Maybe try using up to 3 pony for one bun depending on how full the braids of pony are and then use hair pins to hold the braids together with the bun after installing. Another option, maybe try using a ponytail mesh to make the ponytail instead of that elastic band. I have a video showing how to use the mesh.

Nice! I’ve done this before but when the child moves a lot, the braids split and exposes the bun inside. How can this be avoided? Any ideas?

I took some black sewing thread and so down the very top so it still has some swing but stays over it
