I played this game when it first came out. Over 30 years later, present, I build a DOS 6.2 computer to replay the games. Still have the series 1-9 in their original boxes. You video is really good. Thank you.
Haha. Me and my brother always pronounced Iolo's name like "Eye-Olo", and then when Ultima 9 came out we were thought the "yolo" pronounciation sounded dumb. Love this in depth retrospective! Can't wait to see you cover the rest of the series.
Iolo is a Welsh name and there have been real Welsh people with that name like Iolo Goch, 14th Century bard, Iolo Cederig Jones a chess player, and Iolo Williams a television presenter. So I imagine Iolo Goch being the inspiration for Iolo the bard on the Ultima franchise but I hadn't found any solid proof of that.
Ever since Ultima I (1982), I pronounced Iolo's name as "Ee-O-lo" with 3 syllables and the emphasis on the second syllable. And I always pronounced Shamino as Sha-MEE-no.
When I originally played this game, I was 10/11 years old. I played on the weekends at my father's house on the Commodore 64 (with two 5 1/4 disc drives - living large back then). I didn't know/understand karma at the time, and I would repeatedly take the chests from Castle Britannia over and over for all the contents. One day, while my party was camping, Lord British appeared (as he sometimes did), told me that I have strayed off the path of the Avatar, and then dropped all my players down to level 1, which is 30 HPs. I had no idea about Karma, or my level, but I imagine it was pretty low. I remember I just picked up Katrina, who was at Level 5 (150 HPs) right off the rip, and I was so pizzed that she dropped to 30. I had no idea why at the time, and I was afraid to ask my father, who bought and also played the game. As strange as it sounds, Ultima IV and V was a strange way he taught us right/wrong. I knew I messed up, and could only come up with raiding the Royal Treasure Room over and over as the culprit. I used to YELL swear words, too. So, that's what happened to me and Karma. For reference, this was 35 years ago. I'm impressed that this game has stuck with me all throughout my life. I have the updated PC versions to play, but I just don't have time to. Thanks for this great overview on Ultima V. Is there an Ankh emoji?? 😂
Great reviews! Looking forward to when you reach Ultima VII. :) Subscribed! (And it was nice to see the Lazarus note at the end of this one-glad to hear you enjoyed it)
I got really tired of trying to find one of the words of power (no idea why...it's not like it was particularly difficult), but realized that they were just the Latin words for...the virtue opposed by the dungeon? I think that's right, but I can't remember for sure. whatever the case, it was neat to realize that you could sidestep the game if you realized what the developers were doing. I also remember how cool it seemed when the game advertised the fact that it had animated fountains that made noise. talk about technical innovations! :D
Great review. I played the game on ST in the late 80’s and decided to revive the whole story with the Dos version. Haven’t began yet but I will in the coming days. Does the current Gog version have the upgraded fan music you’re talking about or is it some patch we have to add afterwards? Otherwise I will replay it on my still working ST but playing Ultima without music is a nonsense for any musician 😅 Sorry if I missed the info. Thx and keep up the great stuff.
It doesn't have it included by default you have to apply a patch. It's very simple to do tho, you can find the patcher here: www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/category/ultima-patcher/ But replaying on your ST is always a good option too!
I never understood why they used the name of a mid-western cold jello salad's for the name of the land in those Ultimas. Didn't 3 and 6 also have the name Ambrosia?? 😂
The thing I still most remember and was impressed about was the ability to aim diagonally, instead of just straight lines. U5 was good, lots of improvements in the game. U6 went downhill, not worth playing. The next and last good ultima was 7b
@19:15 - It's a good thing if planned correctly... You see when good ol' LB levels a character, he give that character a +1 in a random stat, provided that stat isn't at 30 already. So you've been a bad boy(or gal) and you dropped to level 1. Kill a few baddies and level back to 2 with a stat boost. But OOOPS, you died again and are back to level 1. It's a good thing nobody abuses that mechanic to beef up their character and make them stronger for the dangers ahead... right? Given just enough Karma, it's pretty quickly done too. Nice review.... And Man, I want an Ultima3 remake in this engine so bad... U3 and U5 are my favorites of all the Ultima games. -- Enlightenment Dragon.
There was an NES Port of U5, though I heard it was kind of poor. Besides the NES tho it probably has to do with Ultima V taking a large technical leap over 4 and requiring a lot more power to do it justice and consoles hadn't caught up yet.
U6 is pretty similar (though I haven't played much of it) U7 is very stripped down. I'd like to review all the console ports eventually. But U6 is next once I can warmgle school and other life stuff to get to it.
Thanks for including the box contents in your review. The physical materials added greatly to the overall game experience.
I'm happy to! They are such a hug part of these games that it would be criminal not to include them in any review of the games.

Thank you for sharing and for watching the video! I built my DOS machine for the same reason!
Regarding your complaint about levelling up. LB appears more often if you have good karma.
Thank you so very much for all your time and support.
Great video and series! I only got into ultima this year and am now on Ultima 4. Looking forward to more videos!
Thank you so much! College has had me slammed but I am working to get it out as soon as it slows down a bit. Thanks for the support!
Came across your channel when I was looking up Ultimate IV, and I’m loving all these uploads now. Great work!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy as I keep working through the series!!

I also pronounced his name as "Eye-olo." I also pronounced our adventurer friend's name as "Sha-MEE-no" 😂

Thank you! I'm currently getting through VI but I am very excited for VII as it's my favorite. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoy your ultima series, hope 6 and beyond are coming soon!
Theyre on their way! Last few months of this school semester have been rough, but I'm working on them when I can.
Great indepth review.
Thank you!!

Dragon Quest 1: Killing mass numbers of slimes to progress through the game, yeeesh!
Ultima 5: "Hold my beer..."
It is the only way XD

Indeed ! But always fear that a floppy crashes.
Anyway, many thanks for the info !
@@MSDOSProjectThat's awesome, I never knew about the patch. So I've never heard the music! I'm excited 😊
Was the song that starts at 38:04 part of the Ultima 5 midi patch or did you get it from somewhere else? Where?
It's from Ultima 7, the Ambrosia theme according to the files I have. But of course now I can't find it on UA-cam
@@MSDOSProject I am going to check the OST for Ultima 7 and see if I can find it. Thank you for replying.

Oh my goodness yes that was amazing and I was so happy going to 5 that I could finally do that, as the enemies were able to do so previously
And U5 isn't so heavy in combat

I had heard about that, it's fun to abuse those oversights lol.
Thanks for the kind words!!
Nice retrospective! Do you know why U5 wasn't ported to consoles when 3-4 and 6-7 were?
There was an NES Port of U5, though I heard it was kind of poor. Besides the NES tho it probably has to do with Ultima V taking a large technical leap over 4 and requiring a lot more power to do it justice and consoles hadn't caught up yet.
@@MSDOSProject Oh right, I mistook that one for a reimagining of U6. The SNES ports of later games also seem a bit simplified.
U6 is pretty similar (though I haven't played much of it) U7 is very stripped down. I'd like to review all the console ports eventually. But U6 is next once I can warmgle school and other life stuff to get to it.
@@MSDOSProject Having explored Ultima 5 myself, I think it would have been better remade for SNES.
NES U5 looks HORRIBLE.....!!! 🤮
Lol "screw you!"
Good review, but there are parts that seem to be taken wholesale from spoony’s old review. Certain phrasing and examples.
Fair enough. I haven't watched his reviews in years purposefully to try to get away from that. Thanks for the feedback.
