Of the many cars that i now own, my 1994 E320 cabriolet is one of my favorite. I never tire of its classic good looks and the quality of this W124 is one of the best. Great handling, acceleration, and awesome comfort.

+1. .. A informative primer touching on the W124 cabriolet/coupe chassis enhancements. .. Gotta luv the 3 added "enertia-weight-dampeners" strategically positioned. .. Fast forward and its year 2018. .. The Dodge/Ram 1/2 to 1 ton pickup models have - (not since 1999) - been throughly redesigned for MY2018. .. The ladder frame/chassis architecture benefits from the comprehensive redesign utilizing high strenth steel, light weight aluminium and (wait-for-it) enertia-weight-dampers by another name. .. Small world.

Now that these vehicles are coming up on 30 years old, no parts can be found for them... I'm about to completely redo the hydraulics... That's no problem as top hydraulics has the know how... But limit switches... Seat belts... trigger switches... And a wiring system with old and brittle insulation has me concerned...
Any introduction to those already doing this would be appreciated... For instance... The seat belts are completely flaccid... No spring tension at all. They are not to be found anywhere so far, so rebuilding them is the plan somehow... Anyone doing that already?

A whole lot of additional engineering complications....just for the sake of getting that open-top motoring experience ?
I've always been sceptical of the practicality of soft-top cars in so far as security issues (easier to break into ?) as well as how well the resistance to water leakage from the soft roof with repeated open & close of the top ??!
Despite how good any car maker can ever be i believe this open soft-top concept of automobile design is never going to be on par with rigid shell bodywork on durability, rigidity, security. Perhaps a better compromise would be some multi piece metal foldable hard top...provided they can create enough space within the car to store the roof when not in use ?
