Never encountered Hamza Yusuf before but have long been an admirer of Hedges. Really enjoyed this conversation between two highly knowlegeable, wise and compassionate scholars. This kind of content should be compulsory listening for all politicians. Though, on second thought, I doubt many of them would understand any of it.

17:02 "What is a fool but someone who doesn't know who they are or where they're going." - Hamza Yusuf

That statement really resonated with me as well. I was that person he spoke of; particularly as a child, but it manifests in different ways. This will certainly forever change my view of anger.

This is such an insightful conversation. I love the part where Chris Hedges mentions how jobs in the modern age can hinder self actualization and that leads to anger and self loathing. Especially bc your job is such a massive part of your identity. Stands in contrast to those living in poorer countries who seemingly don’t have much from a materialistic perspective but also aren’t consistently compromising internal values (via corp jobs) to live.

Thank you for providing the bridge, the language to express ourselves. Almost all in society have never been exposed to this, and the inability to express our wrath and rage is easily turned by insidious forces to the wrong ends. If you're working two or three jobs, or if you have no job and a family to keep, how do you find the time and stable calm mental state to read, discuss, develop and make any sense of the self and of events that are all pervasive in the modern world?

Feels good to hear a serious and beautiful conversation. Is it normal to find myself agreeing with Hamsa each time he says, pbuh. ?
I’m repeating it with him. !
Telling Chris to preach when he makes a good point- or gives a favourite read of mine a shout out. Making an atheist fall back to old habits. Nice tho..

I think conversations like these are important because people, especially the educated type that fancies themselves "rational," tend to dismiss the works of theologians as being just brainwashing non-sense, and that's not true at all. Many great thinkers have developed their ideas through the prism of religion. Yes, even in the catholic church!

There is an emptiness in the lives of so many in the western culture because they have lost or never gained that spiritual well which you discussed.
In that light I had often wondered how the people of Gaza endured their life of control and oppression by the occupier.

So, what you're saying is, there's a lot of wrath and it's just misdirected at the wrong things, plenty of such anger could be transmuted to righteous indignation, but ignorance and atomization prevents both understanding and organizing. Water your hatred with wisdom, tend your anger with understanding, till your wrath with learning, and know there are good reasons to do so.

Nice to hear Chris Hedges talk about something other than politics...at least at the start of this vid EDIT through the vast majority of this vid. Interesting. It seemed they missed one easy reason why people are angry - manipulation by the media
