Very good description of that system. I bet there were lots of drivers who wondered if their car had “Gremlins” when the gas pedal started pushing back at them! 😎😁🤣 Still love that blue color…and C4’s are to the moon! Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to you as well, buddy👍. I'm glad your enjoying the videos, I'm having fun making them. It's like having my friends hang out at the shop with me while I'm wrenching on the cars.
I'll tell you what, I haven't dared to turn the system off until I am way more experienced at driving this C4. It totally saved my bacon the other day! I was approaching a traffic signal and had a green arrow for a LH turn on to a larger three lane boulevard, was going 30-35 in 2nd gear and got on the gas too early while making the turn. Even though it was dry, it was pretty cold and the back just let go-- phewww-- for a split second I wasn't sure where I was going to end up but ASR swooped in and saved it.
Hey buddy, you have now experienced what I call the "rubber band" effect. Something about the design of the C4 suspension makes it highly unstable in sharp low speed cornering moves if you goose the throttle midturn. Luckily the ASR was engaged, or you could have found yourself in the opposite direction facing oncoming traffic. Saw your email from a few weeks back, just been crazy busy lately as usual. Glad you are able to enjoy the car. Have a Merry Christmas!
@@VetteSource Absolutely I am so glad that ASR saved my butt! Thank you I truly have been enjoying driving it around even though I only drive it once a week or so and I need to get the fuel pump situation worked out--its going into the shop later this month. For sure, it makes you thing something has gone haywire with the throttle if you're not familiar with the system. That's a big reason all the auto manufacturers went to the drive by wire system. It's easier to control the throttle without the driver feeling like it's not working.
My 93 Vette “Service ASR” light always turns on after about 5 minutes of driving. It doesn’t appear to affect anything but is annoying. I have seen a couple videos referring to this option but no information as to how to get rid of this light being on all the time. I’m open to any information or steps to get rid of this warning.
Hey Ron, the Service ASR light is letting you know there is a fault in one of the components that make the system function. If you have access to a scanner, you'll be able to read the stored code and diagnosis further from there. All of the components of the ASR are fairly dependable, so I would do a visual check to make sure you still have a good connection at the wheel speed sensors and the ASR servo motor itself. Let me know what you find out and I can guide you from there.
If the Service ASR illuminates, either Spark Retard and/or throttle close down is being commanded by the EBCM. The EBCM commands the Service ASR light, thus one of the quick checks is your brake fluid level in the master cylinder. Low brake fluid will set Service ASR. If that is ok, scan your EBCM for codes. If no scanner use a paper clip on the OBD1 connector. IGN off, At OBD1 connector, Connect top row, right most pin with the bottom row, left most pin, now turn ign on. Display will be in center LCD speedometer. EBCM codes are 9 series, look in lower left of display - use Trip ODO or TRip to move to 9 series. Any codes will be displayed in Speedo LCD. Turn ign off to get out. Look up codes using internet search.
Riley, thanks for the detailed troubleshooting writeup. One question for you. Will the Service ASR light up if the EBCM is simply commanding activitation of the system? I could be misremembering, but I thought when the system was activated the "ASR active" light would illuminate first, and then if a fault was detected in one of the system components the "Service ASR" light would illuminate.
I just found out from this video that the Service ASR and ASR off should light up simultaneously. The ground wire from the lamp goes to a rely, which I think failed.
Thanks for the video, very informative. Since I have faulty rear wheel speed sensor s that are not coming out and hard to find. , This is why my service asr. Light comes on.?
It's possible yes. You will need to pull the specific codes utilizing a code reader or by using the diagnostic mode built into the cars electronics system to verify.
Not that I'm aware of. The multiple throttle cables all run through the ASR unit, so if they created a work-around, it's unlikely you would be able to find a cable that was the proper length to make the system functional again.
Auto will only have 4 cables on a 92/93, 94-96 is electronic auto and has no TV cable. That Bosch system was used on a couple other non GM cars. The ABS pump is very similar to the ones used on some Mercs. Possibly even interchangeable if you find the right one.

Tdy my service asr came on when I started the car to back out of garage. I did not let everything cycle like I normally do and just got in and turned key. When I restarted the light was off and the car drove just fine. Is the noise I hear cycling part of the asr when I energize the system prior to cranking ? Can you trip the service asr by not letting everything cycle or is this the indication of another impending issue? I did find this video very informative. I’ve often felt the peddle kickback when taking a hard right and merging with traffic even when I’m not “trying to get on it”. I thought it was some sort of Ackerman effect but know can see it’s the asr 👍🏼
An intermittent code flashing usually just means something wasn't communicating correctly at that particular moment. It doesn't really have much to do with how soon you drive off in the car, as the systems pretty much come on-line instantly. The pump cycling you hear is most likely from the ABS unit directly behind your seat. It may have detected a fault momentarily, but then the circuit behaved as intended. As long as the ASR/ABS light doesn't light up, you should be good.
@@VetteSource last month that did light up out of the blue under heavy acceleration while going up hill. Turned out I had low break fluid and tripped a sensor, since the ABS/ASR hasn’t come back.
So with the ASR light on, if you turn the system off by pressing the traction control button that on the left side of the upper dash, you won't have any drivable issues right? Just no traction control? Do I have that right?
What is the adjustment with the Allen wrench in the three key holes and then you do something with the cables is there any information on that...IS THERE ANY information on the keyhole adjustment with the Allen wrench in the FSM?..also my service ABS light is on?...any tips?? on what to check pls advise :^)
Marcus, I'm not aware of any keyhole adjustments to the ASR servo. From what I am remembering, the unit is to be serviced as an entire assembly and nothing about adjustment is mentioned in the FSM. Many times the electrically driven gear actuator will bind up, rendering the unit inoperable. I would recommend checking fuses and connections first, and seeing if you can rotate the geared part of the unit by hand. If it is stuck most likely the servo has failed. Let me know if those check out and I can send some further troubleshooting tips your way👍.
Marcus, I haven't seen that video, but the accelerator pedal and throttle body cable contain automatic adjusters, and as such aren't serviceable if they become loose or out of limits. The cruise control cable adjustment is handled as in past model years at the cruise control servo. Let me know if you need any other information.
How can I disengage Traction Control so that emissions testing can run it on rollers to do their thing. Depressed the button on and off, won’t disengage. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Been messing around with trac control off. Last night decided to peel out a parking lot and all i saw was curb. Luckily the parking lot was made for 18wheelers so it was wide enough to just barely get control of the car. Turned it back o ln and have left it on since😂 although its from the 90s it definitely has power
I have a question for ya I've done a complete tune up on my 94 LT1 New plugs wires distributor and it still seems.like there's a miss It sputters when you excelerate any suggestions
Hey William, at this point my first thought would be to take a closer look at the fuel system. Being an OBD 1 ECM software system, you have less real time data to work with but you can still do old school checks like static and dynamic fuel pressure, injector pulse verification, and individual spark plug condition. Let me know how it turns out👍.
Would it be easy to remove the whole ASR module and or permanently disarm. I had mine off and did some spirited driving.. over a bumpy road when I was getting on brakes, the car kept on accelerating .. scary moment
Not easy at all. Even though I consider the ASR system to be a nanny device, I have seen it save many a Corvette drivers butt when the car gets loose and heads for the nearest ditch or oncoming lane of traffic. Not a pleasant experience like you mentioned.
Sound like a 'vette knowledgeable person. Wish you lived near me because I have a sick '96 LT4. Just got it back from a shop that had a year and finally threw in the towel. They did get it running but after replacing the ECM, Optispark, and few other things checked it is still showing some codes and on the DIC it is showing check engine, ASR Off, and service ASR. While it will sit and idle I am afraid to drive it that it will konk out on the road.....lol
Hey Wayne, that's too bad. Sounds like you need to dig around for a shop that has some Corvette specific experience so that they can address some of what may be some wiring issues from your description. What part of the country are you in? I may have some contacts near you.
I have a92 c4LT1 when I turn the traction control off, and do a burn out or even a donut I’ll get about 5 seconds into it and then it dies and cause me to stall out…. What could that be you reckon?
My first thought would be a fuel supply problem. Under hard acceleration or turning maneuvers, the fuel will rush to the opposite side of the fuel tank, potentially starving the fuel pump of its fuel supply. To counteract this, the cars have a small plastic tray installed at the bottom center of the tank that the fuel pump/sending unit sits in. If that piece becomes dislodged, you can experience the problems you described.
random off topic question but does obd2 work for a 95 vet? I tried plugging mine it but kept saying "failed to connect" or something along the lines of that
The 1995 Corvette was kind of a mix between OBDI and OBDII. GM used the 1994/1995 Corvette and certain Cadillac and Oldsmobile models as test vehicles for the new OBDII system. They came equipped with the ECM, and I believe the OBDII connector, but much of the computer programming was not installed, so that's why you're having trouble connecting with your scanner. The first year for functionality was 1996.
@titoqwentezproductionz3406 use the paperclip method, I believe it's #4 and #12, directly above and below each other, then just watch the digital display for any codes... Easy peasy...
Hi Mario, yes there are two or three vacuum lines that feed directly into the cruise servo under the hood, and another one that connects to the brake pedal to disengage the system when you hit the brakes.
For sure, I think quite a few owners with proper driving experience turn it off. For the less experienced drivers, it can help with the "gotcha" moments on those wet rainy roads and unstable road surfaces.
Good evening young man. I wanted to thank you for the great videos that you provide and ask a couple of questions. First exactly which manual do you recommend. I have a base model 1996. Second, the previous owner ran this when it was hot. I think there is a crack in the head gasket. (White smoke out tailpipes smelling like antifreeze) What is your opinion on the use of Blue Devil to fix this problem. This car will not be raced or driven hard. 70 to 80 on interstate at most. Thanks and keep the videos coming please. TW Sanders
TW, thanks for the positive feedback, I greatly appreciate it👍. For your car, I would recommend investing in a Factory Service Manual and the 1996 Owners Manual. Both contain a wealth of information particular to your car, and can be purchased off eBay or Amazon for a minimal investment. As for the potential head gasket issue, I have never been a big fan of the chemical solution to a mechanical problem. I know some swear by it, and it can alleviate small problems in the short term. Unfortunately, it's basically kicking the can down the road, because eventually those heads will need to come off to replace the gaskets. That's when you'll get the nasty surprise of the mess the head gasket sealers leave inside the block. Let me know if you need anything else, nice talking with you.
Moto Guzzi started ABS braking. The Service ASR and ASR OFF come on at the same time? Mine doesn't. Thx for that info. ASR is dangerous. Try Anti-Tailgate safety instead.
Yep, when the Service ASR light illuminates after detecting a fault in the system, it will energize the ground circuit to turn on the ASR OFF lamp letting you know the system had been deactivated, and is telling you to drive carefully. It's definitely an early nanny device, but does a pretty good of keeping your butt out of the fire when performing some aggressive driving maneuvers😁.
Buenos días disculpa tengo un Corvette 1995 y de repente me empezó a fallar y prendió la luz del ASR y falla demasiado, te agradecería algún consejo muchas Grasias
Hello, the ASR light indicates something in the system has failed, which will require some troubleshooting to identify which component is not working correctly. The easiest way is to use a scan tool to pull the codes from the system. That will give you a head start regarding where to look for the problem.
Great video and very informative 👍🏻.. I have a 95 C4... purchased 2 years ago in April with 87,000 miles just recently the C4 hit 100k and the original Optispark went out so I changed the Optispark, waterpump, Ignition Coil, Ignition Module, plugs and wires.. the wires were factory because each plugwire had the cylinder # on each plugwire... anyways the C4 runs Amazing better than before however on the 1st start of the day it idles high until it warms up and I have to turn the key Off and then restart and then it will Idle down to normal Idle but the ASR says it's Off and needs to be Serviced... so I changed the IAC and nothing has changed but the ASR light will turn off on its on... any ideas..?
Hey Dean, I'm glad you enjoyed it👍. As I mentioned in the video, the ASR system has very few components that make up the system. With that being said, I would lean towards you having a failing ASR unit with the symptoms you are describing. Over time, the stepper motor that controls the bell crank that the throttle cables are attached to becomes stiff and frozen up. You can check this by removing the plastic "ASR" cover and trying to rotate the bell crank by hand. If it seems overly difficult to rotate, that most likely will be your issue.
Disculpa tengo un Corvette C4 y estaba trabajando en él y de repente me empezó a marcar velocidad de más , me podrías ayudar con alguno de tus consejos por favor ,Grasias
Not really. It's more of an extra safety feature that can be manually disabled of the driver prefers, so it's not tied into the fuel or ignition circuit.
Bought a 96. CORVETTE. WHERE can I get a hard copy of factory maintenance manual? Not A CD Would love the information .I'M not a Mechanic by no means but I know a little thanks for any help. Love the channel.
You can find the hard copies on Ebay. Expect to pay between $150-$200 for the 2 book set. It's a costly upfront investment, but it's definitely worth it if you wrench on your own car.
Bought my 92 in Oct 2021 and could not figure out why that does that, I see the switch on the left dash. If I push it will it turn that off? I am going to try it. Can you drive it either way?
Hey Tony. You're correct, all you need to do after starting the car is push the button and it will disable the ASR system. The "ASR OFF" lamp will illuminate on the DIC and stay on until you press the button to turn the system back on, or restart the car which resets it back to the default position of active. You can definitely drive it either way, just remember the system is there to keep you from spinning out or ending up in the ditch. I find it useful to just keep engaged unless I want to do some drag racing type maneuver. You never even notice it's there's unless your attempting to break the tires loose.
i always leave the traction control on on my 1993 lt1, i’m a pussy 😭 also i LOVEEEE to come to a full stop, and turn it off, and do a send or whatever, that shits so hard 😭🖤🖤 i love my black on black c4 so much 🖤
i been hearing about the hold it for 5 - 6 seconds and it fully disables the traction and something else, is that true? or just made up? I just bought myself a 95 lt1 to use for drift events but before i use it to go sideways i wanted to make sure i figured everything out
Interesting, I've never heard the "hold for 5 seconds" to turn off permanently. I doubt they would build that into the system because they ASR was intended to dave your butt in the event of overly aggressive driving😁.. Personally, I would just disconnect the pigtail harness at the ASR servo if I wanted to disable it for the type of driving you're looking to do.
For sure, that little servo motor is actually pretty strong and has quite a bit of resistance. Better to just turn it off for your "spirited" low speed driving sessions and re-engage for the highway cruises.
That's why I prefer my 85 C4. No traction control, no ABS, no airbags, iron cylinder heads so no blown head gaskets. Fewer things to break when they get older. Keep it simple
There's definitely an argument to be made for that👍. The simplicity of the early C4's makes them great driving cars with very little to worry about except for locating certain parts.
@@VetteSource yes that's true. In fact I emailed you a couple weeks ago trying to find a very hard to find part. I never got a reply so I figured it's unobtainium
Hey Lee, sorry for that. I saw your email. I have an 85 core engine that I have been meaning to check and see if it's still on there. I'll get back in touch shortly.
Unless you have the best of the breed...a 96 with 3:07 gears, Z51 Performance Package and a 4L60E. The system can be turned "📴. You early C4 guys make too much of a big deal. In a 96 turned On? Works great, no issues. It plants the tires. Off? You smoke the tires down to the rims...
Yep, normally that gets taken out with a leaky water pump. Luckily, this one seems to be leaking from the forward cover plate which is keeping it away from the opti for now. I'll inspect it closer once I tear it down.
Yep, in the right light it's hard to catch. The best way to describe it is that the Aqua has more Metallic and is a but lighter like what you'd see off the Florida coastline.

Yep, you're basically turning off the nanny device that keeps you from ditch surfing your car during aggressive driving maneuvers😁.
Let me know if those check out and I can send some further troubleshooting tips your way👍.
my service ASR light has been on forever...is there a video on the cable adjustment to the asr unit...saw one long time ago?...92 vette

@@VetteSource What is the remedy for when the "service ASR" light comes on in the dash? Thank you in advance!
How can I disengage Traction Control so that emissions testing can run it on rollers to do their thing. Depressed the button on and off, won’t disengage. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Try pulling the connector at the ASR unit. That should disable the system.
Been messing around with trac control off. Last night decided to peel out a parking lot and all i saw was curb. Luckily the parking lot was made for 18wheelers so it was wide enough to just barely get control of the car. Turned it back o ln and have left it on since😂 although its from the 90s it definitely has power
Yep, these old C4's have more power than most people think. It's always fun to surprise people😁.
We can’t get our 95 C4 through emissions testing because we can’t shut off the traction control- any suggestions?
Try disconnecting the electrical connector at the ASR servo under the hood.
I have a question for ya
I've done a complete tune up on my 94 LT1
New plugs wires distributor and it still seems.like there's a miss
It sputters when you excelerate any suggestions
Have a 96 and wifey has a 95. That's the first thing we do when starting the car, turn the ASR off. I want to control the car not a computer.
Yeo. I think that's the sentiment of many owners. As long as you're not pulling speed racers moves in the rain, you should be good most of the time👍.
The first year for functionality was 1996.
gotcha thanks dude @@VetteSource
@titoqwentezproductionz3406 use the paperclip method, I believe it's #4 and #12, directly above and below each other, then just watch the digital display for any codes...
Easy peasy...
Where can I buy a set of Tire sensors for a 1996 Corvette ???
P, they have become fairly difficult to source, but I have some in-stock right now. You can reach me @VetteSource on FB or IG for more details.
Is there a vacuum line connection there?
Hi Mario, yes there are two or three vacuum lines that feed directly into the cruise servo under the hood, and another one that connects to the brake pedal to disengage the system when you hit the brakes.
I have owned a C4 for over twenty years. Every time I drive the car I disable the ASR immediately after releasing the parking
brake.
For sure, I think quite a few owners with proper driving experience turn it off. For the less experienced drivers, it can help with the "gotcha" moments on those wet rainy roads and unstable road surfaces.
same !
Awesome... Thank you and have a Blessed Memorial Weekend..!
You too, my friend👍
👍🏻
Hey VetteSource is there some kind of Lube or Spray that I can use on the ASR motor?
Disculpa tengo un Corvette C4 y estaba trabajando en él y de repente me empezó a marcar velocidad de más , me podrías ayudar con alguno de tus consejos por favor ,Grasias
Tomas, do you mean it accelerated while you had the cruise control activated?
Would this cause the car to not start sometimes?
Not really. It's more of an extra safety feature that can be manually disabled of the driver prefers, so it's not tied into the fuel or ignition circuit.
Does my 89 have the same system or no?
No, the first year it was installed on the C4 series was 1992.
@@VetteSource how do i do that exactly? If you don’t mind me asking, is there a video for it?
@@VetteSource also really appreciate you for being able to get back to me quick 💯🤝🏽
No problem👍
I haven't made a video about it, but can put something together this week👍
mine just absolutely pushes my foot back if i leave it on and stomp it
For sure, that little servo motor is actually pretty strong and has quite a bit of resistance. Better to just turn it off for your "spirited" low speed driving sessions and re-engage for the highway cruises.
The burnout button
Nice👍
@@kirkcunningham6146 if you have a 96 its probably going to be a lt4 with a manual
Leaking water pump. I hope the optispark is ok.
Yep, normally that gets taken out with a leaky water pump. Luckily, this one seems to be leaking from the forward cover plate which is keeping it away from the opti for now. I'll inspect it closer once I tear it down.
Hopefully he will swap that out while he has the water pump off once it gets water in it
It will fail
Yep, the water pump and Optispark fates are usually tied together hand in hand.
Quasar blue!!! Just like mine....
close, but this one is Aqua Blue Metallic. It replaced the Quaser Blue in 1992. The Quasar is a bit darker in the direct sunlight
@@VetteSource wow, it looks almost identical.
Yep, in the right light it's hard to catch. The best way to describe it is that the Aqua has more Metallic and is a but lighter like what you'd see off the Florida coastline.
@@VetteSource nice.
