Wildlife & Landscape photography | Micro Four Thirds at Bempton Cliffs - How did we get along?

- Опубліковано 16 вер 2024
- My wife and I recently went on a camping trip to Yorkshire with the aim of doing some Wildlife and Seabird photography at RSPB Bempton Cliffs.
This was our first ever visit to Bempton and my first time photographing seabirds and to date it is probably my best ever wildlife experience!
As I was straight off of a nightshift and accompanied by my wife and little Terrier Ted, I felt it wasn't the ideal situation to be making my usual behind the scenes style video, so I made a sort of "after action review" style one instead, going over what we did and what I learned from the trip.
If you enjoyed the video the best thing you can do to support me and the channel is to leave a like and comment and I will absolutely get back to you with any questions you may have. If you like any of my images you can also purchase them securely via my website below. Thanks for watching!

The cliffs look so majestic 2:36
Lovely Video. Thanks!
Thank you!
Hey, what a fantastic video. Keep up the great work! I look forward to your next video.
Thanks! Quite a few since this one :)
Great video. Stunning images. Also loved your overview of your equipment and it's strengths and weaknesses. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks John! I have made a new gear purchase that so far seems to have solved my issues ;)
Great video and the photos was very good...👍
Nice one. Thanks :)
Joe, see you got the G9. Hey waiting on your next video !
Sshhh dont tell anyone yet haha. This is my busy time of year but hopefully will have some more videos out as soon as I can :)
What a Great place to shoot!!! I would love to go there and film a video with the puffins😍😍😍
Yes it is really really awesome and breathtaking. One of my favourite places I have visited here in the UK! I need to explore more of my country!
I would go for the G9. It’s a great camera. Decent video from it as well. The weather resistance is very useful.
I am now indeed an owner of the G9 😁😁😁
Sadly I just haven't had the time to make videos as this is always a busy time of year for me amongst other problems :(
Joe Marano I guess it will come in handy for the deer rutting. Look forward to seeing some results on your UA-cam channel. I will go look at your Instagram too.
@@anthonyjones728 Let's hope I can find the time! I used it on a recent trip to Berlin and couldn't have asked for more from it :)
Great video Joe, you have definitely made me add RSPB Bempton cliffs to my places to vist list haha
It made me get an RSPB membership so I think I need to tick them all off the list! :)
Awesome vlog Joe! Stunning scenery and animals!
You should do a UK trip one day. Call it return to the motherland lol
@@JoeMaranophotography haha.. I would love to!!
Great video! Beautiful job by you!
Thanks! Much appreciated! :)
Yes Joe. Always enjoy your view of things. You are right about the EM1 Mkii and it has just got even better with focus groups with a 2 week old 3.1 update. I went to an Oly Expert day on the hottest day of the year and had the expertise benefits of the rep to myself for a couple of hours. Together we re-set a lot of things on the camera that were new to Version 3.0 and 3.1 Removed an errant setting that was lousing up some stuff too. These cameras are a minefield of features. Used to love camping but sold the camper van. Too stiff these days. Still have the awning though in case.
Many thanks for the nice comment :) The only thing putting me off of Olympus is the good old fear of the unknown but mainly losing dual IS on the 100-400. Who knows maybe one day manufacturers will send me stuff and I can make "why I switched to Sony then Canon then Nikon then Olympus videos" 😂😂😂
Its funny you mention the camper van because I am actually planning on selling my beloved car in order to be able to get one! It would be amazing for my family to see more of the UK and it would benefit my photography and also the channel greatly I think! Let me know what sort of videos you would like to see going forwards as I don't get a lot of feedback on here so my main effort is instagram really at the minute :)
@@JoeMaranophotography Hi, I never had dual IS but I understand that the Em1 mkii has improved an already good body IS which makes up for it. It was watching it in use on a video demo that convinced me. Borrow one I suppose? I use the 100-400 and usually it is fine (as far as I know) Well I have no family at home any more and it was costing a lot having 2 vehicles. It is a great help if it rains though. A high top is a must though once you know. It is such a relief having the beds upstairs and being able to stand up. Honest! What was the biggest problem you solved might be a good topic?
@@nitmoi3548 From what I hear its best to use the lens IS which gives 3 stops but of course the G9 will give 6.5 which is quite a difference. Still undecided. Might see what the prices are like to make the decision. Yeah I have been looking at an awful lot but they are so expensive! My current favourite is an ex welfare transit but I guess we will see.
Hmmm. Interesting. Im wondering what that is as I type haha
Amazing video brother! Would love to see how you edited your landscapes and wildlife images.
Beautiful footage, really great shots
Thanks! Maybe next time I won't colour grade as it takes forever lol
Great video Joe - you've certainly upped the quality for this one! I think you got some great puffin shots despite not being able to get super-close (let's be honest it's almost cheating at that point!) It's a shame about the problematic AF, you should really consider something with phase detect it's soooo much better than contrast detect.
Thanks! Glad it went noticed! Yes I thought it would be the ideal time what with the location and such :)
Completely agree. Whilst there are some AMAZING shots of Puffins out there its basically free photography almost with minimal effort. These guys definately *were* (a bit too much) of a challenge but to be honest I am used to it! 🤣
With the AF I have been fine up until now as I never really did much bird photography but this is where the G80 at least really falls short. Like I say my father in laws G9 is sooo much better for that sort of thing and has all the usual features I want from a camera on top so thats probably my choice going fowards but yes phase detect for now is much better. Panasonic are very stubborn as long term they believe contrast will be the best solution although that remains to be seen! An Olympus EM1X looks pretty compelling but thats just silly money!
@@JoeMaranophotography Yeah the EM1X is way too pricey for the small MFT sensor imo. I was going to suggest a Nikon D7500 or D500 with the 200-500, but I know you like MFT.
@@RobBlight I *do* like MFT for many reasons and I guess a lot of it is down to value for money for the amount of features you get. I also don't tend to do a great deal of low light or shallow depth of field photography either.
A good shout on the D500 though. I did look into one recently but decided other than the better autofocus for birds in flight I wouldn't be gaining much aside from bigger heavier lenses and then feeling like i was going backwards with it being DSLR.
The big players are slowly eroding away some of the MFT advantages (such as being mirrorless, video features etc) I think if Nikon made a mirrorless D500 style camera then that may gain my interest but until then I think I will be MFT through and through.
The new Lumix full frame cameras got a bit of interest from me and then I saw their price! They aren't really wildlife cameras either and the video features are arguably worse than the aging but still relevant GH5.
That EM1X although pricey is one heck of a camera though and if I could afford one I think I would! Handheld shooting with 7.5 stops of stabilisation, the crazy burst speeds and the high res mode are really neat!
cracking video joe!
Hey thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it! Took me forever to edit haha!
Nice keep up the good work.
Thanks bud! Kids holidays now so lots of time off to.....
Look after my son lol
Joe Marano portrait training? Lol
@@owenrees1 Hahaha well I might have to drag him around a few reserves as he needs to spend less time on the Playstation. That said we have just had two days of winter weather so lets see shall we lol
Joe Marano yes get out with him. I’m sure he would love it. And yes it’s better than computer. 👍
@@owenrees1 Homestly his behaviour without having time.on it is vastly improved!
I was at Bempton a few weeks before you, on the 12th of July (see ua-cam.com/video/sHQJQXYYqZ4/v-deo.html ), and agree with you that it is an excellent place to visit. I haven't done much wildlife photography, but, this visit certainly whetted my appetite. Ian :-)
Ohh will have to check that out. Thanks :)
On 9:28 it looks almost like a picture that I took at the jurassic coast
Have to share the link with us bud? :)
@@JoeMaranophotography I still need to edit everything to make a UA-cam video
I think someone has hacked in to your website as the link above is being blocked by my Norton software as dangerous
My website doesn't exist anymore sorry. I couldn't justify what it cost me.
@@JoeMaranophotography Yes I know what you mean not only is it free but you get seen a lot more on social media. I have got the GX80 with a 14-45mm and 45-200mm lens. Not a bad camera but not up to the standard of Canon or Nikon.
@@tomcurtis6953 I had a GX80 and whilst amazing for how small and light it was, the rubbish EVF, lack of flip screen and poor AF sealed its doom for me lol
@@JoeMaranophotography May I ask what camera you are using now?
@@tomcurtis6953 Until December last year it was Panasonic Lumix G80 and G9 but now just G9.
