excellent video Matatia, thank you!
Are you using BBCSO here?
It’s a mix of bbc, css and sm
Thanks, sounds great!@@MattiaChiappa
Hi Mattia. I wanted to ask about your controller if you don’t mind. Which SL are you using, and do you still enjoy it? Thank you and I enjoy all your videos.
You mean my keyboard?
@@MattiaChiappa yes, sorry...but I noticed in your other video it's the Sl Grand...how do you like it? Wondering how the new TP/400 will be against the old TP/40
Yes, we’ve chatted about this a few months back remember? I still like the keyboard 😉
@@MattiaChiappa Oh man.. I thought so, but I have been going nuts lately with so many options that I forgot...I'm sorry.
😂 no worries man. I really don’t like keyboards but this one is alright. I love the matte feel of the keys, hate the stickpads
Mattia Chiappa Do you have perfect pitch or relative pitch?
I have pretty good relative pitch but nothing compared to when I was hardcore into studying and transcribing
@@MattiaChiappa You can see it right away, when you play you hit all the notes. I can't do that.)
I struggle with percussion as I only have the native instruments symphony ones and they don't have mod wheel functionality for crescendos. And the timpani rolls just stop dead. It always needs fiddling and tweaking. :(
May be an annoying question, but which percussion libraries are you using here?
For percussion I’m using Spitfire BBC
@@MattiaChiappa Thankyou. Also, how do you like the Studiologic keyboard? Are the hammer keys nice enough to play? I'm looking into an 88key keyboard and have my eye on this one.
I don’t like any midi keyboard. This one is just ok, I guess gets the job done. I can’t express how much I hate the design with the sticks poking out from the left. They’re too short for me and haven’t used them not even a single time. I love the mat feel of the keys, it’s worth the buy just for that.
Level 7 would be adding choir haha
😂
Great video! Do you use CC 11?
Yes I do
Do you have the chord name? It is kinda hard to follow your hand...somthing d minor, G major then E major?
I used these chords Dm Dm11 G11 G Dm7b5\G Eadd9 (#11 in the horns). I used the upper structures triads to create suspensions so Dm11 is basically a C/D and G11 is an F/G. That last chord before resolving could easily be called G7b9(sus4), but you know semantics. It’s just a 2 5 progression resolving to 3 major. Use all the extensions you like and you’ll still get similar results
@@MattiaChiappa thankssss
What horns do you use? thanks!
It's sample modelling horns
@@MattiaChiappa thanks!
